It is the eve of Obama’s first election and four Harvard intellectuals find themselves entangled in a complex web of social

politics and lusty romantic relationships. A whirlwind of crackling dialogue and tricky questions are thrown at us by the fearless and funny Lydia Diamond in this provocative and funny new play. Diamond is most well known for her play Stick Fly that was produced on Broadway by Alicia Key and Reuben Cannon and directed by Kenny Leon. Smart People is moved forward by the complicated relationships of sexy intellectuals, while one neuroscientist, Brian, is hell bent to prove through brain scans and kinetic waves that racism is a fact of nature not nurture. What Brian’s scans reveal may rock some worlds but not everyone is shocked by the outcome.

A McCarter commission that enjoyed its first public reading here in Atlanta by True Colors in 2012, Smart People premiered at the Huntington Theater in Boston in 2013. This past February, Smart People had a successful off-Broadway run at Second Stage Theatre directed by True Colors own, Kenny Leon. Atlanta and True Colors are in good company to present the

third production of this play.At the helm of this steamy Atlanta

production is director David De Vries and the cast includes Atlanta fan favorites Danielle Deadwyler, Neal Ghant, and Joe Knezevich. What Variety calls, “Sexy, serious and very, very funny”, one thing is for sure, Smart People is not to be missed.

Thurgood, about the first African-American Supreme Court Justice, charts Marshall’s evolution from back-alley Baltimore to the highest court in the land. September 29 – October 16, 2016.

Tom Key directs Big Fish, a musical ver-sion of the hit film. Edward Bloom’s tall-tales thrill everyone except his son, who demands the truth behind Dad’s stories of giants, fortune-telling witches and mermaids. No-vember 17 – December 18, 2016.

Lost in the Cosmos: The Last Self-Help Seminar, adapted by Key from Walker Percy’s book, plops us into a live seminar where group leaders suggest alternatives to modern day obsessions like reality TV, horoscopes and how-to guides. February 9 – 26, 2017.

Simply Simone: The Music of Nina Simone, spotlights one of the true divas of the 20th

century, laying bare the legacy of an icon whose work spans genres from jazz to gospel to Broadway to rock and roll. March 23 – April 15, 2017.

The Alabama Shakespeare Festival celebrates 30 years since opening in Montgomery, Alabama, with a lavish

production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the play that initially opened the theatre in 1985. This production, on stage through May 8th, features of a cast of nearly 30 actors, gorgeous handmade costumes and majestic sets, along with a dancing fairy court and a flying Puck.

As ASF wraps up their 30th anniversary season (other plays in repertory through May 8th include Driving Miss Daisy, The Comedy of Errors and the World Premiere of White Lightning), they look to the next 30 years with an announcement of the 2016-17 season line-up, which will be Producing Artistic Director Geoffrey Sherman’s final season with ASF.

“The Most Terrifying Live Theatre Experience in the World,” The Woman in Black, opens the season in September on the Octagon Stage with a psychological thriller that the Daily Telegraph calls “entertainment at its very best.” Also opening in September, Charlotte’s Web on the Festival Stage will charm young and old alike with its timeless story of one terrific pig. A special limited engagement of Gravedigger’s Tale from the Folger Theatre, an interactive retelling of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, will be onstage in October coinciding with the

Shakespeare’s Folio exhibit at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts. A new musical based on the Newberry Award-winning and NYT bestselling novel, Because of Winn Dixie comes to ASF on its way to Broadway in January, quickly followed by Shakespeare’s Two Gentlemen of Verona and a new adaptation of Sherlock Holmes in March. ASF mounts a world-premiere production of a Southern Writers’ Project play Dauphin Island by playwright Jeffry Chastang on the Octagon Stage at the end of March, and beginning in April another world premiere of a Kenneth Cavander adaption, this time of Shakespeare’s The Tempest, which will be directed by Geoffrey Sherman (the final Shakespeare of his ASF career). Finally in the summer of 2017, that beloved nanny is back with a blockbuster production of Disney’s Mary Poppins.

Singer Gregory Porter has made it his passion to breathe life and honesty into the musical genres he has loved since boyhood in Bakersfield, California when Nat “King” Cole entered his heart. Bakersfield was an epicenter of country music. But much of the population moved therefrom the south, bringing with them gospel, rhythm and blues, and jazz.

Those early influences can be heard on his Porter’s latest two Blue Note albums. Liquid Spirit earned him his first Grammy Award in 2014 for Best Jazz Vocal Album. His new album, Take Me To The Alley, is already receiving raves from critics and fans.

