WEATHERING THE TURBULENCEA few months ago, we kicked off the third year of our “Lunches With
Leaders” speaker series with an address by famed presidential historian
Doris Kearns Goodwin. (Scroll down to read more about this amazing
event.) I thought it was providence that Doris had come to speak to us at
this time in our history and our culture. After all, her most recent bestseller
is titled Leadership in Turbulent Times, and there have been few times in
our nation more turbulent than the ones we are all now living through.
It strikes me that as Washington implodes in dysfunction and volatile partisanship, more people are turning to
leaders in the worlds of business and philanthropy for counsel and civility. Entities such as The Business Roundtable,
comprised of national CEOs whose companies represent more than $7 trillion in annual revenues, are providing moral
and directional ballast in a time of increasing uncertainty and volatility. We have been fortunate to have enjoyed a
robust economy for the last several years, but there is still a sense that it is fragile, unsure—that at any moment wicked
winds such as those that engulfed us in 2008 could return once again, with even more cataclysmic results. I think that’s
why leadership has become such a buzzword in the cultural ether—people are hungry for strong, clear, transparent, and
forward-looking leaders to reassure them that our shared national future remains as resilient as our past. And leaders
themselves, now more than ever, are speaking about things like mission, a sense of purpose, and investing in causes
greater than one’s self or or one’s own company. Many leaders and social citizens are in pursuit of “moving mountains,”
calling for greater social good and impact.
“The key thing for a CEO to keep their head in the game is to recognize that there’s turbulent times, bad luck as well
as good luck,” Reid Hoffman, the co-founder of LinkedIn, once said. He went on to explain that during such periods
it’s important for business leaders to stay engaged with both their internal and external stakeholders, to keep people
focused, and to be a “beacon” who provides energy and order. “In other words,” he said, “it’s the same thing that
makes good leadership in any other time.”
As we head into what will surely be a challenging and tumultuous 2020, it’s important to remember that as both the
1860s and the 1960s proved, turbulent times eventually pass. The key will be to discover whose leadership weathered
them best—and what we can learn from it.

KOYA LEADERSHIP PARTNERS AND GRANT COOPER JOIN DIVERSIFIED SEARCH, WHICH FORMS THE NEW “DIVERSIFIED SEARCH GROUP”
In one of the search industry’s biggest developments this year, Diversified Search has announced that it has
formed a new umbrella entity, The Diversified Search Group, which now includes Diversified Search, BioQuest
(which Diversified Search acquired in 2016), and two new member firms, Koya Leadership Partners (which joined
Diversified Search in June) and Grant Cooper (which joined Diversified Search in July).
Now representing almost $90 million in combined annual revenues and more than 250 employees spread across
16 major cities nationwide, The Diversified Search Group creates “a new model in the industry, which is to help
clients worldwide better meet the accelerated demands for talent at the C-Suite level as they seek to meet the
business challenges brought on by a robust and expanding global economy, spurred on by rapidly changing inno-
vative and cutting-edge technologies,” Judith M. von Seldeneck, the Founder and Chair of Diversified Search, said
in a statement.
Like Diversified Search, which was founded by von Seldeneck in 1974, Boston-headquartered Koya Leadership
Partners was founded by a woman, Katie Bouton, its CEO. Considered one of the country’s leading executive
search and strategic advising firms exclusively dedicated to mission-driven search, in the past 15 years Koya has
served hundreds of clients in the nonprofit and higher education sectors, and has been ranked as one of the 50
fastest-growing women-owned businesses by both the Women Presidents’ Organization and Capital One. “We are
thrilled to join with Diversified to re-imagine the impact of a leading mission-driven executive search firm can have
on our world,” said Bouton, who in addition to retaining her role as CEO of Koya has taken on the additional role of
President of Diversified Search. “In addition to sharing a passion for client service, Diversified’s culture and values
mirror Koya’s.”
Rounding out the new Diversified Search Group, along with Diversified Search, San Francisco-based BioQuest (a
leader in life sciences executive search), and Koya, is Grant Cooper, a St. Louis-based boutique search firm focused
on the healthcare services sector, with a strong footprint in academic medicine. Established in 1957, Grant Cooper
was a pioneer in the field of executive search, and today is considered one of the most distinguished firms in the
healthcare leadership space. “We have great respect for the Diversified team and the quality of work they do,” Ed
Stout, one of Grant Cooper’s three managing partners, said of the decision to join Diversified. “This partnership

