You are probably tired o people asking, What do you want to be when you grow

up? Some students know exactly what they want to do, but most havent got a

clue. The idea o choosing a career is intimidating, and it eels like its ar in the

uture. Theres little time in the commotion o classes, activities, sports, work, and un to

think about what career you want to pursue ater graduation rom high school or college.

It pays, though, to take the time to think about your uture career. The truth is that

youll save a lot o time and money i you have a direction in lie, as opposed to just

nishing high school and worrying about it later. Its really a matter o dollars and

sense. I you choose a career direction now, you can select classes and activities that will

make you highly marketableand highly paidwhen you look or work. And it only

makes sense to have an idea o what you want to do rather than just wandering aimlesslythrough school.

Nobody wants that. Not your parents. Not your teachers. Not your riends. They want

you to besomebody. They want you to use your talents, ollow your interests, and pursue

your ambitions to become great at what you love to

do in lie. Thats what you should want, too.

So the time is right to take charge o your lie and

think about the uture. You need a plan o action

or how to get rom where you are today to where

you want to be in a ew years: starting out on a

    personally and proessionally rewarding career.

Thats what AchieveTexas in Actionis all about. The

magazine you are holding is one o 16 guides to dierent

career clusters. It is designed to help you make smarter

decisions about your education and career options.

Youve heard the phrase, Inormation is power. Well, this magazine is power. It puts

you squarely in charge o your uture, rom creating your Texas Achievement Plan (TAP)

(see page 5) to choosing college or some other orm o education or training ater high

school. Work with your parents, teachers, and counselors to make decisions, but remind

everyone that it isyouruture at stake and thatyouare taking charge o it.

Get inormation. Get a plan. Get a clue about your career direction. Its all right i that

direction changes; choosing a direction now is better than having no direction at all. Just

promise yoursel that youll make smart choices about where to ocus your time, energy,

    and passion.

Were proud that you are taking steps to plan your career direction, and we pledge that

your school, teachers, and counselors will do all they can to help you make wise choices

on your plans or success. We wish you the best o luck on your journey.

Director o EnvireonmentalServices at Philips ServicesCorporation in Houston, the only job that I even knewabout was receptionist work. Ididnt aspire to be a manageror entrepreneur because Ireally didnt know about thosedisciplines. I was just lookingorward to graduating. That was

it. I really didnt know what it was I wanted to do.Sound amiliar? You, too, may not have a clue

about what to do with your lie.Dont worry, though. Help is right here in your

hands. This issue oAchieveTexas in Actionis yourguide to education and career choices that can

shape your uture. Its oneo 16 career cluster guidespublished by AchieveTexas,Texass college and careerinitiative (www.AchieveTexas.org). This edition is all aboutArchitecture & Construction.

Lets start with some basicsteps you should take toget organized, plan or the

uture, and start on the road to success.

    Ae Yor Talet ad Ablte

First, you need to gure out some things aboutyoursel. This step can be as simple as writing downa list o your interests (like video games or rockclimbing), your hopes and dreams (like helpingothers), your talents (like writing or math ability),and your weaknesses (i youre squeamish at thesight o blood, or example, you might not want

    to be a doctor).

Follow up on this inormal exercise by takingsome ormal assessments to determine your

    interests and abilities. Common assessments

include the Kuder (www.kuder.com), Bridges (www.

    bridges.com), Career Cruising (www.careercruising.

    com), COIN (www.coinedu.com), and Myers-Briggs

(www.myersbriggs.org) tests. These tools give most

o our students some career exploration awareness

by the time they enter eighth or ninth grade.

Ask your principal or counselor about the career

    assessments available at your school.

    Reearc Yor Career Opto

Once youve learned about yoursel, learn moreabout your career options. There are thousands

o occupations out there o which you may never

have heard, and others that do not yet exist

because the technologies have not been developed.

Fortunately, there are plenty o resources (see inside

back cover) or you, and they are as close as the

    nearest computer.

One o the most helpul is the Occupation and

    Skill Computer-Assisted Researcher (or OSCAR,

or short) rom the Texas Workorce Commission.

It is a vast database o inormation about hundreds

o proessions. You can nd OSCAR at www.ioscar.

org. Another good place to start is O*NET (www.onetcenter.org).

Gather inormation about what you can earn in

the careers in which you are interested. Find out

whether the careers you are considering have a

promising utureare they adding or losing jobs?

