    tlantis, w e be-lieve, hasbeenin a

manner ofspeakingr ising for sometime, but this year w e expectit to do so at a much fasterclip . Since its inception i n No-vember of 1994, AtlantisRisingthe magazinehasbeen published four times ayear. This year w e intendto increase that to six.Read into that what youwill, but the plain truthis, we are accelerati ngour production process and thatis good new s for all of our loyal readers, i fnot for the planet.

To those who never qui te figured out how our previous scheduleworked and called regularly to wonder about the whereabouts of theirlatest i ssue, this should be welcome news indeed. I t certainly means moremeaty, cutting-edge reporting on the most interesting stories of our times,It means more pictures, more interviews and book reviews and, of course, more truth about ancient mysteries, alternative science, unexplained anom-alies and much, much more. Were excited and w e hope you are too, butdont forget that your subscrip tion w ill run out a litt le sooner now.Anyway, we will not forget to remind you.

Producing Atlant is Risingat a faster c lip has alw ays been our intention, but it has taken a few years to get things suff iciently aligned to make it pos-sible. This does not mean, how ever, that bi -monthl y publ ication is our ul ti -mate goal. We eagerly look forward to the day when we will be operating

on a monthly, or even weekly basis. Hopefully, we will also be able to in-crease our page count and improve the publ ication in many other w ays. Allof these things w il l be possible when the magazine is read by enoughpeople. Gett ing from here to there is a step-by-step process which, even atthis faster pace, takes time to unfold. Toward that end we hope to maintainthe loyal support of readers like you, and, to hope also that you will re-double your efforts to spread the word to those among your friends whohave not yet discovered us. Thus, we believe, the day of that future per-fected Atlant is Rising, w hich w e all envision, w ill be hastened.

Whatever the future may hold, you need w ait no longer for the extraor-dinary contents of th is very issue, and i f you see the current offering as aharbinger of th ings to come you w ill not be much mistaken. In the fol-lowing pages, you will not only find interviews with John Mack and RussellTarg, you will read the latest from Zecharia Sitchin and Christopher Dunn,

you will examine the evidence for advanced metalurgy in the prehistoricpast and you w il l investigate the case for atomic holocaust at the end of thelast ice age and much more. All of which is but the tip of the proverbial i ce-bergor should we say, the fi rst emergence above the ocean of dry landfrom a drowned continent?

At any rate, w e trust you get our drif t.

Geom etri c Face OffThe following comments regarding

the article The Human Face Of SacredGeometry, by Charles R. Henry, are notintended to dissuade Atlantis Risingfrom publishing new research effortsin the future; but while the goal of of-fering the readers insight through the

presentation of new research is laud-able. The results, in this case, arepainful.

First, the evidence. (Im assumingthese photographs represent the bestevidence of his achievements.) Figure3 does look vaguely anthropomorphic:it looks like a Muppet, the one of thegrumpy old man. All I can make out onFigure 2 is possibly a pair of humanlips. Figure 4which looks like a de-sign by the arti st, H.R. Giegerhas afew vague human faces, which bringsup a point: the human body utilizes bi-lateral symmetry in its design; anyother thing exhibiting bilateral sym-metry, from inkblots to cloud patterns, will of necessity produce human-likeforms from time to time. Figure 6, aconfluence of all the objects being re-flected can be taken, at a point, as aface; however, notice that all the re-flected elements that comprise it areseparate symmetrical objects, and thatto isolate it as a face your mind has toemploy its pattern recognition soft-ware, which immediately excludescontiguous imagery that doesnt looklike a face, and, using a bilateral seamas the organizing point, groups severalindependent images into a whole. This

is becuase the mind acts as a filter andan organizer of visual data; i t takes pat-terns and compares them against p revi-ously known images and looks for amatch; thus, several independent ob-jects, seen from a distance, become aface.

The natural tendency of the mind t operform in this fashion has been recog-nized for generations and exploited bynumerous artists. It was used to partic-ularly good effect by Salvatdore Dali. The matches between the photographsand human faces, such as they are, are

not evidence of some heretofore un-known design process in nature, but ofthe psychological manipulations of thehuman mind in its never-ending at-tempt to derive meaning and recogni-tion out of the background jumble ofinformation we are constantly exposed

to. To wit: the photos are interestingfrom an artistic standpoint, particularlyfigure 4. but demonstrate nothingabout sacred geometry.

