With summer upon us, the heat and humidity certainly are up. Aswe enjoy swimming, cook outs, and family vacations; another crea-ture lurking beneath many of our homes is also becoming muchmore active. However, the food and fellowship this little terrorenjoys, is eating its way through the wood that supports your home. They can invade through a crack as thin as a business card and arequick to invite thousands of their friends to enjoy the feast. If youhave not yet guessed as to which creature I am referring, it is theEastern Subterranean Termite.

Each year in the United States termites cause over $5 billion indamage to homes and structures. This is more damage than fires, storms, and tornadoes combined. And while most of these itemsare covered by your homeowners insurance, termite damage is not. This is why it is imperative that you have your home treated andregularly inspected by a licensed termite professional. The protec-tion you gain can save you thousands of dollars in repairs down theroad.

A question we get time and time again from our customers is: Whatcan I do to better protect my home from a termite infestation?Below are a few simple steps to make your home a less invitingenvironment to not only termites but other pests. 1. Do not place stacks of wood against the foundation of your home.Wood should be stored 20 feet away from your home and at least 8inches off the ground.2. Keep shrubbery trimmed back at least 18 inches from the side ofyour home.3. Be sure to promptly fix any leak as moisture makes your homevery attractive to termites.4. Divert any water away from the foundation. This may require theinstallation of gutters with sufficient downspouts to divert water awayfrom your home.5. If your home has a crawl space, be sure that sprinklers are notspraying into the vents and keep them open and free of debris.6. Maintain a dry crawl space. Due to our climate in SouthwestGeorgia, moisture issues are common and should be evaluatedannually by a professional.

Termites serve an important role in many ecosystems. They con-sume fallen trees, limbs, and other dead plant material. However inan urban environment, they are a pest that requires control. Amature termite colony can contain over 60,000 termites and there isan average of 12 colonies per acre in our area. Combined withproper home maintenance, a liquid termiticide treatment or a baitingsystem will provide adequate protection from an infestation. Due to

the many differ-ent types of con-struction, youshould consult atrained termitetechnician todetermine whichoption best suitsyour home’sneeds.

Customers oftenask: How do Iknow if I havetermites? Beloware a few signsthat would indi-cate an infesta-tion but only a thorough inspection will truly let you know.1. Mud tubes running up the foundation of your home. Termites aresusceptible to dehydration. For that reason they build shelter tubesbetween their colony and food sources to protect them from sun-light.2. Wings on window sills. During the spring, reproductive termites“swarm” to find locations to establish new colonies. They areattracted to light so they will often times be found around windows.3. Damaged wood with galleries running along the grain of thewood.4. Small holes in sheetrock or baseboards. Termites will eat right upto the paint on sheetrock and baseboards. If you see small holes inthe paint, this could be the sign of an infestation.5. Soft spots in your floor. If termites have eaten the floor joists ofsills that hold up your home, you may feel soft spots in the floor dueto a lack of structural support.

Termites can forage up to 100 feet in all directions looking for a foodsource. If your home has not been treated, it is only a matter oftime before their next meal could be your home. If you have anyquestions regarding termites or to have your home inspected, please call us at Adams Exterminators, 229-435-6257.

(ARA) - If you're thinking about creatingor upgrading an outdoor living space, you're probably considering what mate-rials to use for your project. You'll likelyweigh concerns of cost and quality, durability and beauty before arriving ata final decision. If an outdoor shower ispart of your plan, you'll probably con-sider ceramic tile.

But many homeowners arefinding new ways to embrace ceramictile in their outdoor living spaces, choosing the time-proven material foruses that traditionally have called forwood, stone or even concrete.

"Tile can be used in a multitudeof outdoor living applications and notjust in decor," reports Patti Fasan, ceramic tile consultant for Tile of Spain, the umbrella brand representing the150-plus ceramic tile manufacturers ofSpain. "Today's tile serves practicalpurposes with its superior propertyadvantages - ideal for pools and otheroutdoor settings."

Numerous advantages drawhomeowners and designers to chooseceramic tile. You may already knowthat ceramic tile is beautiful and

durable, but it also inhibits mold, mildew and fungus - problems that canarise in a damp environment. It with-stands pool chemicals and direct sun-light without fading. It's also slip-resis-tant, making walking safer in areaswhere swimmers will be leaving a pool.

New products designed for usearound pools also mean homeownershave more design options. Floresta byTile of Spain branded manufacturerRosa Gres offers wood texturedesigned for outdoor spaces such aspool surrounds, terraces and spas.Available in six colors, the line alsooffers special trim pieces such as grat-ing that can be used over a drainagechannel.

Mosaics are always a naturalchoice for pools and hot tubs. Butdesign for these outdoor elements areno longer limited to the standard blueand white tile. Spanish manufacturerssuch as Onix are pushing the designenvelope using dynamic color, patternand texture, offering homeownersmany new choices for creating theirbackyard oasis.

Filter Floor, a raised surface

solution byNatucer, eliminatesthe need for a tra-ditional drain. Avery thin open jointallows rain waterto bypass by thetile surface, pre-venting stagnantwater or mildewproblems. Greatfor pool areas, it'salso useful on ter-races and bal-conies.Additionally,because of itsraised surface, itcan be installed over an uneven sur-face.

While ceramic tile's appeal forpool areas may be obvious, it's alsouseful in other outdoor settings such assunshades. The LifeArq Collection byNatucer produces the Bamboo line ofnarrow porcelain columns in a varietyof colors. When grouped together, thetiles can create a sunshade or otherlandscaping element. The company's

Ivy line can also be used to create apartially shaded wall or outdoor enclo-sure.

Ceramic tile has long been amaterial of choice for indoor livingspaces. Now, thanks to recent designinnovations, homeowners can embracetile's beauty and durability in a varietyof outdoor applications as well.
