What is your}My dad taught himself to play piano and never read a note of music. He played his own music and some jazz by ear but I grew up mostly listen-ing to recordings of Glen Gould playing Bach. My dad played them over and over and I knew every note. Playing the flute puts me in touch with some magical sound deep down that I can’t explain but I have in my heart. I always try to express that sound. I am not sure what it is.~
— Nancy Marfisi, principal flute
Three Decades of Passion for the Music
Thank you to everyone who has helped us grow and thrive over 30 years of wonderful music. It’s quite an accomplishment and you should be very proud. As we begin this Anniversary Season, it is clear that all of us involved in the Music Guild – subscribers,
orchestra, board members, and audience – have a passion for music. Your support has trans-formed that passion into thirty years of great music, and we look forward to many more!
So I ask you, what is your musical passion? What is it about music that touches your soul? Why do you come to concerts? Why do you subscribe? What compels you to donate so that we can engage talented soloists and commission and perform new music?
Members of the orchestra gave some interesting and moving responses to this question, and we’ve highlighted some in this season brochure. Many trace their passion for music back to their youth and family traditions. For others, their passion is more idealistic or philosophical.
Please tell us. Share your thoughts when you subscribe by mail or online. Visit our Facebook page or send an email to [email protected]. We would like to know what moves you and, unless you request otherwise, we’d like to share your passion for music with others during our Anniversary Season.
We have a great 30th season for you. Please enjoy the music!

}Music is a universal language that allows us to communicate
what is in the depths of the human spirit. It speaks to all of us across different generations and cultures. Music helps us to find
connections within ourselves and with each other.~

}I was born to be a Romantic. My mother attended Rachmaninoff’s last public performance three months before I arrived in this world. My family played music all the time because we made up a quartet of violin, viola, cello and piano. I loved playing music by the great Romantic composers and still do. It’s in my DNA.~

}Music is the passion that consumes my heart and soul. It allows me to
laugh, cry, celebrate, mourn, and pray anywhere and anytime and helps to eliminate the minutia of my world (if
only temporarily). I can experience a great ‘explosion’ of emotion and
then a ‘calmness’ to my life in a mere moment of time, AND ‘my cello
don’t talk back to me!’~

}I was 10 years old and had only been playing violin a couple of years when I realized that music is a gift of joy I can give to others. My Grandpa Seiler was a very stoic German immigrant – a man of few words and not much outward emotion. He was very caring, but didn’t show it. My
parents played piano and one Christmas, my father insisted we play a duet, an old German folksong – Wien, Wien, nur du Allein. When we were finished, my Grandpa had tears in
his eyes. I was struck by his emotional reaction to our little performance. I don’t think I really understood it then. All I knew
was that my Christmas gift of music made Grandpa Seiler smile.~

}I never know when – or what – music will hit me. Classical, jazz, rock, or film music.
I can be sitting at a concert, conducting, driving in my car, or watching a movie on TV,
and bam – all of a sudden I get emotional. Sometimes, when I’m just talking about
music, I get all choked up. I’ll never forget the time my wife Robin and I went to see
the children’s film Pete’s Dragon. When the music swelled at the end of the movie, she
looked over at me and I had dissolved into a puddle of tears. Go figure.~

}Growing up in Vladivostok in a family of musicians, I was exposed to a lot of music and learned the importance of
sharing music with family and friends. Shostakovich has a special place in my heart. I love his intensity, pain, sarcasm
and protest. My father was the first violinist to perform his Violin Sonata
in Saint Petersburg. I played it on my graduation recital in his honor.~