A word about the authors attemptto cloak his process in the wisdom ofthe ancients, i.e., his arbitrary linkageof his process to the Kabbalah. Here, his attempted rationalization rapidlyeclipses logic. Since the Kabbalah is in-volved with the idea of creation andemploys spheres, and the authorsmethods involve creation (of humanfacesnot even w hole heads) and usesspheres, then, ipso facto, enough of aconnection exists to link the two. That

done, he then tw ists the diagram of theTree Of Life into two 3D pyramidal sec-ti ons of five spheres eacheffect ivelyobscuring the fact that on the TOL theten spheres are arranged according to aseries of three upper triads and MaI-kuth (material world/earth) at thebottom. Thats a lot of effort to go to,but, hey, if you re developing a keyholetheory, anything goes, even renderingapart and rearranging the Tree Of Life.

endlessly manipulating a series ofspheres until they saw them make a re-flection they liked on a two dimen-sional surface, then said, Hey, letsblow that 2D image we just made fromreflections of 3D spheres on 2D sur-faces back into the third dimension,

then design a body to go with it andwere in business!I am being flippant, of course, but

this is the essence of what were askedto consider. Nature, from a designstandpoint, does use particular mathe-matical ratios associated wit h sacredgeometry (the phi ratio and its har-monics, for example) to create threedimensional forms. What sense wouldit makea poor ut ili zation of energy, in-deedto start w ith a 3D template (t hespheres), reflect them on a 2D surface(the reflecting surface the author pho-tographs) and then use that 2D imageas a basis for going back into the third

dimension to create form. None. Crea-tion is this manner has more affinitywith bureaucratic ineptitude and de-sign by committee than with the con-cise mathematical logic and beautifulgeometric interplay so creatively em-ployed by Nature.

My son came to me one night while I wasworking on the computer and asked, Poppa, canyou find something about speed reading on theInternet for me? Id like to learn it. Sure I re-plied, and within a few seconds I had a page ofspeed reading courses that were offered. One par-ticular one caught my eye. It read, 25,000 wordsper minute minimum! I chose that one andclicked on it and up popped a presentation by acompany named Subliminal Dynamics and BrainManagement. I read through their web page atwww.subdyn.com and discovered that theydont actually teach speed-reading. They teachMental Photography.

Photographic MemoryI became very excited because they seem to

offer a lost piece of my life experience that Ithought that I would be able to have from thetime that I was a child.

When I was a youngster my father was anewspaper editor. At night he would sit down andliterally flip through the pages of a book andsometimes hand the book to me and say, HereSon, read me a sentence from anywhere in thebook. I thought that it was some kind of trick, buthe could do it even if I went around the cornerinto the hallway. Dad explained to me that he hada photographic memory.

My Mother recently told me, Dad would bringa stack of books to bed each night and read themall in just a few minutes. She asked, Thornton, what are you doing? He stopped flipping thepages, looked at her and said, Reading. Noone can read that fast. she replied. Its impos-sible! He assured her that he could read that fastand offered her the stack of books that he had just

devoured and asked her to choose a book and hewould tell her about it. I thought Dad would al-ways be there for me and never asked him toteach me how this was done. I definitely intendedto though. My father died when I was twentyyears old. I have lamented my not having gottenan understanding of his photographic memory.

So when I read the information on SubliminalDynamics and their course on Mental Photog-raphy I shouted, Eureka! This is somethingthat I want to make sure that all of my childrenhave.

A NEW way to Learn How to LearnRichard Welch, CEO and Founder says that

everyone is born with the ability to learn byMental Photography and in fact everyone usesit to learn everything - until we are about five

years old. That is when we enter the publicschool system and learn the Rote-MemorySystem of reading. I believe that is when thebrakes are put on our learning process and wemove from potential genius into slow thinkersthat store most educational matter into our short-term memory rather than our long-termmemory. Learning by Mental Photographyplaces matter into our long-term memory. Thatswhy my father could remember every word in thedictionary without memorizing the words. Hesimply set them to memory by Mentally Photo-graphing them a page at a time. Excitedly, I e-mailed Subliminal Dynamics and Brain Manage-ment and told them I wanted to take my whole

family to America to learn this wonderful abilitythat my father had.

Brain Management Powerful!Subliminal Dynamics and Brain Manage-

ment Seminar is truly a Whole Life Enhance-

ment Course, and it is powerful! Mental Photog-raphy is used for much more than assimilatinginformation. It is the life force of the course.Mental Photography is the Key for making thisall work. As a Brain Management student, youexperience Mental Photography, take tests, etc, then they teach you ways in which to recallthat information when you need it. It is a veryspecific method of directing information into thelong-term memory.

Mental Photography bypasses Dyslexia!During the class, adults and children with dys-

lexia quickly overcame that problem, and afterthe seminar function with excellence and confi-dence in education and writing, and any otherchallenge.

My father stacked degrees during his lifetime. He sort of collected them. After all, all he had todo was photograph the books into his long-termmemory and take the exams. Now I will be ableto learn what was natural to me as a child, andtake that ability with me to easily further my edu-cation. Why not!? Others are doing it!