“I laugh about the mix of people who come to my shows,” says Porter. “There are songs that a 68-year-old grandma likes. And there are hard-hitting, bass and funk-infused things. As a jazz artist I like appealing to the non-jazz head by speaking to the human heart.”

Grammy Award-winning pianist, singer, songwriter Eliane Elias is known for her

distinctive sound which blends her Brazilian roots and her sensuous voice. She started studying piano at age seven and began performing at seventeen. Her first album was a collaboration with Randy Brecker in 1984 entitled Amanda. Since then she’s released 25 albums, selling more than two million worldwide.

Highlights of Elias’ career include her nomination with Herbie Hancock for a Grammy for Best Jazz Instrumental Video for “The Way You Look Tonight” from her 1995 CD Solos and Duets; the lush 2008 CD Bossa Nova Stories which marked the fiftieth anniversary of the birth of Bossa Nova; 2011’s dazzling Light My Fire featuring compositions by Elias as well songs by The Doors, Stevie Wonder and Paul Desmond. Elias’ 2015 CD Made In Brazil won a Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Album which was especially sweet since she served as producer, composer, lyricist, arranger, pianist and vocalist on the album.

SHAKESPEARE FANS OF ALL AGES

Summer is fast approaching, bringing reminders of the famous line from Shakespeare’s “Sonnet Eighteen”: “Shall I

compare thee to a summer’s day?” The Atlanta Shakespeare Company’s lineup of five shows at the Shakespeare Tavern Playhouse and camps for students from pre-kindergarten to high school in locations around the city will be a cool antidote to the hot and muggy weather. ASC’s summer Main Stage shows range from the thought-provoking to the riotously funny with Two Gentlemen of Verona in May, The Merchant of Venice and The Taming of the Shrew in June, A Midsummer Night’s Dream in July and The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) in August.

ASC’s summer camps, Shakespeare Superheroes, Jr., Shakespeare Superheroes, and Shakespeare Intensive for Teens (SIT), will allow younger fans of Shakespeare to learn about the playwright and experience the joy of live theatre. In 2015-2016, ASC’s education programs, including in-school residencies, workshops, and touring shows, reached students at 190 public and private schools in sixty Georgia counties and five states, and ASC’s summer camps are an extension of those wide-reaching programs that give

students the skills and the confidence to speak Shakespeare’s lines for themselves. ASC’s Education and Training Director Laura Cole explains how summertime learning also supplements students’ school-year studies: “So many teaching professionals speak about how student learning can take a nose dive in the summer months. The Atlanta Shakespeare summer programs are really fun and inclusive programs tailor-made to delight students with poetry, games, crafts and fun culminating, for the Superheroes and SIT kids, in performing Shakespeare’s text on the Main Stage. The big secret is that Georgia students study Shakespeare three times (at least) in public school and many more times over the earlier grades in some counties. Our summer programs support their school year learning by subtly reinforcing what they have learned in their English Language Arts classes about Shakespeare, language and the history of the English language. While playing games and creating costumes, no less!” With so many opportunities to explore Shakespeare on and off the stage, the Atlanta Shakespeare Company offers something for everyone this summer.

This season includes seven world premieres,

five musicals, five productions by Atlanta playwrights, and ex-ceptional productions for youth and families. The 2016/17 season marks the Alliance’s last year in the current theater space before the complete renovation next year.

Highlights include The Prom, a new world premiere Musical directed by Casey Nicholaw (Tuck Everlasting). Lookingglass Theatre is back with an acrobatic and fantastical version of Moby Dick, you might remember them from Lookingglass’ Alice in the 2009/10 season. Atlanta’s Janece Shaffer is premiering a new play — with original music by Sugarland’s Kristian Bush. And to cap it all off, there will be a world premiere adaptation of Melissa Fay Greene’s book The Temple Bombing, about a definitive moment in Atlanta’s history.

On the Hertz Stage, the Alliance will have a former Alliance/Kendeda Competition finalist; this year’s Alliance/Kendeda winner; a hilarious and provocative Reiser Atlanta Artist’s Lab winner; and Atlanta favorite Courtenay Collins bringing some holiday cheer. There will also be three world premieres for families, including a musical adaptation of Eric Carle’s Pancakes, Pancakes!, a new production for middle school audiences, and a contemporary

musical spin on the classic Cinderella story by Janece Shaffer.