Check out the education youll need to enter

    those careers.

The chart on pages 1011 presents data on 25

    possible proessions. Remember, though, that

these are just a sampling o careers available in the

cluster. Go to OSCAR, O*NET, or another resource toinvestigate other careers.

    Create Your TAP

Once you have a better idea o your interests andabilities, you are ready to plan or high school andbeyond. The Texas Achievement Plan, or TAP, is yourplan or preparing or the career o your choice.

First students choose a cluster, then a particularoccupational goal. In the eighth grade a student mightchoose Construction and then later become interestedin a narrower feld such as a building inspector orConstruction Manager.

The program o study you chooseyour plan

does not stop with graduation rom high school,A student could then pursue a two-year degree as adesigner or a our-year degree as a landscape architect.

You should set up a TAP that takes you throughcareer preparation after high school, revising yourblueprint as needed as you go along. If your career plansinclude college study, ask your counselor about testsrequired for admission to college, such as the PSAT,SAT, or ACT.

    seek Out special Program

Many Texas schools oer innovative programs toprepare students or specifc career areas. Theseinclude career and technical education (CTE)programs, academies, and magnet schools. Once

youve decided on a career direction, ask yourcounselor about special programs in your area that

may provide related experiences in your chosen career.Samuel Odamah enrolled in the architecture

program at the University o Texas at Arlington, having ound his career calling at Dallass SkylineCareer Development Center, a high school with careerprograms in a number o dierent felds.

Skyline is one o the ew schools in the countrythat oer programs in architecture, Odamah says.In some careers, Skyline students could even getproessional certifcations or licenses right in highschool. It was a great place because you could fnd outwhether you really wanted to enter a career.

Odamah says that the career cluster system atSkyline taught him the value o planning or his career

and his lie. We learned about planning ahead, hesays. Those who plan things ahead o time dont haveto catch up. Its just a matter o what a person wantsout o lie. Planning gives you a betterplatorm or success.

Career Clusters& Prgrams f Study ?WHAT ARE

Acareer cluster is a group o occupations and broadindustries that share certain eatures. The Architecture& Construction cluster, or example, includes architects,

carpenters, and electricians. Texas has adopted 16 careerclusters (see back cover), the same ones designated anddeveloped by the U.S. Department o Education. As thegraphic below shows, within each cluster are programso study, which are more specic groupings o similaroccupations. Think o a program o study as being like acollege major. In Architecture & Construction, you mightchoose to ocus on Design/Pre-Construction in high schooland college.

    Related Occpato

Each program o study includes a range o relatedoccupations; interior designer is an example o an occupationthat alls within Design/Pre-Construction. Choosing acareer cluster and program o study will help you acquire theknowledge and skills youll need to enter your chosen career.

It will allow you to ollow a seamless course o study romhigh school into college or other postsecondary education ortraining. The electives you choose can complement your coreacademic classes to prepare you or the challenges o the realworld o work.

    Reew Yor TAP Eac Year

Dont get locked into a cluster and program o study you dontlike. You should reexamine your TAP at least once a year andchange clusters or programs i your interests have changed.Choosing a cluster and program o study, even i it changeslater, means that youll have a direction in lie. The idea is to

be aware o whats going on in your lie and take control oyour uture. When you know where your education is goingand why, your classes will become more meaningul. Youllmake contact with students, teachers, and employers whoshare your interest in a particular career area. Youll haveexperiences that are un and exciting. Youll be on your wayto success in school, in a career, and in lie.

    ?TAPWHAT IS AA

TAP is a Texas Achievement Plan, and its a smartidea to create one to guide your studies throughhigh school and into college or other postsecondary

education or training. Your TAP represents your chanceto take control o your education and career choices.Working with your parents/guardians and guidancecounselor, you can pick the cluster on which youwant to ocus your studies as well as your career and

postsecondary education goals. Dont worry. You arentlocked into your choices. You should revisit your TAPat least once a year to update it. You can change clusters, programs o study, and career and postsecondary goals as

your interests and ambitions change. Having a planeveni it changesis smarter than having no idea o what youwant to do and why you are attending school. Heres howto ll out your TAP.

The opportunities or employmentin Architecture & Construction arehuge, exclaims Charlene Anthony,

executive director o Houstons chaptero Associated General Contractors oAmerica. The industry is strong andpredicted to stay strong. In terms oworkorce development, Id even sayits in a crisis state because there justarent enough peopleat all levels, rom proessional all the way down tothe trades.