Kids that relearn this ability are able to grad-uate from school years ahead of the other kids -with very high grades. They begin taking collegecourses as youngsters. Learning becomes first na-ture, as there is an end to the tedium of memor-izing and cramming material into the short-termmemory only to loose it within a few days orweeks.

There are several languages that I want for mychildren and myself to know. By Mentally Photo-graphing the cross language dictionaries of anydesired language into the long-term memory, it is

possible to know the whole vocabulary of a lan-guage in as much time as it takes to flip the pagesof the book. Then by Mentally Photographing astudy book for that language, the only thingyoure short, is knowing the sound of the lan-guage. For that you could listen to tapes or speakwith someone who speaks that particular lan-guage.

Limitless BrainpowerThe possibilities are limitless with this kind of

brainpower. For years scientists have told us thatwe use less than ten percent of our brains ca-pacity. Now I have found the way back into theother ninety percent and intend to see that mywife and children learn it and move through lifewith the confidence that will be theirs with thiscommand of powerful intelligence that is natu-

rally available for all of our children. This rein-forces my personal long held understanding thatall of mankind is born genius and then robbed ofit by being taught an unnatural method oflearning reading. Mental Photography putsreal meaning to the phrase, Be all that you canbe!

Empower Yourself!Successful Brain Management and Mental

Photography Seminars have been taughtthroughout the world and offer FREE RE-FRESHERS FOR LIFE. They are committed tothe success of their students.

a pyramid in Figure 1. Three radii ofthe small ci rcle equals one radius of thelarge circle. A line that crosses a circlethrough the center of that circle runsthrough the diameter at two places at a

RIGHT ANGLE to that diameter. It ap-pears that the two intersections of thetwo small diameters define both thebase line and the apex of a certainpyramid, a certain triangle. Andwith the apex being at a point inwhich two sides ofthat pyramid crossesthe diameter of t hetwo small circles re-spectfully at RIGHTANGLES. And for afour-sided pyramid, this would also betrue for the other twosides. In the drawing

of a tri angle, thebase line is drawnhorizonally t hroughthe bott om int ersec-tion of two circles ofequal diameters. Inthe drawing of thetwo sides of the tri-angle, the apex isthe top intersection oftw o circles whichcontinue on throughthe center respectfullyof the two circles. How do I show ifthis apex is at the point of the facesof the pyramid being at RIGHT AN-

GLES respectfully to the two diametersof the two circles? They may not be atRIGHT ANGLES? Using t he Star ofDavid of two equilateral triangles of180 degrees each, being equal to 360degrees of a circle, i s the easy way toprove all of our t rigonometry. The Starof David also in its past had a crystalconnotation.

One of myown theories is that perhaps in thevastness of space there w ere severalBig Bangs and if this is true, there maybe many various universes. Where wethink our own universe ends at theedge of the quasars, then perhaps wetravel further and find nothingness. Then as we continue on with ourjourney we discover another line ofquasars and a new universe to explore.

    EARLY RAYS

n November whi lemost of the media was

apparently looking theother w ay, another blowwas struck against the or-thodox paradigm for thedawn of civilization onEarth, with momentousimpl ications concerningquestions of our true ori -gins.

At the annual confer-ence of the Geological So-ciety of America in Reno,Nevada, before a packed

audience of nearly 500professional geologists,Boston University pro-fessor Dr. Robert Schochdelivered in about 15 minutes a papercoauthored with John Anthony Westentitled Further Evidence Supportinga Pre-2500 B.C. Date for the GreatSphinx of Giza, Egypt. Except for t woirate Egytologists who tried to shoutdown the proceedings, the audienceseemed favorably disposed to the ideaspresented.

The paper represented Schoch andWest s response to challenges from t heEgyptological establishment to sensa-

tional claims by the pair at the 1991GSA event that w ater-weathered fea-tures of the Sphinx proved it w as sub-stantially older than allowed by or-thodox history. Critics had argued that,no matter what the geological evi-dence might show, there was no ar-chaeological context to support theWest/Schoch thesis.

At Reno-Schoch made several pointsincluding recitation of recently com-pleted studies which support his workand the listing of corroborating factsfrom a number of Egyptian sites. Asstated in the conference abstract:These include other monuments at

Giza and elsewhere exhibiting water-weatheri ng features preserved beneathor within Old Kingdom (ca. 2575-2150B.C.) repair campaigns and structures(for example, Tomb of Queen Khent-kaus at Giza; a weathered chamber pro-tected within the Red [North] Pyramidat Dahshur). Deeply weathered shafttombs adjacent to or near much lessweathered Third Dynasty (ca. 2600B.C.) shafts at Saqqara provide furtherpossible evidence for previously unsus-pected large-scale pre-Third Dynasty

cultural p rojects in Egypt. The primary argument of the noisy

detractors can be paraphrased to the ef-fect that thousands of Egyptologistshave studied the Sphinx for hundredsof years and it cant possibly be olderthan the traditional date. (Incidentallythough, in point of fact, only a handfulof people, including Schoch and West, have actually studied the Sphinxclosely.) Other points made by thehecklers were of comparable merit.

