Description

Changes in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery are occurring at a rapid pace including advances in transoral robotic surgery, endoscopic skull base

surgery, diagnosis and treatment of patients with head and neck cancer, and the assessment and treatment of hearing loss. The goal of this course is to provide health care practitioners with a comprehensive update on current practices in all fields of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery.

Who Should AttendThis course is designed for practicing otolaryngologists – head and neck surgeons, nurses, speech-language pathologists and audiologists. Some course lectures will also be intended for facial plastic surgeons, endocrine surgeons, neurosurgeons, and pediatricians.

ObjectivesAfter attending this activity, the participant will demonstrate the ability to:• Discuss and apply new treatment options for facial

reanimation.• Discuss and apply functional nasal surgery after failed

septoplasty.• Outline advances in implantable hearing devices:

implantable hearing aid, osseintegrated implant, and cochlear implant.

• Discuss and apply current diagnosis and management of vestibular schwannomas.

• Discuss cough, globus, and pharyngitis and its relationship to gastroesophageal reflux as well as management options for when PPI’s fail.

• Evaluate dysphonia: common mistakes and how to avoid them.

• Describe how robotics are changing surgical management in head and neck oncology.

• Recognize how current understanding of HPV is changing the management of head and neck oncologic patients.

• Describe management of the neck in contemporary head and neck oncology.

• Outline surgical management of chronic rhinosinusitis in children: A summary of evidence-based practice.

• Discuss peri-operative decision-making in treatment of pediatric sleep-disordered breathing: considerations for PSG, pain, and post-op care.

• Recognize how to avoid common errors in functional endoscopic sinus surgery.

• Explain endoscopic skull base surgery: patient selection and tips for success.

ACCREDITATION STATEMENT This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and The University of Puerto Rico.
