PASSENGER DOOR ESCAPE SLIDE DESCRIPTION/DEPLOYMENT

Passenger Door Escape Slide Description/Deployment

A slide deployment can be initiated when ever the dooris opened in the emergency configurationWhen the slide is armed it can be checked on a redindicator, located on the button of the slidedecorative cover. As soon as the door handle is lifted the door opensand the escape slide is ejected from its container andthe inflation system is activated. The deployment and inflation sequence is automaticallyinitiated when the cabin door is opened. The slide deploys into its final usable position within3 seconds. The escape slide is connected to the cabin floor by agirt extension which is attached to the girt bar atthe door sill.Should the escape slide not inflate automatically ared manual inflation handle must be pulled. This handleis located on the girt extension.Let’s have a look at the inflation system. The system is automatically activated as soon as theslide is ejected from its container. The valve regulator assembly incorporates a directreading, temperature compensated pressure gage, whichindicates the gas charge in the inflation reservoir, relative to ambient temperature. The gas stored within the inflation reservoir isdischarged into the inflatable through flexible hosesand an aspirator.Ambient air is drawn in, through the flaps of theaspirator by the partial vacuum, created by the highvelocity in the venturi.

Then the flaps close and the remaining gas charge topsthe inflatable up to its operating pressure.Inflation is therefore rapid and reservoir size ismaintained at minimum.Restraint devices are used to control the deploymentsequence. The primary restraint mechanism is a precision fusefrangible link, which separates at a predeterminedforce value. In case of pressure loss, no fail handles, located onboth side of the runway end, allow the inflation tobe used as a hand-held evacuation chute. In the event of a ditching, grasp lines are fittedaround the outside of the inflatable to facilitate theuse of slide as a flotation device. The slide is equipped with a lighting system. The lights located along the side tubes and across therunway, are supplied from the aircraft emergency powersupply units. The lights are automatically supplied with power whenthe slide is deployed. The escape slide can be disconnected from the aircraftfloor whenever necessary. For the disconnection the following steps must betaken.Lift the flap of the girt extension to gain access tothe white disconnect handle.Pull the handle. The girt extension incorporates a quick releasefeature, a daisy chain, which permits rapid detachmentof the inflatable from the aircraft.

PASSENGER DOOR ESCAPE SLIDE RAFT DESCRIPTION / DEPLOYMENT

NOTE : In this module the PASSENGER DOOR SLIDEDESCRIPTION / DEPLOYMENT is described on theA320 but the principle is the same for the A319and the A321.

DESCRIPTION

The forward and rear cabin doors of the A320 areequipped with slide rafts. The inflation and deployment sequence is automaticallyinitiated when the door is opened in armedconfiguration. The slide raft is ejected out of its container, andremains folded by restraint devices which break atdetermined pressure points to allow correctdeployment. The slide raft is stowed in a container connected tothe cabin door.

NORMAL OPERATION

As soon as the door handle is lifted, the door ispneumatically pushed open and the slide raft, fixedwith a girt bar to the cabin floor, is pulled out ofthe container, drops down and inflates automatically. As the inflatable falls down, the inflation system isactivated. The gas stored in the inflation cylinder is dischargedthrough flexible hoses to the aspirators. The aspirator flaps open and ambient air is drawn inunder partial vaccum, created by the high velocity inthe venturi. Then the flaps close and the remaining gas, tops upthe inflatable to its operational pressure.

Should the automatic inflation system fail, the slideraft must be inflated manually.

MANUAL OPERATION

For that, the red manual inflation handle located onthe right hand side of the girt extension must bepulled.A lighting system is fitted on both sides and on therunway end of the inflatable. The power supply forthis lighting system is provided by the cabin emergencypower supply units. Two assist handles are located on both sides at thelower end of the inflatable, to allow assisting peopleto hold on.In case of a ditching, prior to door opening thesurvival kit must be connected to the slide raft. Thesurvival kit is stored in the nearest overhead bin.Place the survival kit on the floor, forward of thedoor, detach the lanyard from the girt bar.Pull the lanyard and the hook, to snap on front of thesurvival kit. Then open the door. The slide raft drops out of the container and deploys.

OFFWING ESCAPE SLIDE DEPLOYMENT

NOTE : In this module the OFFWING ESCAPE SLIDEDEPLOYMENT is described on the A320 but theprinciple is the same for the A319.