Almost no media attended the en-suing press conference, a cir cumstancewhich may have owed more to distrac-tions posed by events in the wake ofthe U.S. presidential election than to alack of interest in the subject. If so, Itcertainly was not the first time that dis-coveries of great import ance have beenovershadowed by events which ulti-mately proved to be of less conse-quence.

about the Fox networks propensity forquestionable reality fare such asWho Wants to Marry a Multi-Millionaire? and The Worlds ScariestPolice Shoot outs. When pressed on de-ception in it s mummy show Fox placedthe responsibility on Hawasss shoul-ders, The Government of the Republicof Egypt maintained control over the ar-chaeological digs and Dr. Hawass andhis team were responsible for the exca-vation and preparation of all finds fea-

tured on the special. The negative publicity cannot bewelcome, especially at a time whenHawasss critics have questioned hisrole in blocking a previously agreedground-penetrating radar survey of theGiza plain (set for May, 2000) after con-firming to the press that it was indeedhappening. Not surprisingly, such inci-dents have reminded some of otherpromised explorations which haveassome put itmysteriously failed to ma-terialize, such as his publicly stated in-tention to investigate the so-called Gan-tenbrink door in the Great Pyramidaround the Spr ing Equinox of 2000

(A.R.E. summer conference 1999). Andsuch incidents, it has been suggested, cannot help but cast doubt on otherpublic pronouncements such as his in-sistence in 1999, despite considerableevidence to the contrary, that no secrettunneling was going on in the GreatPyramid. In a climate rife with suspi-cion, critics speculate, the recovery ofhis lost credibility could pose a formida-able challenge to Hawass.

Martian Pictures ShowAncient Lake Bed Strata

A ncient Martian real estate may have been well stockedwith lake front property. The evidence is increasingthat not only did the Red planet have waterand not all t hatlong ago (geologically speaking)but it may very well oncehave been a veritable land of lakes. Such a land could pos-sibly have supported life which might have evolved to levelsonce considered impossible.

Recent photos from the Mars Global Surveyor reveallayers of Earth-like sedimentary rock not unlike that found inthe Grand Canyon. Scientists think such rocks might harborfossils of ancient Martian life. Reported in the Jour na l Sci-ence, the new findings do much to make the case that Marsmay have once been warm, wet and hospitable to life.

A mission to Mars set for this spring could turn up topo-graphical data and lateral photos to strengthen the case, while a mission planned for 2005 is being planned with thenew information w ell in mind.

o need to laugh at those comic strip characters carryingsigns proclaiming t he end of the wor ld, I am convinced

they are absolutely correct. The end of the world is indeedcoming. What I cannot tell you is when. I am also not surewhat will cause the end, but be assured it is comingprobably not in your li fetime, but, t hen again, dont be too sure.

Scient if ic findings are being re-ported in increasing numbers toshow that the world is much older

than we thought. Carbon dating,DNA testing and other meansare used to positively determinethe age of fossil finds. Yes-terdays theories go out thew indow , and w hat w as scien-tif ic proof is replaced bynewer methods and theo-ries.

It reminds me of theapocryphal story about theyoung boy visiting an anthro-pology museum when hesees a dinosaur model. Heasks the docent how old the di-

nosaur was and t he docent re-plies, One hundred million andten years old. The li tt le boy looksamazed and asks how she can beso definite about the extra ten years. The docent explainsthat when she started giving lectures, they told her the di-nosaur was one hundred million years old...and that wasten years ago!

I do believe that many of our scient ists use the same logicas the docent. Twice in the past year, NASA has predictedcatastrophic collisions between the earth and an asteroid. Inboth cases, astronomers discovered new information within24 hours that proved NASA incorrect and forced them to re-vise their estimates. Relax! The September 16, 2030 NASAprediction has now been revised to the year 2071. And thefirst incident has been called off altogether. Of course, if you

read the daily papers, you know there have been a numberof near misses in 2000. Asteroids have escaped the notice ofastronomers telescopes and come from unknown areas inthe sky.

Geologists studying meteorites found on Antarctica andthe Libyan desert have discovered evidence of a monstrouscataclysm nearly 3.9 billion years ago when both the moonand the earth were bombarded from outer space with aforce so powerful that it turned the earth hot, changed theatmosphere with vaporized silica rocks and boiled away thesurface of the oceans. The scientists say that at least 17,000asteroids or comet heads, perhaps as large as 600 miles in di-

ameter, came in one brief spasm. Barbara Cohen of the Uni-versity of Tennessee says that since the moon also got bom-barded, pieces came to earth. This strongly effected the fu-ture of life on our planet and could have destroyed the veryearliest life that existed, or it brought to our planet the firstorganic molecules that served as the beginnings of l ife here.

