MARLBOROUGH Marlborough is responsible for 77% of New Zealand’s wine production and is synonymous with Sauvignon Blanc. It’s best known for white wines with impressive aromas, fruit characters and acidity, although experts can differentiate the sub-regions by taste. Awatere wines have a chalky minerality, Wairau Valley wines have fruit intensity and body, and the Southern Valleys are considered the best for Pinot Noir and aromatics.

CLARE VALLEY South Australia’s Clare Valley is a 120km drive from Adelaide and one of the country’s oldest wine regions. It is home to around 50 smaller wineries, yet while it produces only 2 percent of the nation’s wine, it wins 7 percent of the awards.Clare Valley has a continental climate with warm days and cool nights, and due to its altitude the grapes ripen evenly, which the winemakers appreciate. The region’s Riesling is considered Australia’s most elegant, and its Shiraz and Cabernet is very highly regarded.

HAWKE’S BAY Hawke’s Bay saw its first vintage in 1851 when its warm climate and long growing season was recognised as being ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blends, Syrah, Chardonnay and aromatics. Its many sub-regions enjoy the same long sun hours and maritime climate, but the schist-based Gimblett Gravels produce reds with international reputations.
