Confirmation 2009For all middle and high school youth (at least 12 by 6/1/09)

“Confirmation” is the time when a personal deci-sion is made to confirm the vows of our baptism. AtNew Creation, this happens as a group of students jointogether for a semester of exploring who Christ is,what it means to know Him through a life-long rela-tionship, and how we follow Him as United Metho-dists. The Confirmation then takes place in a ceremonyof students publicly declaring their commitment toChrist and desire to become full adult members of ourchurch family. Our first prayer is that each student in-volved will commit to a real and personal faith. Oursecond prayer is that they will begin to cherish the richheritage we have as United Methodists.

Confirmation is not simply a “rite of passage.” It isnot just a class to take because every one else is. It is astep in a life-long journey of pursuing the heights anddepths and widths of God’s love and making a vow tolive in relationship with Him for the rest of our life!Come join the Journey.

“Landfills are choking on E-waste.”- U.S. News & World Report, Dec. 31, 2007

E-Waste Facts •Americans are buying more com-puters than any other nation. Currently over 50% of UShouseholds own a computer • Some studies estimatethat as much as 75% of old, used equipment is in stor-age, where it takes up space and becomes more obso-lete and less valuable • An average PC (not including themonitor) is typically 40% steel, 30-40% plastic, 10% alu-minum and 10% other metals, including copper, gold, sil-ver, cadmium, and platinum • Many people discardcomputers every 3 years • In 2001, only 11 % of personalcomputers retired in the US were recycled.

What Can I Do?Contact Steve Booker at [email protected]. Steve (an Aldersgate member) will refurbish your dis-carded computer to a useable state. Once it is refur-bished it can be donated to a low-income family, usedin the church if suitable, or sold to raise funds for ourchurch’s missions. Unuseable components of the sys-tems will be recycled or properly disposed of. Do You Know the UMW?There is a small but vibrant group of women working in our church… the United Methodist Women. ALL women of the

congregation are considered members; ALL can attend and participate in the quarterly UMW meetings, and ALL can par-ticipate in one of our Circles. Currently there are three Circles in our church: Ruth Mayhall, Dana Tyson, and Sunshine. NewCircles may be formed at any time, provided there is leadership and interest. You may participate in UMW meetings withoutbeing a Circle member.

What does the UMW do? In 2007, the Aldersgate UMW gave to Missions as follows: Tidewater Wesley Foundation @ODU; United Methodist Family Services; EDMARC; helped a member’s child w/ medical expenses; Aldersgate Mission Tripto Mississippi. At the close of 2008, UMW voted to donate to the Grace Harbor Jamaica Mission Trip, Aldersgate MissionTrip to MS, Pastor’s Discretionary Fund, UM Family Services, and the Wesley Center.

UMW sponsored the Valentine's dinner in February and Bake sale in conjunction with the UMM barbecue in March.UMW meets quarterly and has programs such as Russian Children’s informational program courtesy of Kathy Williamson;Christmas Around the World program; and other guest speakers. The UMW, and in particular Sandy Stapleton, has beenresponsible for many years for the annual Mission kits, to include collection, assembly, and delivery to annual conference. The UMW sponsors UMW Bookshelves with recommended reading for women and makes book purchases every year. TheUMW and all Circles were a part of the Departing Pastor’s reception and hosted the UMW District Advent Breakfast.

What does a Circle do? That is, of course, determined by the membership. Members pay dues to the Circle and makea financial pledge to the UMW. For example, this past year Sunshine Circle sponsored a senior at Western Branch HighSchool in the purchase of his yearbook; contributed to the Suffolk Tornado Victims Fund and to Maggie Smith, young livertransplant patient; awarded a Missions pin; participated in Valentine’s dinner and Altar flower removal as well as participatedin UMW Sunday. Sunshine has recently contributed to Operation Military Shoebox in conjunction with a group from WesternBranch Baptist (ongoing), and often sponsors at Thanksgiving and Christmas needy families with gift cards, clothing, andfood. Sunshine routinely sends out cards of sympathy, encouragement, and joy to church community members. One oftheir favorite fundraising activities is the annual January elegantly re-wrapped gifts bidding- this adds quite a bit to ourtreasury and we have a wonderful time out-bidding each other. As a result of this activity, we now have at our regular meet-ings a wrapped gift for raffle purchase. We have found this to be an easy way to increase our funds. Sunshine also providesan annual collection of school supplies for WB Primary and WB Intermediate. Recently we collected Beanie Babies for SarahRhodes to use in her work with Operation Smile in Brazil. Sunshine meets approx. 6 times a year.

