STRATEGIC THRUSTS
At West Spring, we define excellence as holistic and multi-dimensional; just as we define the successes of our students according to their many diverse talents, and multi-faceted in their aspects and phases.
The definitions are based on our belief, that All Children Can Learn, given the right conditions. In 2017, we implemented Subject-based Banding (SBB) in Secondary One, with students in the Normal streams taking out-of-stream (OOS) subjects at more demanding levels. We offered NT-to-NA and NA-to-Express English, Chinese, Malay, Mathematics and Science. The students are progressing well, with more students inserted into the groups after the mid-year examination.
In addition to our students being academically-driven to deliver their best, they also did well in their Co-curricular Activities (CCA), such as Sports and Uniformed Groups. At the Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentations, our Aesthetics Performing Arts Groups achieved high standards. Our Display Band played at the ASEAN Youth Games Opening Ceremony.
West Spring’s mission is to nurture Ladies and Gentlemen in Pursuit of Excellence. We see and know Excellence when we experience it. Our students take responsibility for their own learning, not just in studies but also for Values-in-Action (VIA). From School Cleaning, Food Donation Drives, to Fund-raising Bazaar, culminating in the Secondary Three Overseas VIA and Project Touching Hearts, our students exemplify the school values of Respect, Responsibility, Resilience, Integrity and Care.
Our community rallies all stakeholders to the common school vision of Global Citizens of Character and Learning. Our Teachers are Leaders; Parents are Effective Partners in their children’s education. 2017 has seen the School Advisory Committee and Parents’ Support Group grow in strength and concerted effort towards achieving the school’s goals.
As an excellent school, West Spring is not just performing “up to standard”, producing students who are merely competent, we provide a more expansive view of excellence, which includes developing in students a love for learning, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, aesthetic appreciation, and positive inter-personal relationships. Our West Spring ladies and gentlemen are confident, educated and cultured citizens able to participate fully and contribute substantially in society and for the nation.
West Spring is an excellent school; a caring and learning community. It will continue to grow and accomplish far more than expected, in the years to come.

When asked, “Is West Spring a
Good School?” As the principal, I say,
“It is an Excellent school! Come and see for yourself!”
PRINCIPAL’SMESSAGE
WEST SPRING SECONDARY SCHOOL • YEARBOOK 20174
I belong to a networking group founded about 20 years ago. The recent annual networking session was not organised by the founding members but rather the children of the founding members. When I started off in my career and was assisting their parents, all of them in this organising committee were still toddlers. In the blink of an eye, 20 years have passed. Even as the next generation steps up to take over the reins of the family business, the perennial grouse I hear from the parents is that this generation is just too soft.
I am sure you have heard of the phrase “strawberry generation”. The term is not exactly complimentary and it refers to the generation of youths who are unable to take hardship and “bruise easily” like strawberries.
It is undeniable that life today is not as hard as in the days when our forefathers first set foot on this land. We did not have to deal with the atrocities of the Second World War and the challenges in the early years of nation building. In that sense, we never had the “privilege” of having to endure that sort of hardship. I refer to it as a “privilege” because only in hardship is one’s character honed. As it is often said: “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.”
But does it mean that there are fewer opportunities to develop our character today? Certainly not. I believe that every generation produces its own heroes, because every generation faces new challenges. In those days, the challenge was managing a scarcity of resources. I think the challenges that you face today are even greater than that. You will face an attack on the very core of your life: increasingly we see a threat to the family structure and personal morality because of the pace of life, globalisation and the pressure to succeed. Without these two pillars, we will cease to exist as a mankind.
So, in the midst of all the things you have to do for the day, do take a pause and reflect. Better still, take some time to day dream. Remember to protect the values and institutions that have brought you here.
To our dear graduating class, this generation belongs to you. Keep your feet firmly planted on the ground but let your mind reach the highest skies. We hope to see many heroes from your ranks.

Though susceptible to strong water currents, these corals continue to thrive in the ocean, thus reflecting their strength in in adversity. In addition, the brightly coloured corals reflect passion in life, lighting up the dark ocean bed. The dance also serves to honour the daughters of the fishermen for their beauty and perseverance.
Through the rigorous and demanding training, the Chinese Dance inculcated a strong sense of self-discipline and team spirit in each of their dancers.

Achievements of our students:
“THE NEED FOR SPEED”Trevor, however, is not the youngest member of the national short-track team. That accolade goes to 12-year-old Alyssa Pok, who also showcased her talents at the Southeast Asian Short Track Trophy. The Secondary 1 student at West Spring Secondary School won three gold medals in the Junior D girls category in the regional event.
Going even faster is the teen girl’s aim, as she looks to compete against ice skaters of an even higher calibre in the future. “I think I can still improve my technique and timings,” she said. “The next level is the Asian trophy as I have to benchmark myself against stronger countries like China and South Korea, where they’ve got more ice-time than Singapore. When I’m age-eligible, I’ll then take part in the Youth Olympics, where I can get more experience to take part in other (higher-level) competitions,” added Pok, who used to do gymnastics when she was younger.”(Read more at http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/sport/future-looks-bright-for-singapore-s-speedsters-on-ice-7575298)