Whether Lee Harper is choreographing or painting, she seeks to

create an emotional connection between herself and others. In an unusual twist, the paintings in her new Gallery Show, “Out of the Ashes”, represent a deep emotional connection she now has with the members of

the Madison, Ga. Fire Department, with-out whom the art show and sale would not be possible. “Out of the Ashes” will be held Thursday-Friday, May 19 and 20 at Lee Harper Studios in Atlanta, and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Madison Fire Department, whose mem-bers rescued the paintings from destruction in December, 2015.

“Just before Christmas, my husband and I received a phone call alerting us that the Vason Building in Madison, where I had many paintings displayed and stored, was on fire,” said Harper. “When we arrived at the scene, I was overjoyed to discover that the members of

the town’s volunteer fire department had first protected my paintings with plastic cover-

ings to shield them from water, and then safely removed them from the

building. I thought showing all of the pieces together would be the best way to convey the scope of

the work they saved, and by selling the paintings, I could make a finan-

cial donation to the fire department to show my appreciation.”

More than 40 fine arts paintings and photographs

were saved from the fire. They include landscapes,

figures, still lifes and abstracts, painted with

bold, vivid colors in oils and acrylics. The

art show will also include a number of

Harper’s newest works. “Out of the Ashes” will be held May 19-20, 5-8 p.m., at Lee Harper Studios, 3080 East Shadowlawn Ave., Atlanta, GA 30305. THE WAY WE GET BY is sure to be just that. It’s a romantic comedy about about love, lust and the whole darn thing.

The play stars LaBute veterans Grant McGowen (Reasons To Be Pretty, Autobahn, Some Girls) and Tyner Rushing (The Shape Of Things). It’s also Directed by Morgan McGowen, who co-starred with Rushing in LaBute’s The Shape Of Things and most recently directed Quiara Alegria Hudes’ Pulitzer Prize-winning Water By Spoonful.

“I find myself challenged to confront my own society’s views on gender and image,” says Rushing on LaBute’s plays. “He delves into the darker side of humanity with his characters and their relationships,” adds Director Morgan McGowen. “He’s not afraid to really go there and find the beauty in the darkness.”

Rushing also notes, “the best part of working on this play is the people for sure. I hold Morgan and Grant in such high regard.” Actor Grant McGowen agrees, “I’m totally in love with these people.”

“The Way We Get By is a refreshing look at love and modern relationships,” says Director Morgan McGowen. “The main characters, Beth and Doug, put it all on the line and there is something heartwarming about that. Just two humans trying to find real, honest love.”

Atlanta blossoms in the spring with popular outdoor festivals drawing crowds nearly every weekend. From

classic artist markets to interesting locales, Atlanta’s festivals have a style all their own and offer something for everyone.

Local food festivals continue to grow in popularity each year. The newest is the Atlanta Taco Festival (May 1) at Candler Park. It’s the largest of its kind on the East Coast and features live Lucha Libre Wrestling. Atlanta Street Food Festival (June 11-12) is moving to Stone Mountain Park to accommodate growing crowds. And for regional fare, there’s the Atlan-ta Food & Wine Festival (June 2-5) in Midtown.

Families can also find a variety of events, including Atlanta Streets Alive (June 12). Peachtree Street will be closed to vehicles from Downtown to Midtown, allowing pedestrians and cyclists to participate in activities along the route. Families may also enjoy the Decatur Lantern Parade, part of the Decatur Arts Festival, on May 13.

For a taste of other cultures, there’s the Marietta Greek Festival (May 15-17) and Atlanta Caribbean Carnival (May 28). The Festival of Chariots (June 5-7), inspired by a 2,000-year-old Indian festival, is also bringing a parade to Centennial Olympic Park.

Many of Atlanta’s in-town neighborhoods

also host annual festivals. Inman Park Spring Festival (April 30-May 1), Kirkwood Spring Fling (May 14) and Virginia-Highland Summerfest (June 4-5) all have artist markets, live music and a tribute to local architecture with organized tours of homes.

And, not to be left out, are the festivals dedicated to music. Atlanta Jazz Festival returns to Piedmont Park on Memorial Day weekend as one of the country’s largest free jazz festivals. Perhaps one of the most unique festivals is at Oakland Cemetery. At Tunes from the Tombs (June 18) stages are set up throughout the cemetery for live bands.

Before heading out to any of these fes-tivals, here are some tips to help make your experience a great one. Take public transpor-tation when possible. Double check what’s included in admission, especially at food festi-vals. And when it comes to pets, always check with the festival to see if they’re allowed.