I am sure that our docent in the museum would beastounded by the 3.9-million-year figure and add another tenyears. She would probably be confounded by the scientificfinding that this rock storm destroyed all life...or set thestage for lif e.

At an American Geophysical Union symposium in SanFrancisco at the end of 2000, scientists discussed the WalterAlvarez (University of California at Berkeley) theory that thedinosaurs became extinct from a nuclear winter of cold anddarkness that lasted for thousands of years, caused by the im-pact of an asteroid or comet. These scientists said they arenow confident that the Yucatan, Mexico crater was morethan 125 miles wide and spread glassy matter on the ocean

bot tom 1000 miles east.Geophysicist Gail

Christeson (Universityof Texas at Austin) usedseismic echoes from air

gun shots wi thin the craterand determined that the ext rater-

restrial impact dug more than20 miles down to the very

bottom of t he earth s crust. The impact created a huge

fire storm sending up a tow-ering plume of molten

rock, dust, ash and killinggases which made the

earth almost uninhabit-able for 70 percent of

plant and animal life. Thisis not the same event

noted above. This one isdated at 65 million

    years agoquit e recenttimes, comparatively.

A different cata-clysm occurred be-tw een the two, 1.8billion years ago atSudbury, Ontario. This one was 100

miles wide, according to Virgil Sharpt on of the Universityof Alaska. I am sure that as time goes on and scienti fic tools

improve, we will find any number of collisions that de-stroyed lif e as we know it.

But what i s life as we know it? Until recently, we egoistsdecided that intelligence is a recent development. Not so, ac-cording to Doug Broadfield at the Mount Sinai School ofMedicine in New York. They analyzed the nearly completecranium of a female who lived 400,000 years ago (give ortake ten years). She had the capacity of speech, language and

complex thought. Broadfield says this lady is from homoerectus, predecessor to homo sapiens, and may be the longsought missing link between the two.

We humans also believe that w e are the only species w ithhigher intelligence. Give some thought to this story fromSaudi Arabia where there are 350,000 baboons in residence.A driver on the road between Mecca and Taif ran down a ba-boon and kept going. Not exactly a hit and run in our terms;yet, as reported by the Los Angeles Times last November,

When the Gods Came DownThe author ofGods of the New Millennium has found a new explanation for many ancientmysteries. THE DAILY GRAIL recently interviewed writer Alan Alford. Here are some ex-cerpts (you can read the entire interview on-line):

DG :Co uld you p rovide an ove rview , for those rea de rs not fa milia r withyou or your work, on how you c am e to be a professiona l author on alter-native history?

A A : Certainly. At around the age of 20, I read one of Erich Von Danikensbooks in which he suggested that the gods who came down from Heavento Earth in ancient mythology were astronauts from another planet. Beingopen-minded and having no particular religious convictions, I was fascinatedby this possibility especially bec ause the gods were often depicted inhuman-like form.

I was thus inspired to take an interest in history and religionsubjec tswhich had bored me to death at schooland I began to realize that therewere numerous anomalies in the

human past which had been over-looked by modern scholars; for ex-ample, the origins of Homo sapiens, the origin of ancient civilisations andtheir amazing scientific knowledge;and above all, the legends of the

gods who came down to Earth, created mankind and granted it thegifts of c ivilization. Von Danikenstheory seemed to supply a unique ex-planation for all of these anomalies.

Later, in 1989, I went to a confer-ence in America and discovered theworks of an American writer ZechariaSitchin. Sitchin had taken the ancientastronaut theory further than Von Da-niken and his thesiswritten in a morescholarly styletotally captivatedme. During the next few years, I be-came well acquainted with theSitchin material and began to seehow his thesis might be updated and

improved in certain aspects. In addition I felt that Sitchins work had been un-fairly overlooked in the alternative history boom which had hit the UK in theearly 1990s and I was motivated to try and redress the balance and bringSitchins work to the attention of the UK public (the UK public had beenstarved of ancient astronaut books since the early 1980s).

In 1995, I began working in my spare time on a book entitled God s of theNew Millennium: Sc ientific Proof o f Flesh a nd Blood Gods, which I self-published in 1996 (I had taken the view that the subject matter was far toosensitive for a mainstream publisher). But then, to my great surprise, I was ap-proac hed by Hodder & Stoughton Publishers, who made me an offer for thesales rights to Gods, along with an advance which would cover the researchand writing of two further books. It was at this point that I decided to turn my

back permanently on the charteredaccountancy profession and be-come a full-time researcher andwriter.

