The sponsorship facilitated the Congress’ in-focus session on micro finance and social entrepreneurship, a perfect fit for Alterna to solidify our commitment to promoting women’s equality in Canada and around the world. Corporate donations are great – we all like to work for an organization that cares about the world around us – but when an organization’s employees get involved, it adds another level of caring. In 2011, Alterna employees raised $94,450 and spent their own time volunteering to help others. Our employees are the heart and soul of the organization, as well as the communities they live and work in. Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Support Programs $31,910 Candlelighters mission is to enrich the lives of children and their families coping with childhood cancer, as well as promote awareness and understanding of the impact of childhood cancer on children and their families. United Way $35,935 The United Way provides our staff an easy way to contribute and give back to our communities, through payroll deductions and internal fundraising campaigns like chilli cook-offs, bake sales, “Dressed like this” jeans days, and more. We raised almost $36,000 in 2011 to help the United Way and the people that rely on their services and programs. On Co-Op™, The Ontario Co-operative Association, Co-operative Young Leaders Program Co-operative Young Leaders (CYL) Camp is something you see featured regularly in Alterna’s written reports and newsletters. That’s because we’re proud to be a sponsor of this annual event, and to help give aspiring young leaders a foothold in cooperative business practices and principles, while having the chance to be young and have fun.

The West End Food Co-op (WEFC)

The West End Food Co-op (WEFC), is working to create a thriving local food culture in Toronto’s West End that has a positive impact on the economy, environment and society, and promotes a connection to a sustainable global food system.

WEFC members include eaters, workers, farmers and community organizations. Right now, the WEFC is in the process of opening a central food hub in Toronto’s Parkdale neighbourhood that will include a small, full-service grocery store featuring members’ locally-grown products, as well as other fresh and healthy local foods. It will also house a community kitchen where affordable, healthy meals are the catch of the day, with a side of food education and a sprinkling of value-added products from local members’ wares.

For more information about the co-ops we work with and support, visit alterna.ca

“I would like to thank you for sponsoring me to go to CYL

this summer. It was one of the most enriching experiences

of my life. I learned so many leadership skills, and my

knowledge on cooperatives has skyrocketed

. I was amazed

with how much I learned and am so impressed by how

valuable the CYL camp truly is.”

- Vernon Ford

2012 has been designated by the United Nations as the International Year of the Cooperative. As your financial cooperative, Alterna’s pleased to support other co-ops and help build a better world.

Here are just a few of the Ontario cooperatives we had the pleasure of working with in 2011. For full details on our cooperative partner organizations and community investments,

visit alterna.ca.

Canadian Co-operative Association, Women’s Mentorship Program Fourteen women from six countries in Africa and Asia arrived in Ottawa last June to participate in the Canadian Co-operative Association’s Women’s Mentorship Program. This annual event is an outstanding training and learning opportunity for female credit union managers from developing countries. Alterna Savings was pleased to host a credit union representative from Uganda, Juliet Kyosimiire. This unique experience provided an opportunity to share credit union practices and gain valuable insight into the inner workings of credit unions around the world for both Juliet and our St. Laurent branch staff.

Co-operative Housing Federation of Toronto The Co-operative Housing Federation of Toronto (CHFT) is a member-supported organization representing more than 45,000 people living in more than 160 non-profit housing co-operatives located in Toronto and York Region. Because we strongly believe that everyone deserves a chance, Alterna Savings supports the CHFT’s Diversity Scholarship Awards,

Peel Halton Scholarship fund, and the Here to Stay programs.
