We are so proud to celebrate the fourth year of the Athena Film Festival, which has already become a wonderful Barnard tradition. This vibrant celebration has attracted thousands of people to campus. They love the films we screen and the robust and provocative conversations that invariably follow. To be able to host this gathering of filmmakers and women leaders is truly a privilege for the College.

Over the course of the weekend, we will share with you the stories of women who in spirit and accomplishment reflect the aspirations we have for all Barnard women: to be bold, brilliant, forward-thinking, willing to advocate for themselves and others, and committed to making our world a better place. We hope that the Athena Film Festival will inspire and engage you and bring you back to Barnard, time and again.

Thanks so much for joining us at the fourth annual Athena Film Festival. This year’s festival includes an amazing array of films about women and leadership. Directed by talented filmmakers, the features, documentaries, and shorts tell stories of courage, grit, persistence, and indomitable spirit.

We are proud this year to honor distinguished women who have left their mark on the film industry. From Sherry Lansing—this year’s recipient of the Laura Ziskin Lifetime Achievement Award—to Callie Khouri, Kasi Lemmons, and Keri Putnam, the award winners have led with grace and integrity, blazed trails, and set an estimable example for women who aspire to leadership.

Julie parker Benello ‘92 is a co-founder of Chicken & Egg Pictures, which provides grants to and mentors female filmmakers. Films of note include 2012 Academy Award winner Saving Face, After Tiller, and Pariah. Benello is also a Founder and Managing Director of Gamechanger, a new fund that

invests in narrative features by women directors.

debra martin chase is the President of Martin Chase Productions, which is affiliated with the Walt Disney Company and ABC. An Emmy-nominated motion picture and television producer whose producing credits include The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, The Princess Diaries, and

the American Girl movie franchises, Chase was producing partner of the late Whitney Houston at Brown House Productions and led Denzel Washington’s at Mundy Lane Entertainment.

dan cogan is the Executive Director and Co-Founder of Impact Partners, which since 2007 has been involved in the financing of over 45 documentary films that promote social change, including Oscar-winning The Cover and the Oscar-nominated films The Garden, Hell and Back Again, and How

to Survive a Plague. Cogan also co-founded Gamechanger Films, which invests in narrative features by women directors.

diane Levin p ’13 is an educational advocate, serving on the boards of the Oakwood School, IMPACT Theatre Group, and the Parents’ Council at Barnard. Levin co-produced the Web series, Georgia, for the WIGS channel and is a producer of The Zookeeper’s Wife, based on the book by

Diane Ackerman and adapted by Angela Workman.

FESTIVAL CO-CHAIRS

Jon Levin p ’13 is a motion picture literary agent at Creative Artists Agency where he represents many of the world’s leading filmmakers. Since joining CAA in 1979, Levin has represented a wide range of talented actors and directors including Brad Pitt, Will Smith, Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman,

Ron Howard, and Robert Zemeckis.

mira nair is an internationally acclaimed director, screenwriter and producer. Her debut feature Salaam Bombay! received more than 25 international awards, including an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. Other films include Monsoon Wedding, Hysterical Blindness,

The Namesake, and Amelia. In 2012, the President of India awarded Nair the Padma Bhushan, India’s second highest civilian honor.

Sheila nevins ’60 is President of Documentary and Family Programming for HBO and Cinemax. At HBO, Nevins has overseen production of nearly 500 documentaries, earning nine Oscars, 13 Primetime Emmys, 22 News and Documentary Emmys and 18 George

Foster Peabody awards, as well as a personal George Foster Peabody award. She also received a 2005 News and Documentary Emmy for Lifetime Achievement. Nevins was inducted into the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame in 2000.

regina K. Scully is the CEO and Founder of Artemis Rising Foundation and the Athena Film Festival’s founding sponsor. After journalism stints at Seventeen, FOX Television, and CNN, Scully moved to public relations, first at Hill & Knowlton and later at L’Oreal Cosmetics and Christian

Dior Perfumes. In 1995, she founded and became CEO of RPR Marketing Communications, specializing in brand marketing and publicity. Scully executive produced the Oscar nominee The Invisible War, as well as Miss Representation, Boyhood Shadows, and The Big Picture.

About The Laura Ziskin Lifetime Achievement Award

The Laura Ziskin Lifetime Achievement Award is given to a woman in the film industry whose leadership demonstrates vision and courage and sets a standard for other women to emulate. One of Hollywood’s leading independent producers and studio executives, Laura Ziskin (1950 - 2011) used her talents, energies, and standing to make award-winning movies and to improve the lives and health of women.

Beginning with the 1985 film Murphy’s Romance to No Way Out, her producing credits included a string of hits including Pretty Woman, which she executive produced in 1990. In 1994, Ziskin was named President of Fox 2000 Pictures. Under her stewardship, Fox 2000 released such award-winning films as Courage Under Fire, One Fine Day, The Thin Red Line, and one of the most successful franchises in Hollywood, the Spider-Man films.

After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004, Ziskin, along with Katie Couric, Sherry Lansing and others, created Stand Up to Cancer, a research and advocacy organization. Ziskin produced the historic Stand Up to Cancer telethon that was simultaneously broadcast on all major networks, raising millions for the organization, and she told her story repeatedly, so that women suffering from cancer would know that they are not alone.