The rest, as they say, is historyorshould that be alternative history?!In 1998 Hodders published my sequel, specifically on ancient Egypt, entitledThe Phoen ix Solution : Sec rets of a Lost

Civilisation. It was in this book that I began to realize that the theory of thegods advanced in my first book was seriously flawed.

During the last two years, further research has convinced me that thegods who came down from Heaven to Earth were definitely not anc ient as-tronauts but meteorite-and-flood gods from an exploded planet (whetherreal or mythica l). The results of this study are written up in my new book, pub-lished April 2000, entitled When The G od s Ca me Down: The C at astrop hicRoo ts of Religion Revea led.

TDG : I have to say I enjoyed the b oo k and I think in the future it will beseen to have m ad e a c ontribution to a dva ncing our knowled ge o f ourselves. There is no d oub t tha t you a re also q uite original in your resea rch. In loo king atthe funda me ntal app roa c h of WTGCD you ha ve c lea rly sep arate d sc ienc efrom mytholog y. Since , pe rhaps, Ham lets Mill to your ow n last w ork ThePhoenix Solution , the ap proac h has been to ma rry sc ience a nd m ythologytog ether to d em onstrate how ad vanc ed anc ient c ivilisations were. InWTGCD you see this as inapp ropria te. What value d o you see in taking the

sc ienc e out o f tac kling the mythology o f the a ncients?

A A : The originality of my work began with The Phoen ix Solution in which Isuggested that the anc ient Egyptian religion was an exploded planet cult, with the Sun being only a visible symbol for the invisible (by definition) ex-ploded planet. This wasboth literally and metaphoricallya ground-breaking development.

The problem with The Phoen ix Solut ionwas that I followed the time-honored custom of mixing up mythology with science. Thus I fell into the trapof suggesting that if the ancient Egyptians had believed in exploded planets, then planets must have exploded and the ancients must have had a fan-tastic scientific capabilityequivalent to 20th-century technologyin orderto derive this conclusion (incidentally I never suggested that the ancients hadactually witnessed a planetary explosion).

This caused a problem because my revolutionarydecoding of the ancient Egyptian religion (an ex-

tremely strong part of the book, especially in view ofmy subsequent work) was seen to be intertwined withan equally revolutionary theory of scienceDr. TomVan Flanderns exploded planets hypothesis.

The problem here was not that Van Flandernsthesis was demonstrably wrong (far from it), but thathis scientific thesis wasand still isunproven. Manyreaders (prejudiced against the book, which threat-ened to upset a whole lot of applecarts) used thisdubious science as an excuse to treat the wholebook with disdain.

Nevertheless, the mixture of science and my-thology which appeared in The Phoen ix Solutionhas served a useful purposein highlighting a very real problem faced by all ancient wisdom researchers, namely, how should one judge the level of ancient science when modern sci-entific knowledge of the Earth and the solar system is in a constant state offlux? In other words, todays scientific knowledge will not be the same as to-morrows scientific knowledge, so how can we possibly stand in judgment ofthe ancient science?

There is, of course, a much wider problem here, namely, a tendency forresearchers to impose modern preconceptions on anc ient art, architectureand literature. A classic example is the Von Danikenite tendency to interpretflying gods as pilots of aeronautical vehicles, and to interpret gods creatingmen and women in their own image as astronaut-scientists using the tech-nology of genetic engineering (I know the problem well, having fallen into thesame trap myself).

Mainstream scholars are also guilty of making similar mistakes. Early Egyp-tologists, such as J .H. Breasted and E.A. Wallis Budge, imposed their modernJ udaeo-Christian beliefs upon Egyptian Pyramid Texts dating from the era

i NEWSiNEWS2350 BC. Similarly, scholars from the 19th and early 20th centuries overlookedclear references to falling meteorites in ancient texts because they were un-comfortable with the concept of rocks falling out of the sky (one has only tothink of the famous comment ascribed to Thomas Jefferson: I would soonerbelieve that two Yankee professors lied, than that stones fell from the sky.

Today, 21st-century scholars are making the same mistakes all over aga in.The eminent astrophysicist Victor Clube, for example, has great difficulties withmy proposal that God was an exploded planet, but he is more than happyto suggest that God was an exploding comet. This is because an explodingcomet falls within the bounds of the science acceptable to Clube, whereasan exploding planet does not (at least not at the present time).

What is important, however, in the study of ancient mythology is not thecurrent state of scientific knowledgebe it aeronautics, genetics or astro-physicsbut rather the religious beliefs which were expressed by the ancientsthemselves. It is time, I suggest, that we listened to the ancients rather than lis-tening to ourselves.

