Monterrei In the heart of Spain’s Northwestern corner, Galicia, known to most as ‘Green Spain’ lies Atalaya do Mar, family owned & operated for over 70 years. Atalaya do Mar Mencia Aged for 3 months in French oak. Deeply colored with an expressive nose of spice box and black raspberry, on the palate it is smooth-textured, forward and well-balanced. It is an excellent value for drinking over the next 4 years as well as a good introduction to the Mencia grape. 100% Mencia 3 Months aging French Oak The Mendez family has been in the wine business for over 70 years & have always resided in this small corner of Spain, Galicia, just north of Portugal where people have been making wine since Roman times. Today the most famous varieties in the region are Albarino & Godello for whites & Mencia for reds. Atalaya do Mar has a small production of 10 hectares, most of which is Godello & the rest, Mencia. The soils are filled with slate stones which gives the wines a mineral note & expressiveness that other regions in Galicia don’t have.
