coconut water, higher tender water quantity (300 to 400 ml per nut), high yielding (80 to 150 fruits per palm per year). It is predominantly grown in home gardens and also preferred in landscapes as ornamental. As often the fruit fetches good price owing to the demand in the market, keeping few trees of this promising cultivar in home gardens ensure good additional income and provide delicious tender coconuts to the family. The seedlings of this cultivarare early splitting, vigorous and the palms are early flowering (about 36 to 40 months after planting) with regular bunch production over the years. The cultivar has not by any major pests under field conditions but observed to be susceptible to spiraling whitefly and rhinoceros beetles when compared to other dwarf cultivars and varieties. The palms give better performance with summer irrigation or else the bunch production may get affected. Benefit: The climate and soil in the whole of Andaman and Nicobar Islands is highly suitable for growing coconut palms. Owing to the market demand for the attractive brightorangecolour of fruits and tender coconut yield, the cultivar could be planted for tender coconut purpose in plantations and in home gardens. Thousands of aspiring women and men have benefitted from this scheme. One such beneficiary is Shri Parthivan who hails from Rangat, N&M Andaman. At the age of 26, Parthivan has proved how a combination of hard work and determination could be the best essence for a successful business enterprise. Though a Civil Engineering Graduate, he was inclined towards running a business and his father owning an arecanut tree farm, catalysed his dreams. Having come across a success story on PMEGP scheme of KVIC in the most widely circulated Govt. Newspaper, the Daily Telegrams, he approached the KVIB office for an inquiry on how can he make use of the benefits of the scheme. On being counseled, without giving a second thought, Parthivan immediately decided that he will apply for financial assistance through PMEGP scheme and approached the Branch Manager, SBI, Rangat. The Branch Manager was convinced with the idea of setting up Arecanut plate manufacturing unit as it was a new concept for the area concerned. On being sanctioned with an amount of Rs. 3,24,500/-, he started his unit at Rangat and is successfully running his business. Parthivan remarked that PMEGP scheme has brightened his life. He has also given employment to unemployed boys in his unit. Today, he is a proud entrepreneur. (Source: ANIKVIB)

coconut water, higher tender water quantity (300 to 400 ml per nut), high yielding (80 to 150 fruits per palm per year).
