1 WELCOME
1.1 Welcome by the ITU
Marisol Casado ITU President, IOC Member Greetings and welcome to the 2017 Kitzbühel ETU European Triathlon Championships, I am extremely pleased to welcome all European triathletes once more to Kitzbühel, an extraordinary city that has a long‐time history of hosting triathlon events. You all probably know the special relationship this city has with winter sports, but is not only a destination for skiing lovers around the world. Kitzbühel has proven itself as a great set up for triathlon races, hosting a World Triathlon Series five times, and now welcoming, fort he second time in history, the top European triathletes fort he European Championship. And I am very confident that it will be, as
always, a wonderful race. The European Championships are amongst the largest and most historic continental championships on the ITU calendar, as we will be celebrating this year the 33rd edition of this championship. The race attracts the top talent year after year and I know this season it will be no different, with more than 1500 triathletes coming from 40 different countries gathering on this amazing course. The intriguing race layout has always produced exciting events, which this year will include age group races, paratriathlon, elite, junior, kids and a mixed relays European Championship to prepare our athletes fort he Hamburg Worlds. I don’t want to miss the opportunity to thank the European Triathlon Union, Austrian Triathlon Federation, the local organising committee and the city of Kitzbühel for helping us to turn, one more time, this beautiful ski resort in Austria into a triathlon town every summer. And to all the athletes, volunteers, organisers, media and stakeholders, welcome tot he beautiful city of Kitzbühel, where you will enjoy the great spectacle of triathlon at its best this summer.
6
1.2 Welcome by the ETU
Renato Bertrandi ETU President Kitzbühel was magical in 2014. It was the opportunity for many Age Group athletes to race the circuit that they had previously seen on TV as part of the World Triathlon Series. The beautiful lake and the challenging bike course with the spectacular finish was now available to them. We received impressively positive feedback from the many athletes who raced there and their families, and this made it clear that the right choice had been made to hold the European Championships in this beautiful location. It is rare that we return to a venue so soon but what Kitzbühel has to offer is truly special.
This year we separated the Standard Distance and Sprint Distance Championships as the number of Age Group athletes continues to grow with more and more racers singing up each year. 2017 will see more then 800 Age Group athletes proudly wearing their national uniform. Some will be defending titles they won last year in Lisbon, some will race for the very first time. Whatever their ability, whatever their experience, I am certain that the Austrian Triathlon Federation will welcome them warmly and ensure that their racing weekend will be truly memorable. We will also see some 300 Elite, Junior and Para athletes compete for medals and, of course, the all‐important ETU Ranking Points. Furthermore, we are excited to see that this Championship weekend will also include events for 400 children, who we know will be delighted to have the chance to race and finish on the magical blue carpet. With athletes from 40 countries racing in Kitzbühel I am pleased to say that we have a truly representative European Championships, and I look forwards to seeing you there. Good luck to you all!
1.3 Welcome by the Mayor of Kitzbühel
Dr. Klaus Winkler
Mayor of Kitzbühel
Kitzbühel has a long tradition of hosting triathlon events. The first races at Lake Schwarzsee were held in the 80ies and 90ies of the last century. When Kate Allen, who started her triathlon career in Kitzbühel, won Olymic gold in 2004, she kicked off a veritable triathlon craze in Tyrol, and Kitzbühel started to host more and more triathlon events.
In addiition to being a multi‐time host for the Triathlon ITU World Championship Series, Kitzbühel was also the venue for the Triathlon European Championships in 2014. As Mayor, I am proud that Kitzbühel is at the forefront of triathlon in Tyrol, and I am extremly pleased that we are again hosting European Championships, this time taking place from 15 to 18 June 2017. I would also like to thank the Organizing Committee and the countless voluntteers who toiled hard to make this event possible.
7
The city of Kizbühel offers their full support for the triathlon championships, and we are excited about the opportunity to showcase Kitzbühel in the summer. On behalf of Kitzbühel, I offer the best wishes to the event organizers and all of the athletes, and an exciting race weekend at Lake Schwarzsee for the spectators.
Mit sportlichen Grüßen
1.4 Welcome by the President of the Austrian Triathlon Federation