will give us even greater access to talent and broaden our geographic reach.”
A new Diversified Search Group seal is being rolled out along with some new language and branding over the next
few months as the partnership among the four firms takes firmer root in the marketplace. Von Seldeneck said the
industry should expect other firms to soon be joining the Group. “We will continue to embark on an aggressive
growth strategy to cement The Diversified Search Group as one of the leading firms in the executive search field,”
she said.
VICTOR ARIAS JOINS DIVERSIFIED SEARCH, OPENSNEW DALLAS-FORT WORTH OFFICE
Victor Arias, a leading national search executive in the area of Board
of Directors and C-Suite diversity and inclusion, has joined Diversified
Search as a Managing Director. He is working in the Board of Directors
practice and has assumed the role of Co-Practice Leader of Diversified
Search’s Consumer and Retail practice. In addition, he has recently
opened the firm’s first office in Texas, specifically the Dallas-Fort Worth
region, where he will be based.
Arias comes to Diversified Search from RSR Partners, where he had been a managing director in the board of
directors practice. Prior to his time at RSR, Arias worked at Korn Ferry, where he served as senior client partner
in the board of directors practice and global leader of the Diversity and Inclusion Initiative. Previously, he served
as a partner at Heidrick & Struggles and also at Spencer Stuart. Arias served on the board of Popeye’s Louisiana
Kitchen (NASDAQ: PLKI) for 15 years, until 2016. He is also a past president and co-founder of the National Society
of Hispanic MBAs (now Prospanica), a former member of the Notre Dame Institute of Latino Studies board, former
member of the Pepsi Advisory Board, and a founding board member of the Latino Corporate Directors Association,
a membership group of Hispanic corporate directors.
FAMED HISTORIAN, FOUR SEASONS PRESIDENT HEADLINE“LUNCHES WITH LEADERS” SERIES
The first 2019 installment of “Lunches With Leaders,” Diversified Search’s annual speaker series featuring key
thought leaders sharing their views in intimate, invitation-only lunches, kicked off in May with an appearance at
The Harvard Club in Boston by Doris Kearns Goodwin, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author and historian. Speaking
before an audience of 75 New England-area executives, the renowned presidential scholar delivered a riveting and,
at times, touching address on the meaning of the Presidency, lessons learned from our past Presidents, the state
of the country’s political landscape, and what clues history could show us about what the future holds. Afterward,
Goodwin graciously signed copies of her latest book, Leadership in Turbulent Times, provided complimentary by
Diversified Search, for the assembled guests.
On October 22nd, Christian Clerc, the President, Worldwide Hotel Operations for Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts,
addressed lunch guests at the Four Seasons Hotel in Philadelphia to speak about trends, brand management, and
disruption in the hospitality and leisure sector. The event brought out more than 125 C-Suite executives and lead-
ers from the Philadelphia region to the just-opened property, which sits atop the new Comcast Technology Center
in the heart of Philadelphia’s Center City business district.
The “Lunches With Leaders” speaker series was founded in December 2016, with a pilot lunch featuring remarks
from Stuart E. Jones, former US Ambassador to Iraq and Jordan. In the last two years the series has featured
speakers such as Rajiv Shah, the CEO of The Rockefeller Foundation; Randall Lane, the editor of Forbes magazine;
and Indra Nooyi, the Chairman and CEO of PepsiCo, among others. On November 7th Jarvis V. Hollingsworth, the
Chairman of the Texas Teachers Retirement Fund, one of the largest public pension funds in the nation, concluded
the 2019 program with remarks at The Penn Club in New York.

