Since privatisation the growth in railway passenger numbers has been substantial, with over half a billion more rail journeys annually than 10 years ago. Forecasts suggest that by 2020 there will be similar growth; a further 400million annual rail journeys undertaken compared with 2013.

The modernisation of the rail network and the schemes such as the expansion of electrified routes, introduction of intelligent information and traffic management systems, and improvement of line speeds involves ongoing development of the UK’s infrastructure.