Look around any Texas city and youllsee what Anthony is talking about.

Oce buildings, hospitals, shoppingmalls, and other structures are sproutingup everywhere. Subdivisions consistingo everything rom condos to mansionsare spreading throughout the suburbs. The Dallas Cowboys opened a newstadium which cost $1.2 billion.

Clearly, Architecture & Constructionis a hot cluster when it comes tocareer opportunities. In act, constructionis among the top ten astest growingindustires in Texas.

    Tactle ad Aalytcal

In the building industry, it takes two typeso people to construct a structure.

People working in design and pre-constructionsuch as architects, landscapearchitects, and interior designersuse theircreativity to plan and design buildings andtheir environments.

Construction, maintenance, andoperations workers, on the other hand, aredetail-oriented people who like to work

with their hands. What brings these two types together in a

common enterprise? Both say its their loveo buildings.

The most ullling part o my job, says Russell Niemann, project manager atthe successul Houston construction rmTribble & Stephens, is being able to see theresults o your worka building. You lookup and theres this nished product.

Be aware that demand or workers and the wages paid inArchitecture & Construction are both closely linked to the Texaseconomy. While times may be good at one point, an economicdownturn can lead to layos. The way to protect yoursel is todevelop skills that make you unique in the job market.

    g Back

In Architecture & Construction, be ready or interesting workand good pay. But keep in mind, Cagle says, that you owesomething to the proession as well. Throughout history, sheobserves, buildings have always aected culture as much asthey have refected it. Architecture is as much art as it is science, and I think theres a tremendous responsibility to enhance thecommunity with artistic design.

    All-Arod good Worker

What do you need to do to take advantage o the hiring boom inArchitecture & Construction?

Its really good to have a knack or science and math, but youalso need to be procient at reading and understanding, saysarchitect Lynne Cagle, now a project coordinator o trade andindustrial education at the University o North Texas in Denton. A

successul career in construction or architecture depends on yourability to work with others, and that requires people well-inormedin all subjects who can get along with almost anyone.

A sense o history, art, and architecture history is important, says Cagle. Then theres also the marketing aspect o these careers,so a good business sense is helpul. Basically, there are a lot opeople in this eld who are good at being generalists.

Construction is a lot o teamwork, Niemann adds, so Iwould think anyone who enjoys being part o sports teams andthings o that nature would develop strong teamwork skills.Communication is the most important aspect o this eldace-to-ace contact, not just email.

    Work Wae

Salaries in both architecture and construction depend on theamount o training you have, the years o experience, and howmuch responsibility youre willing to assume. The pay inconstruction depends on your level, says Anthony. Carpenterscan make $38,000 a year. Masons might make approximately$42,000. And o course, i you get into management positions andownership, its going to be much higher. Going into a companyater a reputable our-year university as a junior project manager,

youre going to start out right out o school at about $50,000a year.

The group includesworkers with a wide variety o talentsbuildingdesign, interior design, landscape design, project management, cost estimation, roofng, plumbing, electrical work, bricklaying, heatingand air conditioning, building maintenance, and many other talents. Everyone plays a part inbringing a building project to completion.

Charlene Anthony, executive director oHoustons chapter o Associated GeneralContractors o America, notes that theteam is united by a common sense oaccomplishment. Theres a level o pride inthe industry, driving around your communityand knowing youve helped build it, she

observes. Thats the resounding thing I hear, whether its building a place o worship orhomes or shopping centerstheres a senseo satisaction in having helped build yourcommunity.

    Desig ad Plaig

Building projects usually start with anarchitect and project planners.

Architecture is a lot more complex thanmost people believe. Its not just putting lineson paper, notes architect Lynne Cagle, nowa project coordinator or trade and industrialeducation at the University o North Texas inDenton. Its the ability to translate what thoselines will look like once a building is built.Architects envision what no one else has seen. This is the largest orm o visual arts.

But architecture is not just about art, shesquick to explain. Its also about unction.

Designers must understand structuralengineering, electrical engineering, and everyother aspect o what goes into a building.

It gets quite involved, Cagle notes.Designing systems gets pretty sophisticated, especially in commercial buildings.

