Dear friends,

It is amazing to me how people on both sides of the aisle politically and culturally responded to the recent visit of our Holy Father Pope Francis—each side trying to claim him for their particular side.

To understand our Holy Father, you need to remember that he is not a politician, a scientist or an economist. He is the Pope and the spiritual leader of the world. And he views life through the lens of eternity to remind all of us—left and right, liberal and conservative, lay and

religious—about things eternal.

It is in this context that he reminds us that anything unrestrained in life leads to disaster—whether that be our own personal beings or the economy—that God calls each one of us to be the good stewards of creation, especially the summit of creation, human beings, protecting the sanctity of life from the moment of conception to natural death—and that the most beautiful thing that God created is the family, as God designed it—between one man and one woman.

One last thing that I most admire about our Holy Father is his profound love for what the world would describe as the little, insignificant people of life. Who of us wasn’t touched when Pope Francis stopped his motorcade, got out of his Fiat and walked back into the crowd to hug and kiss a boy, crippled by cerebral palsy, and his parents?

Someone once said that you measure the greatness of a person’s character by the way that person treats people from whom he or she can get nothing—the little, insignificant people of the world. Beware of people who treat the rich, the powerful and the famous one way and the little janitor or waitress or a little, sick child another way.

We are blessed to have a person with such great character to be our Pope. Each one of us could learn a lot from him. May God Bless you! Yours in Christ Fr. Joseph Shea

The school, mindful of its mission to be a witness to the love of Christ for all, admits students regardless of race, color or national and/or ethnic origin to all rights, privileges, programs and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school.

The school does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, disability, sex or national and/or ethnic origin in the administration of educational policies, admissions policies, scholarship and loan programs, and athletic and other school-administered programs, although certain athletic leagues and other programs may limit participation and some archdiocesan schools operate as single sex schools.

While the school does not discriminate against students with special needs, a full range of services may not always be available to them. Decisions concerning the admission and continued enrollment of a student in the school are based upon the student’s emotional, academic and physical abilities and the resources available to the school in meeting the student’s needs.

What is happening next Sunday at Mass for those

ready to move forward in our parish’s RCIA process?

The initial inquiry (pre-catechumenate) period for our parish’s group of inquirers will be moving into the second stage, with our first opportunity for unbaptized inquirers to go through the Rite of Acceptance into the Order of Catechumens, and baptized inquirers to go through the Rite of Welcoming next Sunday. The first phase of the journey of initiation has been a time for seekers to hear the mystery of Christ proclaimed. The inquirers have consciously and freely sought the living God and entered the way of faith and conversion as the Holy Spirit opens their hearts. We ask you to please pray for the inquirers as they continue their conversion journey and for our RCIA process as we assist them in moving toward a closer relationship with God. Your prayers are critical to the success of our program. We will continue to keep you informed of the initiation process and progress of those considering joining the Church. We invite you to take an active role in welcoming our soon-to-be catechumens and candidates, and to be models of faith and Christian charity for them. Please give Julia Dobrucki a call if you have questions or would like further information: 805-915-4625, or email at [email protected]

The Mystery of the Mass Revealed

Altaration addresses head-on one of the biggest problems we all face: how do we get more Catholics to appreciate the awesome beauty and mystery of the Mass…and to actually look forward to attending and participating?

Through a unique learning experience, including powerful cinematography and workbook resources, You will come to see the Mass and the priesthood in a dramatically new way. Altaration is designed to stir thought, create conversation, dispel myths, and inspire souls to a deep and lasting love for the Mass. The goal of Altaration is not to fill our heads with information but to pierce our hearts with transformation.

RESPECT LIFE

When secrets become dangerous

There is no better time of year to review the important family rules that help to keep all children safe. It takes just a few moments to review with your children what to do in an emergency, who the special and safe adults in their life are, and the importance of not keeping secrets. Some secrets, like a gift for a special occasion, can be fun and safe to keep. Secrets that hurt others, involve any kind of unsafe or inappropriate touching or anything that bothers a child – are secrets that are NOT safe to keep. Help your child understand the difference. For a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Back to School: Secrets,” email: [email protected].

Next weekend our parish will celebrate World Mission Sunday.