FROM VENICE TO PHILLY, WITH LOVE
In June, our colleagues from AltoPartners, our global alliance of search firms
currently in 57 cities in 34 countries, met in (a very hot) Venice, Italy, to dis-
cuss the year ahead and forge even stronger ties to promote and strengthen
our international search business development and execution. Among the
non-business highlights was a tour of historic St. Mark’s Square and a spirited
karaoke competition where our beloved Chair, Judee von Seldeneck, belted
out a raucous rendition of “Sweet Caroline.”
M E E T I N G S
In September, more than 70 managing directors from The Diversified Search Group
came together in Philadelphia for two days of meetings, networking, and sharing
best practices. All of us at Diversified Search, BioQuest, Koya Leadership Partners,
and Grant Cooper are so excited to be part of this new, amazing umbrella organi-
zation that is creating a new model for the search industry.
SABEENA HICKMAN
As President and CEO of the national Pool & Hot Tub Alliance, Sabeena Hickman,
whom we placed in August, oversees the world’s oldest and largest association rep-
resenting swimming pool, spa, and hot tub manufacturers, manufacturers’ agents,
builders, designers, distributors, suppliers, installers, retailers, and service techni-
cians. Based in the DC metro area, she serves as both an advocate and evangelist for
the industry and the positive social force pools, including community pools, can be
to bring people together. Here, Hickman, 48, talks about her new post, the surprising
things she’s learned, and why Santa might need a bigger sleigh this year.
OK, so we have to ask: Do people arch an eyebrow when you say you lead an organization called “The Pool and Hot Tub Alliance”?
Oh, no. The first thing they ask is, “Can you hook me up with a pool or a hot tub?” [laughs] I wish I could! When I
say I work for the pool and hot tub industry, people are naturally excited. They want to know if they can get a job
testing out pools or hot tubs for our members. I mean: Who doesn’t love a pool or a hot tub?
What do you feel is the most important part of PHTA’s mission?
Right now, the industry is going through a very exciting and unique time, in that we have had a consolidation of a
foundation and a nonprofit association to create the Pool and Hot Tub Alliance. There is a tremendous amount of
opportunity for the industry. We are focused on the integration of two strong legacy organizations and are looking
for programs that will become game-changers for the industry. We will focus on the expansion of our education
offerings, tackle workforce and labor issues, and spark discussions around a consumer campaign that speaks to
the health and lifestyle benefits of owning a pool or a hot tub.
What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about pools and hot tubs so far?
When you think of pool and hot tubs, you don’t think about everything that goes into them. We have very robust
committees that are populated with some of the most talented professionals in the field. Whether it’s water

quality, to technical standards or codes, to specifications for building and construction, or service – our volunteer
leaders are leading the charge and advocating for all businesses for our industry. The amount of research, science,
design, thought and engineering that goes into pools and hot tubs, I think people take it for granted.
Prior to this post you spent a dozen years as the CEO of the National Association of Landscape Professionals. Have you always been an outdoors kind of person?
I love the outdoors, obviously. I have worked for two outdoor associations. And I have grown to appreciate the
health benefits and positive impact that these industries bring to families and communities where we work, live,
and play.
Do you have a pool and/or a hot tub?
Not yet. My family keeps asking. It’s going to be number one on my list for Santa Claus.

BRETT MCCLUNG, PRESIDENT AND CEO,BAPTIST HEALTH
It’s hard to fathom a sector of the economy that touches more lives than healthcare. It’s
also a sector that is going through unprecedented disruption, facing challenges ranging
from aging Baby Boomers to rising costs to changing consumer demand. So when
boards of large healthcare systems find themselves in need of new leadership, they
know they have to choose cautiously and wisely, yet still find someone with the vision,
sense of purpose and service, and dedication to mission. Fortunately, Baptist Health, a
nonprofit healthcare system based in Jacksonville, Florida comprised of five hospitals
and 11,000 employees, found that person in Brett McClung, whom we placed in July.
For McClung, 51, the opportunity at Baptist Health ticked a bunch of boxes—namely, the chance to lead a faith-
based, independent, locally owned and governed health system. “The opportunity to get in front of Baptist Health
is something I will be eternally grateful for,” he says. “I believe Baptist Health was looking for me, and I was looking
for them. I truly believe that.”
“We were very clear that the successful candidate required the right credentials, who also demonstrated cultural
fit, commitment to our mission, and the right character,” says Michael Grebe, who chaired the search committee
for the Baptist Heath board. “We believed the best and brightest would seek this position, and we were right. Brett
has wasted no time in deeply engaging with the incredible team at Baptist Health. He is building on our leadership
position, and has already started to craft a new vision for the changing healthcare landscape.”
The son of a Methodist minister, McClung grew up around hospitals, visiting them with his dad in the family’s old
VW Beetle. An undergraduate healthcare internship led him on his path in hospital administration, which included
serving for more than 26 years at Texas Health Resources, one of the largest faith-based nonprofit health systems
in the nation. He believes it is hospital systems themselves that must rise to meet the challenge of fixing health-
care. “Our ability to do that will dramatically impact the number of outside entities and organizations that are
trying to fix it,” he says. “Healthcare is complex and it’s personal. And I think we are positioned to leverage this
information and use it ourselves and move forward, increasing value.”