Dana Tyson Circle stays very busy as well! From the start of the year, they held an installation of officers ceremony, helped with the UMW Valentine’s dinner and made Valentines for shut-ins. On a regular basis, they cook for EDMARC- mak-ing potatoes, beans, entrees, and cakes that can be frozen and used for families with children in Hospice. In the spring,Dana Tyson Circle takes lunch to the Tidewater Wesley Foundation at ODU and sends Easter cards to shut-ins. They madea donation in memory of former pastor Dawn Marie Singleton’s father. For teacher appreciation week in May, they servedbreakfast one morning at G.A. Treakle Elementary School and gave meal assistance to Circle members following surgery.Like Sunshine, they welcomed the Drinkard family with a gift and took a break during the summer months. In the fall theyserved lunch for the Golden Rule Sunday School class for their officer installation, took entrees and cakes to EDMARC, senta donation to a school in the Philippines following hurricane damage. This Circle is named after the missionary Dana Tysonwho served for years in the Philippines. Also, the Circle made small gift bags for the shut-ins for December and assembledand packed over 80 school kits. To close the year, they purchased gifts for a family from HER Shelter and made plans tocater a brunch in January. Dana Tyson Circle sends birthday cards to Missionaries listed in the Prayer Calendar, sends cardsto our church’s shut-ins, participates in the Altar Flower removal and UMW Sunday. The matriarchal Circle is Ruth Mayhall. Faithful participants have been Betty Buell, Peggy Whitehurst, Lottie Morgan,Wilsie Wood, Grace Kampman, Ann Matthews, Frances Skinner, Lettie Solomon, and Betty Talton. While these ladies maynot be able to participate as fully as in the past, their legacy is to inspire the current UMW membership to always strive tomake a contribution in whatever way possible to the mission and purpose of the United Methodist Women. Their examplesof leadership, effort, and enthusiasm are always inspirational. The UMW is indebted to Fran Shearer for her past two years as UMW president and the outstanding job she has done.We welcome Edwina Nichter as the new UMW president and look forward to the direction she will lead the organization. Please contact either of these ladies for more information about meetings and Circles. To report on the UMW one must include our Purpose, something we recited at all of our meetings. “The organized unitof the United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose PURPOSE is to know God and to experience free-dom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of missionthrough participation in the global ministries of the church.” We hope that YOU, a woman in our congregation, will join us at our next meeting and see how you can enjoy and learnfrom the other women of our UMW. It is a privilege to participate in the far-reaching organization known as the UnitedMethodist Women. See http://new.gbgm-umc.org/umw/ for more information about this amazing group and then join us!Giving of yourself to missions is a reward worth having and YOU are always welcomed!

Also Coming Soon... “Generation Change”for Middle & Hi School YouthA 5-week course on Finances designed

with youth in mind. BeginningWednesday, January 28th, 7 p.m. in the Aldersgate Youth Lounge.

Every day our youth are bombarded witha million different voices—everything frombillboards to internet ads—telling them whothey are and measuring their worth by whatthey have. The pressure to be accepted intoday’s stuff-centered world drives them, andperhaps even their parents, to throw moneyaway on things that don’t matter—all in anattempt to “be somebody.”

The result? We’re raising a generationthat spends money they don’t have to buythings they don’t need to impress peoplethey don’t even like! It’s time for a change!

While the Lord calls me to be wise and discerning, he reminds me often that hisdiscernment cannot dwell in a cynical, distrustful heart. With Him, there is nohidden agenda and no ulterior motive. Hisgifts are free for the taking but I cannot takethese gifts if my hands are already full of myown weapons of self-protection. Therefore, He asks me to lay down the shields that I haveforged for protection and to pick up the shieldof faith in their place. He asks me to take Him at His Word. - Katherine Walden

Trustin TOUGH times

A new sermon series at Aldersgate January 11 - February 1, 2009

1/11: Can I Trust God When Life Makes No Sense? Is the Bible relevant to my life? Can it really help me?

1/18: Can I Trust God When I Am Suffering?Where is God when I suffer? What does it mean to have faith in suffering?

1/25: Can I Trust God When My Family is in Crisis?Does God care about my family’s problems? Can prayer help? Why do my children sometimes seem like strangers? Why are my parents so angry all the time?

2/1: Can I Trust God’s Love In Every Circumstance? She’s dying... can I trust God? I don’t feel safe... can I trust God? My savings are gone... can I trust God?I fear dying... can I trust God?

God is God. Because He is God, He is worthy of my trust and obedience. I willfind rest nowhere but in His holy will, awill that is unspeakably beyond mylargest notions of what He is up to.

-Elisabeth Elliot in “Gateway to Joy”