Sherry Lansing: The 2014 Award Winner

During almost 30 years in the motion picture business, Sherry Lansing earned a reputation as a trailblazer, a visionary leader, and a creative filmmaker. She was involved in the production, marketing, and distribution of more than 200 films, including Academy Award winners Forrest Gump, Braveheart, and Titanic. In 1980, she became the first woman to head a major film studio when she was appointed President of 20th Century Fox. Later, as an independent producer, Lansing was responsible for such successful films as Fatal Attraction, The Accused, and Indecent Proposal. In 1992, she was named Chairman and CEO of Paramount Pictures and began an unprecedented tenure that lasted more than 12 years (1992-2005), during which the studio enjoyed enormous creative and financial success.

Today, Lansing runs the Sherry Lansing Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to cancer research, health, public education, and encore career opportunities. Lansing also serves on the University of California Board of Regents and on numerous boards of organizations that fight cancer, including the American Association for Cancer Research Foundation, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network and STOP CANCER, a non-profit philanthropic group she founded in partnership with the late Dr. Armand Hammer. Lansing is also a co-founder of Stand Up To Cancer.

2014 Athena Film Festival Awards

Callie Khourioscar-Winning Writer and Film and tv creator and director

Callie Khouri galvanized women and sparked a nationwide debate in 1991 with the hit movie Thelma and Louise,

her screenwriting debut, which was nominated for six Academy Awards. She received the Oscar, the Golden Globe, the Writers Guild of America Award and a PEN Literary Award for Best Original Screenplay, among other awards for that film. Other writing credits include Something to Talk About starring Julia Roberts, Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, which she directed and adapted for the screen, as well as Mad Money, which she directed. In 2006, she wrote and directed the television drama, Hollis and Rae and in 2012, she created and now executive produces the hit T.V. drama, Nashville.

Kasi Lemmonsgifted actress, director, and Writer

Lemmons’ work as an actress includes roles in The Silence of the Lambs, Hard Target, School Days, and Vampire’s Kiss. A recipient of a special first time

award from the National Board of Review for Eve’s Bayou, her first feature-length directing effort, it became the highest grossing independent film of 1997. Another film, Talk to Me was released in 2007 to widespread acclaim. Her most recent film, Black Nativity, based on Langston Hughes’ musical, was released in November 2013. Upcoming projects include an adaption of On Beauty based on the novel by Zadie Smith.

Keri Putnamvisionary executive director of the Sundance institute

Keri Putnam oversees all programs of the global non-profit Sundance Institute, including the Feature and Documentary

Film Programs, Sundance Film Festival, the Film Music, Theatre, and Native American and Indigenous Programs. She is also responsible for expanding the Institute’s international work. Putnam leads Institute initiatives to provide independent filmmakers access to digital distribution and to identify and lessen roadblocks for women in the independent sector. Before joining Sundance, Putnam served as president of production for Miramax Films, the Walt Disney Company’s specialty film division, and was executive vice president of HBO Films, responsible for the development and production of films for both the cable network and for theatrical release.

The 2014 Athena ListAccording to the Center for the Study of Women in TV and Film, in 2011 only 33% of all characters in the top 100 grossing films were women, and only 11% were the protagonist of the story. This represents a decrease from 16% in 2002. The lack of strong female characters in movies is striking, and makes producing and financing films that star women all the more difficult.

To help remedy this, the Athena Film Festival has created the Athena List, an annual slate of between 3-5 screenplays with strong female protagonists that have yet to be made into films. Selected an elite group of industry professionals, six finalists will be announced in January, 2014 prior to the festival and the winning screenplays will be recognized during the festival Awards ceremony.

Grace Lee Boggs ’35 is a 98-year-old Chinese American woman living in Detroit. The Bechdel Test—which rates films based on the simple criterion that they contain at least two female characters who talk to each other about something besides a man—has

been widely adopted to test whether women are being realistically represented in film. Yet according to the USC Annenberg School for Communications, 2012 was the worst year in the past five for women onscreen, with only 28% of roles going to women. While we need to increase the number of roles for women onscreen, maybe it is time for a more sophisticated discussion that also focuses on the types of roles women play. Join us as a panel of industry professionals will examine how women can play substantive and wide ranging roles in film.

Leymah Gbowee is a Liberian peace activist, trained social worker, and women’s rights advocate. Her leadership of the Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace brought together Christian and Muslim women in a nonviolent movement that played a pivotal role in ending Liberia’s civil war in 2003. Her efforts ushered in

a period of peace and enabled the free election in 2005 in which Ellen Johnson Sirleaf was elected President, making Liberia the first African nation to elect a female president. Featured in the award-winning documentary film, Pray the Devil Back to Hell, Gbowee, Johnson-Sirleaf, and Tawakkul Karman won the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize for their work. She is currently serving as the inaugural Distinguished Fellow in Social Justice at Barnard, a transnational fellow with Barnard’s BCRW and a fellow with the Athena Center.

gLoBaL programSDeveloped in collaboration with UN Women and the U.S. Mission to the United Nations, the Athena Global Shorts (a 56-minute DVD) includes four short films (Tasnim, Northeast Front, The

Director, and Umoja: No Men Allowed) that celebrate the power, audacity, and creativity of international women leaders. The program, sponsored by ADP, is available to women’s organizations, companies and classrooms. In 2013, along with allies from across the globe, the Athena Film Festival helped launch the International Women’s

Film Festival Network (IWFFN) to support and promote women’s voices, visions, and leadership, both onscreen and behind the scenes. With 49 film festivals participating from across the globe and still growing, the Network strives to amplify the visibility of women filmmakers, more prominently showcase their work, and demonstrate that audiences will attend films about women and girls.

The network met and held panels at the 2013 Berlin International Film Festival and at the Toronto International Film Festival. More events are scheduled in 2014. Learn more at www.iWFFn.com
