Atlanta HOGWASH October 2015 www.atlantahog.com www.facebook.com/groups/atlantahog/ THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE ATLANTA CHAPTER, INC., CHAPTER NUMBER 0788 DIRECTOR’S CORNER: Happy October Atlanta Chapter H.O.G.! We have finally made it through the hot Georgia summer and are heading into the prime riding season. People from all over the country come to our north Georgia Mountains to ride the challenging roads, see the beautiful fall colors, and view the scenic overlooks. Keep a watch on the calendar for a ride that suits you, we should have some for you to choose from. Remember that if there is a ride destination you would like added, let one of the chapter officers know and we’ll do what we can to make it happen. I have just returned from a beautiful ride through Mobile, Biloxi, New Orleans, Natchez Trace, and Tupelo! There were 11 of us traveling together making memories and enjoying our Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Melissa and I have really enjoyed the past several years of spending time and riding with our extended family in the Atlanta Chapter; it seems everywhere we travel we meet more people that share our enthusiasm of the open road! As I’ve said before, the best way to make the most of your chapter membership is to participate and volunteer. We’re not only the original H.O.G. chapter in Georgia, we are also the best H.O.G. chapter you will find anywhere! We have something else to be thinking about…In December at the Christmas party we will award one male and one female something that is very close to the hearts of our Atlanta Chapter, “The Heart of the Rider” award. Chosen by chapter member vote, this recognition exemplifies two people who exhibit the passion of riding, helping others, and supporting our chapter. This year will be a tough one to decide who gets this prestigious recognition since there are so many who have stepped up to make our chapter the BEST! At our October meeting we will have the vote and the results will be a closely guarded secret until the party in December. *note* This award is for non-officers in the chapter. If you aren’t able to come to the October meeting and would like to vote, email me with your choices at [email protected] (voting deadline 10-15). I’ll close by reminding everyone that it’s you, our members that make our chapter great! Keep up the spirit and continue living up to our motto, “Ride and Have Fun”. Ride on! PIG RIDE LEGEND ONE PIG: Non-curving terrain and a ride of short duration (50 miles round trip) TWO PIGS: A few gentle curve and be a bit longer (100 miles round trip) THREE PIGS: Long ride (200 miles round trip) with curving terrain and urban area traffic. FOUR PIGS: Lots of curves, some with “decreasing radius” turns and/or cover a major distance requiring a good deal of technical skill and stamina. Major traffic such as I75 can be part of this rating. FIVE PIGS: Most difficult category due to the severity and number of curves combined with a long ride. The Southern Highroads Trail, Suches, and Gatlinburg would fall into this category.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR’S CORNER As this Hogwash is being sent, final preparations are being done for our Chapter Pic Nic on Sunday. There is a surprise in the works that all should appreciate. Hope to see you there! I personally am loving the weather and looking forward to some great riding as this is my favorite time of year. Once again, if you have a ride or destination, let us know and we will try and put it together. Ride safe! Tom "Pelican" Rapp, Assistant Director TREASURER’S ARTICLE: ATTENDANCE JACKPOT Congratulations to Tony Cohran whose name was drawn for the September Attendance Jackpot. Tony was not at the meeting to claim the $60. We will add $10 to the Jackpot for the next chapter meeting, bringing the jackpot to $70. Remember you must be at the meeting and a member in “Good Standing,” a current member of national H.O.G. and Atlanta Chapter. If the member whose name is drawn is not at the meeting, we will add $10 and try again next meeting. Please have your National H.O.G. card with you at the meeting. Hope to see everyone there. René Durham, Treasurer MEMBERSHIP CORNER: Active Members: 280 Inactive Members: 1 The month of August was STELLAR for event, ride, and volunteer participation! We are now at 280 Members with 1 inactive due to National Membership expiring. Check the sign-in sheet when you ride and if your name is in red your membership will expire in the next 3 months. I believe there are only a few. For event participation in August, there were 18 folks at Mexi-Monday, 11 folks attended Movie Night, and 17 were at Wing Wednesday. Eight rides went out last month with 106 riders who traveled over 20,800 miles! I would wager we are one of the most active H.O.G.'s in our region. The 30 in 30 is also gaining numbers with each event, ride, or volunteer participation. SAFETY CORNER: RIDING IN A GROUP When riding in a group, everyone should be abiding by the same rules. To assist in understanding them, I have identified ten basic rules below: Base the length of the route and segments on ability of the least experienced rider. Take timely breaks to prevent loss of concentration and reduce fatigue. Adjust the pace through curves to the ability of the least experienced rider. If necessary, form two

groups with different speeds. Don't tailgate or encourage the rider in front to speed. If you want to ride faster, ride ahead of the

group. Keep adequate following distance and maintain a staggered formation. Do not pass in the group, except in the case of emergency. Place inexperienced riders just behind the leader so they can keep pace without riding faster than it

is safe. When passing, be conscious of the traffic conditions and oncoming traffic. Even though the

previous riders passed safely, it may not be safe for you. Maintain adequate time distance between riders, especially at intersections. This allows you to avoid

hard braking. Check your mirrors frequently to ensure the group stays together.

Adapted from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation Publication -"You and Your Motorcycle - Riding Tips" Mike Laymon, Safety Officer GEORGIA SUPER SPEEDER LAW Under Georgia Code 40-6-187, a 'Super Speeder' is any driver who is convicted of driving 85 miles per hour or more on any road or highway, or 75 miles per hour or more on any two-lane road or highway. In addition to any other fines or penalties imposed by any local jurisdiction, the Department of Driver Services will collect a fee of $200 from any driver who is convicted and classified as a 'Super Speeder.' The DDS shall notify offenders of the imposition of a fee under this Code section within 30 days after receipt of a qualifying ticket and notice of conviction. Failure to pay the fee imposed by this Code section within 90 days after receipt of the notice shall result in the suspension of the driver's license or driving privileges of the offender, and, in addition to the existing fees and penalties, a fee of $50 shall be assessed, payable upon the application for reinstatement of the driver's license or driving privileges. Notice shall be provided by the department to the offender by first-class mail to the address shown on the records of the department. Such mailed notice shall be adequate notification of the fee imposed by this Code section and of the offender's ability to avoid a driver's license suspension by paying the fee prior to the effective date of the suspension. No other notice shall be required to make the driver's license suspension effective.