Planning and design is not just aboutputting up single structures, either. Architectswho go into urban planning think evenbiggerthey plan communities, roadways, landscaping, and more. They have to decide

where to build the schools, the gas stations, the parks, right down to the municipal

parking lots, Cagle explains. The decisions that take place inside

buildings can be just as complicated andimportant as those made on the largerscale. Interior designers make critical

judgements that aect the unction andenvironment o rooms in residential homesas well as in commercial structures. Theycreate foorplans, oten with computer-aided drating sotware, and choose paint, wallpaper, fooring, urnishings, and otherelements o interior decor. They work withspaces ranging rom cozy breakast nooks

in suburban cottages to the broad expanseo oce cubicles lling entire foors ocommercial skyscrapers.

    Cotrcto

Once interior and external plans are created, they are turned over to a team o contractorsand cratspeople who handle the construction.

    Theres something wonderully rewarding

about watching something evolve roma drawing, Cagle says. Specialists in the

construction trades do raming, painting, masonry, fooring, electrical wiring, cabinetmaking, heating and air conditioning work, glazing (installing windows), and more.

Almost every member o the constructionteam must be up on the latest technology,Anthony stresses. Technology has certainlyacilitated the orward momentum as ar ascommunications in the world o design go,she says. The use o sotware applications isabsolutely crucial.

O course, there are the more nuts and bolts

aspects o construction, which dont depend

on technology but are every bit as crucial. Theability to read a drawing and translate it is

important, says Cagle. In general, someone

who builds things wants to measure twice and

cut once. That kind o attention to detail is

essential in construction jobs. Some construction proessionals, such

as those who do skilled masonry work, arehighly skil led artists, Cagle notes. You

can really tell a building that has been puttogether by a cratsman as opposedto someone who has no vestedinterest in the outcome.

Mateace/OperatoOnce buildings are nished, they requireanother team o people to operate andmaintain them. These workers clean, repair, upgrade, and service every cornero a structure. They work as painters;groundskeepers; landscapers; rooers;heating, ventilation, and air conditioningexperts; and rerigeration mechanics.Cagle notes, I you have a broken window,no one is more important to you thana glazier.

No matter what your academic aptitude, there is likely to be a place or you inArchitecture & Construction. The mostimportant requirements or success, saysAnthony, are dedication, maturity, loyalty, clear-mindedness, and awillingness to learn.

At rst glance, preparing or careers inArchitecture & Construction might seemlike a matter o picking a specialty within

the clustercarpentry, masonry, electricalwork, dratingand ocusing on the specialtywith single-minded precision.

Even i you know where your career is headed, its important to take a variety o courses inhigh school. Thats because Architecture &Construction is a generalists feld involvingteamwork and interaction with all sorts opeople. Although you can take specializedcourses in specifc skills such as drating, dontthink your academic classes arent important.

    Commcato i Crtcal

Those who want to work in Architecture &Construction need to be able to communicatewith all dierent types o people, includingcontractors, clients, laborers, inspectors,

and designers. That means having a strongoundation in English

    reading, writing,speaking, and

    listeningisessential.

You have to demonstrate goodcommunication skills to be taken seriously, says Toby Velasquez, general manager oPooldeck Construction in Dallas. I yourecompeting with someone else or a job, hesays, the person who is better at writing andspeaking will oten be selected.

Speaking a oreign language is also a plus inthis cluster. Velasquez speaks our languages(Spanish, Italian, and Japanese in addition toEnglish) and says, Ive used all o them on the

job at one time or another.

    Mater scece ad Mat

Architecture & Construction also requiresstrong math and science skills. Understandingthe physics o how a building is built andknowing the algebra and geometry used or thethousands o specifcations and measurementsthat go into a complex building helps you get

ahead in the construction business.I would recommend taking rigorous math

as well as art courses, says Mary Crites, anarchitect and principal in the Lubbock oceo Parkhill, Smith, and Cooper, Engineers,Architects, and Planners. Im a rm believerthat, or an architect, the art side can belearned. It does not have to be an innateability. You have to be good with computersand math as well as have an eye or design.

    Coo Career Electe

Your electives oer the opportunityto ocus your studies on one o the threeprograms o study in Architecture &Construction. These classes will dieraccording to the program (see ProgramProfles, page 12) you choose.

Construction career electives includeElectrical Trades, Bricklaying, Plumbing,Welding, and Stone Masonry.

Electives in the Design & Pre-Constructionprogram o study include Drating, InteriorDesign, and Landscaping.