It is for precisely this reason that I have adopted the approach in WhenThe Go ds Came Downof taking modern science out of the equation as far aspossible. To this end, I have avoided making any claim that planets really did

explode and that the ancients knew allabout it, and have instead explained howthe ancients might have derived their ex-ploded planet hypothesis via a perfectly log-ical and intuitive c ognitive processbasedon their experiences with meteoritesregardless of whether a planet did or did not

explode in actuality. The value of taking this approach is that Ican (and do) delve into a ll aspec ts of an-cient and modern religious beliefs withoutfalling foul of the hurdles erected by themodern astronomical consensus. Conse-quently, the exploded planet cult theorywhich I presented in The Phoenix Solution, can now be recognized for what it isa rev-olutionary breakthrough which opens up anentirely new vista on the origins of both an-cient and modern religion.

TDG :What p erce ptions do you have onthe sc ientific t hinking and c ap ab ilities of theancients?

A A : There is no doubt that the ancients were far more advanced scientif-ically than modern scholars would generally admitalthough the modernpicture of the ancients does seem to be changing rapidly. My impression isthat the ancients did their science using very different methods from thosegenerally used today. I would suggest in particular that the ancients placedgreater store in intuitive mental processes, allied in all likelihood with variousmetaphysical methods of data capture.

At the end of the day, we should not be dogmatic about whether the an-cients were more or less advanced than ourselves. In some areas they mighthave been more advanced and in other areas less advanced. We must al-ways remember that there is no law which says that the ancients had to beright about everything. And this is why we must treat their knowledge of ex-ploded planets with all due caution.

A A : I am very aware of commonalities between the ancient Near Eastand other cultures of the ancient world, and I hope to explore these further infuture books. I must be careful, however, not to jump to conclusions without athorough study of the ancient culture under consideration. Having said that, Imust say that the commonalities are not only wide ranging but also far moredetailed than one might reasonably expect. I see trouble ahead...

roudly carrying on deck anhonor guard in snappy uni-forms of dark blue, flags rip-pling in the stiff sea breeze, the five-year-old nuclear sub-

marine boomer Kursk, an Oscar IIclass vessel sailed proudly out into theRussian Sea. It w as Aug. 10th andKursk and her men were heading for aplanned series of w ar game maneuverswith the Northern Fleets cruisers, de-stroyers and one or more othernukes, in the cold waters of the Bar-ents Sea.

Like Titanic, Kursk was fitted withsuch safeguards and strong hulls that

she w as considered unsinkable.Named for the region in southern

Russia where Soviet tr oops had in1943 attacked and routed Nazi Ger-many during the largest tank battle inhistory, Kursk was not only the prideof the fleet, but intended to be asdeadly a weapon as the armored forcewhich destroyed the Nazi advance.

Five hundred feet long, Kursk wasan underwater missile launch pad, sleek flanks studded with two dozenmissile solos, each holding a cruise-type missile capable of launching itspayload into supersonic flight andaimed w ith deadly accuracy at such tar-gets as battleships or carriers of an op-posing fleet.

Kursk and her twelve sisterboomers were designed and partiallycompleted during the waning days ofthe Cold War, which had ended adecade before her sailing; and de-signed to beef up a rapidly decayingnaval force of older conventional sub-marines and surface vessels under Rus-sian command.

    P

    C ontinue d o n Pa ge 5 9

Newly upgraded and refitted with aset of chemical torpedoes, Kurskformed a big part of the modern Rus-sian fleet. These torpedoes were of atype, according to know ledgeable Int el-ligence sources, that had previouslyproven sometimes unstable. Theirliquid fuel systems had been totally re-worked, thus providing much moreconfidence in their peformance.Sources say that Kursk also carried anumber of tech reps and w eapons sys-tems analysts whose job was the careand monitoring of these apparentlymuch more reliable torpedoes. Fast andsilent, they were of the Squall type.

Although now denied, some sourcesstate that Kursk also carried a newertype of torpedo, capable of beinglaunched skyward and then guided likesmart bombs toward their targets. These ultra-modern projectiles havenever been proven to have been on theill-fated Kursk, but it is both logical andlikely that they were. This anti-submarine torpedo missile is fired notfrom a silo, but from an ordinary tor-pedo tube.

Accidental ignit ion of either type be-fore clearing the tube would be disas-trous to not only the torpedo firingroom but to ot her such w eapons storednearby. Squall type torpedoes reachspeeds of two hundred knots, buttravel in a gas capsule to reduce fric-tion from surrounding seawater, thusadding more perfect control.

Rocket propelled torpedoes carrythe risk of such ignition of the firstfiring stage while still inside their com-partment. Any leakage could virtuallydestroy anything within a radius of 350feet, including the boomers pressurehulls.

