Undergraduate Exchange Program

An undergraduate exchange program is underway between Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth and International School of Engineering at Chulalongkorn University

Equal 3 -for- 3 (on average) annual exchange of undergraduate engineering students for one term (semester) of study

Aimed at Chula (ISE) students in beginning of their fourth year and Dartmouth students in latter part of their third year

How does it work?• ISE students (probably 3) go to Dartmouth in

August 2012• Work full-time on research/design project for first

two weeks (senior project for ISE)• Study at Dartmouth’s Thayer School of Engineering

during their fall term (September - November)– Take three courses (full course load)– Work part-time (about 5-8 hours/week) on senior project

for 10 weeks during the term

• Work full-time on project again for 3 weeks after classes end

• Return to Thailand at beginning of January– Turn in senior project report after returning to ISE

Exchange term at Dartmouth• ISE exchange students will be enrolled as full-time students

at Dartmouth for the fall term and will be able to use all facilities normally available to Dartmouth undergraduate students – Library, computer facilities, sports facilities, extracurricular

activities, etc.

• ISE exchange students will be given orientation sessions upon arrival at Dartmouth– This will include familiarization with all facilities at Dartmouth,

academic advising, and participation in hiking/camping trip with other new Dartmouth students

• ISE exchange students will be housed in an undergraduate student dormitory on the Dartmouth campus and will eat in the student dining facilities

Some courses that could be taken by Chula students at Dartmouth

• Biol 46 - Microbiology• Engs 26 - Control Theory• Engs 35 - Biotech and BioChem Engineering• Engs 37 - Intro. to Environmental Engineering• Engs 61 - Intermediate Electronic Circuits• Engs 63 - Intro. to VLSI Systems• Engs 76 - Machine Engineering• Engs 91 - Numerical Methods in Computation• Engs 92 - Fourier Transforms and Complex Variables• Engg 129 - Instrumentation & Measurement• Engs 130 - Mechanical Behavior of Materials• Engs 131 - Science of Solid State Materials• Engm 184 - Introduction to Optimization Methods• Tuck 2 – Introduction to Marketing

Examples of senior projects (research) that have been done recently by ISE exchange

students at Dartmouth

• Evaluation of backside wear of polyethylene materials for artificial knee joints

• Fabrication and testing of micron-size striplines and evaluation of current flow during switching of the striplines

• Development of magnetic nanoparticles for cancer treatment

• User-oriented text summarization• Design and analysis of frame and suspension for

Dartmouth Formula Hybrid vehicle

Finances• ISE exchange student pays normal tuition at ISE, no

tuition is paid to Dartmouth (Dartmouth provides full-tuition scholarship)

• Student responsible for transportation, room, meals, books, health insurance

– Total estimated cost for Chula student at Dartmouth is about $6000 for 5 months, including room, meals, books, health insurance, local transportation;

– Round-trip transportation from Thailand to the US and the cost of a US visa will be an additional 50,000 Baht or so.

• Student may possibly earn up to $1000 for working on the internship project to help defray expenses

Visa, health insurance, etc.

• Each participating ISE exchange student must have a passport that is valid for at least six months past the end of the exchange period

• Dartmouth will provide documentation allowing the ISE exchange students to receive a US exchange student visa