Students in the Maintenance/Operationsprogram can take classes such as HomeMaintenance and Improvement, and BuildingMaintenance.

    Pre skll Certfcato

Classroom instruction in particular constructiontrades is sometimes paired with work-basedlearning opportunities that can help studentswork toward certifcation in particular skills.

Organizations such as the National Centeror Construction Education and Research(NCCER) and the National Occupational

Competency Testing Institute conductcertication testing. The NCCER maintains anational registry (www.nccer.org/credentials/nationalregistry.asp) o student transcriptsand certicates o completion that can bereerenced by potential employers whenstudents enter the workorce.

    Try a Lttle o Eeryt

Educators encourage students interested inArchitecture & Construction to take a ewcourses in each o the three programs ostudy in the cluster. Even i you never pick upa hammer or saw, you need to know how abuilding is put together.

Architecture & Construction classes maylead you in a direction you never imagined.Historic preservation, or example, is a hoteld as communities seek to reurbish olderstructures. Another growing area is greenconstruction, which takes environmental

actors, such as energy consumption andpollution, into account as new residentialor commercial developments are planned, built, and maintained.

In the summer o 2004, Pilot PointHigh School student Kate Ticknerentered Huckabee University, a high

school internship program sponsoredby the Fort Worth architecture frmHuckabee, Inc.

The nine students at HuckabeeUniversity (now called NextGeneration Design Institute) ormedthree teams o three in a week-longcompetition or scholarship money.

Our project was to design a high-end, multiuse retail/housing, restaurant/park development along the coastline atGalveston, Tickner recalls. We had toully develop a typical housing unit and

then design the retail, restaurant, andpark amenities.Tickners team won the competition.

Now an architecture student at DruryUniversity in Springfeld, Missouri,Tickner continues to intern in thesummer at Huckabee. The week I spentat Huckabee really changed my plansor the uture. It helped me see thatarchitecture was defnitely the route Iwanted to ollow through college.

    shadowng and Mentorng

Out-o-classroom learning, orextended learning, as its alsocalled, puts you in the ofces andconstruction sites where buildings are

planned and constructed. It takes a number o dierent orms.Job shadowing involves going to theworkplace and ollowing a proessionalthrough the activities o his or her day. Many businesses around the countryparticipate in February o each year inNational Groundhog Job Shadow Day,but you can set up job shadows at anytime o the year.

Job shadowing can lead tomentoring relationships withproessionals in your chosen career.Mentors take students under their wing

and advise them on career preparation, academic performance, and even howto prepare for a job interview.

Tosh Chachere, a student inCentral High School in Beaumont, met mentor Chuck Mason, who runsa amily-owned construction frm, while serving as a counselor at theRotary Youth Leadership Awards(RYLA), a camp sponsored by Rotary

    International to teach studentsleadership skills.

Mr. Mason showed a personalinterest in me and my uture, saysChachere. He regularly checked up

on my progress and helped me outfnancially when I went o to college.

Paid or unpaid internships can helpyou land a job by giving you the chanceto show potential employers what youcan do. Gary Lopez, who works inhuman resources with SHW Group,an architectural frm with our ofcesin Texas, says internships provided orhigh school students rom the Irvingand Carrollton independent schooldistricts have helped him fnd some o

his best hires.Applying or the internship

includes an interview process,Lopez says, so some students gainexperience interviewing. Some o ourbest interns tell their riends aboutthe frm. Its a high achievers network. When students are good, we makethem a job oer once theycomplete college.

    Appretcep

Apprenticeship training is a commonentryway into careers in construction.Participants earn certicates in skills such ascarpentry, masonry, and electrical work.

Gary Strouz, training director o the ElectricalApprenticeship Training Program in Houston, says his program combines on-the-job training

and classroom studies to produce top-notchelectricians. Contractors generally pair up one

    journeyman electrician witheach apprentice.

Strouz says there are similarprograms in the Houstonarea or plumbers, pipetters,

carpenters, insulators, heavy machineoperators, bricklayers, and paintersanycrat thats on a construction site.

Though there are training programs orstudents still in high school, Strouzs programrequires a high school diploma, as well as prooo a passing grade in high school algebra. Youhave to do mathematical calculations to do

electrical work correctly, he says. We holdthe students to a high level.

