2018 Parent’s Guide

If you are reading this message you are very, very lucky, indeed. For over 200 years ago my great, great, great, great grandfather, Captain Clendening, for which our cove was named, was the most feared pirate to sail the treacherous lakes of Ohio. He sailed up and down these shores until every vessel and scallywag knew the name Clendening. He pillaged and plundered every last one of those landlubbers. All was fine and nancy for Old Clendening until he received the black spot from General Von Steuben himself. You see, the good people of the cove wanted to sail freely once again so they needed the help of a savvy sea dog like Von Steuben. Captain Clendening knew that only Davy Jones locker awaited him and in preparation for his final stand, he hid all his booty and loot up on the mountain now named for Von Steuben himself.

Captain Clendening was shark bait soon after and the skull and bones have since been laid to rest. But somewhere out there his legacy is buried deep with his treasure. I want to invite you to help me find it. If you do, the rewards may surprise you and you may even learn a few tricks along the way! So mateys, are you ready to search for the buried treasure of Old Captain Clendening?

If so follow the map to the Clendening Cove at Fort Steuben Scout Reservation!

Ahoy! Welcome to Fort Steuben Scout Reservation, a camp that you may truly call yours. At Fort Steuben, we pride ourselves on creating a platform for young men to grow, learn, and experience new opportunities that they would not be able to benefit from elsewhere. We understand that every Scout is different and their interests may vary; therefore, the goal of our program design is simple: to be able to accommodate each Scout's respective personality with multiple experiences so that they may customize their own adventure.

Throughout their stay at camp, Cub Scouts will have the opportunity to earn several elective adventures. Our Cub Scout Resident Camp features six Program Areas where Scouts will learn something new while also continuing to advance in the Cub Scout program. The program areas offered are: Scout-Craft, the Waterfront, Handicraft, Sports, Nature, and the BB-gun & archery ranges.

Program Areas: Electives and Adventures

The Cub Scouts who attend F.S.S.R.'s resident camp are empowered to create their own adventure due to our open program design. Our program areas open immedi-ately after you check-in to camp, and participants are free to travel to wherever they wish and spend as much time at each area as they want! We encourage every participant to visit every program area and earn each Adventure offered for their age level, and take advantage of the fun opport-unities we have to offer in the mean time.

The Dining at the Mess Deck

Every camper will spend a significant amount of time in their campsite, or what most Scouters regard as ‘their home away from home.'

Although your quest may bring you to some of the deepest and darkest depth of the jungle, we’ll do our bestto make your stay as comfortable as possible. Each campsite comes equipped with tents, wooden floorboards, dining flys, tables, a flagpole, latrine, washstand, bulletin board, standard campsite tools, firewood and trashcans.

Campers and their parents are more than welcome to bring their own tents if they wish.

Living Quarters: The Heart of the Camp

Fort Steuben Scout Reservation provides campers with three meals a day at our Dining Hall. At the sound of the meal-time bell, the entire camp will come togetherand share in a meal, interact with our team of enthusiastic camp staff, exchange inform-ation about upcoming program features, as well as participate in songs, skits, and other programs!

Cub Scouts will be served cafeteria-style, and are asked to clean up their dishes and table setting at the conclusion of each meal.

If your Scout has special dietary needs, please fill out a dietary need form, which is located in our detailed parent's guide, before your stay at camp. Dietary needs forms may be submitted to the Ohio River Valley Council service center.
