What is an Atlas?

An ATLAS is a bound volume of charts, plates, or tables illustrating any subject.*

Usually associated with a bound collection of maps.

What is a Gazetteer?

A GAZETTEER is “a dictionary or encyclopedia listing alphabetically the names of places, political divisions, and physical features of the earth and giving some information about each.”*

Indexes and Atlases can also serve as gazetteers.**

A gazetteer contains three types of information about places: name, type of feature, and location.**