A career portolio is not simplya resume, although it can certainly

include one. So what should go in acareer portolio? A variety o things, depending on your own personalexperiences. It could include transcriptand grades; writing samples; letterso recommendation rom teachers, mentors, or employers; awards youvereceived; and items that documentother activities, such as internships and

job shadowing experiences. You need to be specicdates, how

many years, any awards, what theymeant, and who you received themrom, says Grace Brauchle, who helps

students put their portolios togetheras the career center coordinator orLehman High School in Kyle.

Brauchle says portolios come inhandy when students apply or jobs oradmission to college. First impressionsare a very big thing, she says, and

you want to be the one whose papersget passed around the oce. You wantto be the one where the admissionscounselors say, Wow, look at this one!

And a portolio doesnt have to besimply a collection o papers. Artistsand photographers use their portoliosto provide visual examples o theirwork, and so can you. Do you havephotos o someone giving you anaward? Put them in. How about a videoo a perormance? Include it on a DVD.Do you have experience in Web design?Make an online portolio to showcasewhat you can do.

Iwas not a disciplined student in highschool, admits Samuel Odamah, who attended Dallas Skyline Career

Development Center in Dallas, and evennow, as an architecture student at the

University o Texas in Arlington, I strugglewith that a bit. In college, Ive learnedrom other students that those who preparewell ahead o time and are very organizeddo better.

Whether, like Odamah, youre aimingor a career in architecture or planning towork in a skilled construction trade, itsimportant to start early, get organized, andcreate a blueprint or your uture ater highschool. Here are some options.

    Appretcep

    Typically, says Kevin Alter, associate

proessor o architecture at the University oTexas at Austin, people in construction jobslearn rom working apprenticeships. TheApprenticeship and Training Association oTexas, headquartered in Houston, includesapprentice training programs in all majorconstruction trades, including bricklayers, carpenters, cement masons, electricians,

    ironworkers, pipetters, plumbers,and others.

Programs range rom three to veyears in length and combine classroomtrainingusually one or two nights a

weekwith ull-time employment andon-the-job training working directly withskilled cratspeople. At the end o theprogram, trainees are prepared to takelicensing exams or state certication.

Gary Strouz, training director withthe Electrical Apprenticeship TrainingProgram in Houston, stresses the benetso working while undergoing training.Trainees have medical insurance and geta $2-an-hour raise every year, guaranteedin writing i they meet their obligations,he says.

Trainees in some programs are eligible

or postsecondary credit rom the HoustonCommunity College System toward collegecerticates or associates degrees.

    Teccal Collee

Community colleges and the TexasState Technical College System (TSTC)provide a variety o attractive options orstudents pursuing careers in Architecture& Construction.

Tech Prep, or example, sets up six-yearcareer and technical education programsbeginning the rst year o high schooland continuing through two years at a

community college. A typical Tech Prepprogram in south Texas links high schoolstudies in the United Independent School

    or-Year uerte

Texas has several universities with well-respected programs in architecture.

Whether you enroll in architecture oranother popular major such as constructionmanagement depends on your career goals. The architecture curriculum is ocused on

exploring the creative mind and seekinginnovative solutions to problems, whereasconstruction management tends to bemore about the nuts and bolts o buildings.Educators say the two disciplines areequally challenging.

Joe Surber, a construction science majorat Texas A&M University, points out thatsome o the high school classes that havehelped him most in his college program arephysics, statistics, and English. What wouldhe have studied harder in high school?I wouldve put more eort into calculusand physics, he says. A lot o the math-based classes in my major build o thoseacademic courses.

According to Audrey Maxwell, projectdesigner at WKMC Architects in Dallas,

you can get either a bachelors degree inarchitecture in ve years or a mastersdegree in six years. Then students takean apprenticeship or internship orapproximately 5,600 hours beore takingthe nine-part Architect RegistrationExamination in order to be ully qualiedto practice. People typically take this examby divisions and can retake segments until

they pass all components. Its important to thoroughly researcheach architecture school and particularprogram beore you apply. Amonguniversity architecture programs, Alternotes that there are two dierent teachingapproaches.

There are more technical programsthat are oriented to the practical aspects obuilding and there are other programs thattake a more artistic approach, he says.

Additionally, its helpul to amiliarizeyoursel with the teaching styles at yourschool choices. Alter explains, More than

any other major, architecture is one-on-one education. Studio courses are usually15 students to one teacher. And there arepublic critiques, which vary rom school toschool. Some are more aggressive and someare more supportive. So its a good idea tovisit a class.