The offwing escape slide is packed in a containerassembly, which in turn is mounted into the centrefuselage belly fairing. Two type "3" exits are located over each wing and arealways in armed configuration. Two emergency lights underneath the wing exits lightthe escape way leading to the escape slide which ispointed out with red fluorescent arrows. The opening of one wing exit will initiate thedeployment sequence. The escape slide is ejected out of its, container anddeploys in approximately four seconds. The inflation system consists of an inflation cylinder, which is located in the aft cargo compartment.Activation of the release mechanism initiates theinflation sequence. The gas stored in the cylinder is discharged to theinflatable slide through flexible hoses and anaspirator. The aspirator flaps open and ambient air is drawn intothe slide. The slide remains folded by restraint devices, whichbreak at a predetermined force, to permit correctdeployment. Two black arrows located on the ramp section indicatethe direction of the escape route.A lighting system is provided on the slide. The lights are located on the ramps along the sidetubes and across the runway end.

A red manual inflation handle, located in each exitframe, must be pulled to manually activate theinflation and deployment sequence, in case of automaticrelease failure. If the slide is deployed but not inflated, it stillcan be used as a hand-held escape chute. On the ramp section top, a hook is located and thishook must be connected to an attachment fitting on thewing. Two red NO FAIL HANDLES are located on both sides ofthe escape slide on the runway end.Four able bodied men must hold the deflated slideextended, by means of the no fail handles, to allowthe passengers on the wing to descend.

EMERGENCY EQUIPMENT/EMERGENCY EXIT ESCAPE SLIDE

DESCRIPTION/DEPLOYMENT

The escape slide for the type "C" doors, is storedunderneath the door inside the fuselage.

The inflation cylinder is located in the overhead bin, over the door.

The cylinder is in a protection box and can be seenthrough a plexiglass window.

The pressure can be checked on the pressure levelindicator. For correct pressure the needle must be in the greensection.

To initiate the slide deployment, the door must beopened in the armed configuration.

To open the door, uncover the control handle, lift thehandle fully up, and release!

The door opens outwards. The escape slide in themeantime inflates and deploys completely. The escapeslide is ready for use when the door is locked in thefully open position.

Should the door open but the escape slide not inflate,a red handle for manual inflation is located in thedoor upper right hand frame.

The transparent protective cover must be taken off andthe red handle pulled to initiate the manual slideinflation.

The escape slide for the type "C" doors is stowed ina special compartment in the fuselage, underneath thedoor.

The deployment sequence starts as soon as the door isopened in armed configuration.

One aspirator is connected to the inflation cylinderby means of a flexible hose.

During the door opening the inflation cylinderregulator value is actuated, and primary gas issupplied to the aspirator. The aspirator flaps openand outside air is drawn in. The flaps close as soonas the correct pressure is reached.

The slide has a single lane sliding surface with abrake path at the bottom end, which slows down thespeed of the evacuees.

A lighting system is fitted along both sides and atthe bottom of the slide.

The lights automatically come on during the slidedeployment. They remain on as long as the emergencypower supply operates.

A reentry strap is fixed on one side of the slide.

A yellow life line is fixed along the outside of theinflation chambers on both sides.

Red no-fail handles are located on both sides forassisting people to hold the slide in case it is usednot inflated as an evacuation chute.

The slide is slightly canted in order to deploy atsafe distance away from the engine.

CARGO LOADING OPERATIONS

CARGO LOADING

The cargo compartments can be loaded with differenttypes of containers :- full size container.- half size container.- pallet. The FWD cargo compartment of the A320 can receive threecontainers or pallets and the Aft cargo compartmentfour.Let’s have a look to the A320 aft compartment loadingand unloading.Switch on the compartment lights.Lower the two manual sill latches.Lower the XZ-latches.Switch on the power on the control panel. The cargo loading system is ready to be used. The container itself lowers the overridable silllatches. When the container is over the lateral Power DriveUnit, move the joystick to the "IN" position. At the end of the lateral travel, move the joystickto the longitudinal position. The longitudinal Power Drive Units move the container. When the container is in position, lift thecorresponding XZ-latch.It locks the container and de-energizes the PDUunderneath it.Load the other containers by following the sameprocedure. When the last container is loaded, lift up the twomanual sill latches then check that the two overridablesill latches are up.

When the cargo loading is completed, the power can beswitched off.

CARGO UNLOADING

For the cargo unloading, first of all, lower the manualsill latches, then switch the power ON.Lower and hold down the sill latch switch, theoverridable sill latches lower.Move the joystick to the "OUT" position, the firstcontainer moves out.Lower the XZ-latch locking the next container. Theassociated PDU is available.Unload the container using the joystick.Do not forget to lower the overridable sill latchesbefore moving the joystick to "OUT".Unload the other containers using the same procedure. When the cargo compartment is empty, switch off thepower and lift-up the manual sill latches.