A letter written home from a Kursk

    THE OTHER SIDE

crew member mentioned that theywere whiling away some time whilewatching rockets being loaded intothe boat.

A Sudd en Sil enceOn August 11, Kursk had success-

fully fired a practice missile from a siloand Gennady Lyachin, Kursks Com-mander, had been pleased with the re-sult. Admiral Popov on the flagshipPeter the Great had also been pleasedand given the command to repeat themissile firing on the following day,Aug. 12.

    After reporting a second success

with this missile firing at about 1700hours, Kursk was to have followed upby coming to periscope depth (lessthan 100 feet) and preparing to fire asalvo of torpedoes at the designatedtarget. This sequence was verified byNorwegian and even U.S. watcherswho were doing their monitoring ofthe war games location from a safe dis-tance of 20 mil es or more away.

Unexpectedly, underwater explo-sions were detected by a Norwegianseismic Institute at 11:28 a.m. and11:39 a.m. on the 12th. ANCIENT MYSTERIES

here are many theories abouthow the pyramids of Egyptwere built. from bashingstones with stones, rubbingstones with copper and sand

to pouring the stones with a cement-like geopolymer. In writing the GizaPower Plant, I presented an engineersand machinists view of some of theseartifacts. From my experience in manu-facturing, I explained the minimum re-quirements to produce such objects. Idont believe that magical human, oralien, attributes were responsible forwhat we see in Egypt, so it was onlywith hard facts based on the evidencethat I concluded that a high level oftechnology was necessary to producethese ancient art ifacts.

My interpretation of the artifacts isclearly in conflict with orthodox theo-ries. The disagreement is based not juston the difficulty of cutting hard stone

(such as granite, diori te and basalt ), butalso all the available evidence, particu-larly the precision of the stones and thegeometry of their final shape. I donthave a problem with other theories aslong as they are held to the same stan-dard. They should explain how al l thecharacteristics could be producedwithin the parameters, or constraints, that are inherent to the technologythey propose.

Proponents of the conventionalprimitive method, as well as propo-nents of the even more daring and con-troversial theory that the stones werepoured, have challenged my conclu-

sions for l ack of hi stori cal support . Thehistorical evidence they refer to is thebody of knowledge or understandingestablished by academic bodies. Someof these challenges have been profes-sional and thoughtful, while some havebeen otherwise.

I am writing this in response towhat I believe is an unfair attack on mywork from Margaret Morris, the coau-thor In 1988 with French chemist Dr.Joseph Davidovits of The Pyram ids, anEnigma Solved. Davidovits proposedthat the stone work in ancient Egyptwas actually poured in situ, not cut. With his theory, he hoped to explainhow the cyclopean monolithic blockswhich many believe suggest a higherlevel of expertise than allowed by con-ventional theorycould be producedusing simp le methods available to p rim-itive cultures. I gave only two pages inThe Giza Power Plant to Dr. Davi-dovits theory, but in those pages I ad-dressed the poured stone theory suffi-ciently for a reasonable person to forman opinion about it s validit y in relation-

ship to the new information that I haduncovered.

In May 2000, I was challenged byMorris to debate in the Skeptical I n-quirer. She advised me that w e eschewusing the Internet as a forum for ourdebate; she also advised that w e avoidmagazines such as Atlantis Rising, where we would be at the mercy ofthe editor. In an e-mail she wrote:The debate must remain on a polite,

professional level so that it cannot berejected by an editor on the basis of un-professionalism. Do not take this re-mark personallyI mention th is onlybecause of some of theugly, unprofessionalexchanges that go on,which I t rust neither ofus wants to be a partof.

To which I r e-sponded Dear Margie,This is acceptable tome. I agree wit h youabout rising above theugly In ternet f ree-for-all....I am going out oftown for a while andw ill address the sub-ject when I get back.

For a long l ist of rea-sons, including mycomputer crashing andvaporizing all my e-

mails and addresses, I was unable to en-gage Morris immediately in this debate. It was my intent, though, that after Ihad cleared my calendar, I would takeit on. Morris, on the other hand, couldnot wait to do battle. I received an e-mail from Jeff Rense (the Jeff RenseProgram), who informed me thatMorris and one of her supporters, named Robert, were e-mailing him crit-icizing him for interviewing me. The

approach did not help her cause withJeff, for though I asked him to haveboth of us on the air to discuss these is-sues, he respectfully declined, stating

that the att itude andhostility displayed by

Ms. Morris was notconducive to a fruit ful

debate. Morriss truecharacter was soon to

    become evident.When her tactics

w ith Jeff did not work, and against her ow n

advice to avoid unp ro-fessionalism, Morris

then turned to the in-ternet to campaign

against my work andposted tw o blistering

    reviews against mybook on Amazon.com.

Because of the angry,ad hominem and ob-
