PRELUDE

“Come, Behold the Wondrous Mystery”

Come, behold the wondrous mystery in the dawning of the King. He, the theme of heaven’s praises,

robed in frail humanity. In our longing, in our darkness, now the light of life has come. Look to

Christ who condescended, took on " esh to ransom us. Come, behold the wondrous mystery, he the

perfect Son of Man. In his living, in his su# ering, never trace, nor stain of sin. See the true and better

Adam, come to save the hell-bound man. Christ, the great and sure ful! llment of the law, in him we

stand. Come, behold the wondrous mystery, Christ the Lord upon the tree. In the stead of ruined

sinners hangs the Lamb in victory. See the price of our redemption, see the Father’s plan unfold.

Bringing many sons to glory; grace unmeasured, love untold. Come, behold the wondrous mystery,

slain by death, the God of life. But no grave could e’er restrain him. Praise the Lord, he is alive! What

a foretaste of deliverance, how unwavering our hope. Christ, in power resurrected as we will be

when he comes.Words and Music by Matt Boswell, Matt Papa, Michael Bleecker.

CALL TO WORSHIP • Psalm 92:1-8

It is good to praise you, O LORD, and to make music to your name, O Most High; to proclaim your love

in the morning and your faithfulness at night, to the music of the ten-stringed lyre and the melody of

the harp. For you make us glad by your deeds, O LORD; we sing for joy at the works of your hands. How

great are your works, O LORD, how profound your thoughts! The senseless man does not know, fools

do not understand, that though the wicked spring up like grass and all evildoers " ourish, they will be

forever destroyed. But you, O LORD, are exalted forever.

SONGS OF PRAISE

“How Great is our God”

The splendor of the King, clothed in majesty,

Let all the earth rejoice, all the earth rejoice.

He wraps himself in light, and darkness tries to hide,

And trembles at his voice, and trembles at his voice.

How great is our God, sing with me, how great is our God.

And all will see how great, how great is our God.

And age to age he stands, and time is in his hands,

Beginning and the End, Beginning and the End.

The Godhead three in one: Father, Spirit, Son,

The Lion and the Lamb, the Lion and the Lamb.

How great is our God, sing with me, how great is our God.

And all will see how great, how great is our God.

Name above all names, worthy of all praise,

My heart will sing, how great is our God.

How great is our God, sing with me, how great is our God.

And all will see how great, how great is our God.

How great is our God, sing with me, how great is our God.

And all will see how great, how great is our God.

Words and Music by Chris Tomlin, Jesse Reeves, and Ed Cash.

“Jesus, Lover of My Soul”

Jesus, lover of my soul, let me to thy bosom " y,

While the nearer waters roll, while the tempest still is high.

Hide me, O my Savior, hide, ‘til life’s storm is past;

Safe into the haven guide; receive my soul at last.

3

Other refuge have I none, hangs my helpless soul on thee;

Leave, oh leave me not alone, still support and comfort me.

All my trust on thee is stayed, help from thee I bring;

Cover my defenseless head in the shadow of thy wing.

Thou, O Christ, are all I want, more than all in thee I ! nd;

Raise the fallen, cheer the faint, heal the sick, and lead the blind.

Just and holy is thy Name, I am all unrighteousness;

False and full of sin I am; thou art full of truth and grace.

Plenteous grace with thee is found, grace to cover all my sin;

Let the healing streams abound; make and keep me pure within.

Thou of life the fountain art, let me take of thee;

Spring thou up within my heart; for all eternity.

“My Jesus Has Done All Things Well”

O for a heart prepared to sing to God,

My Savior and my King;

While with his saints I join to tell,

“My Jesus has done all things well.”

How sovereign, wonderful, and free

Is all his love to sinful me!

He plucked me as a brand from hell;

My Jesus has done all things well.

And since my soul has known his love,

What mercies has he made me prove;

Mercies which all my praise excel;

My Jesus has done all things well.

And when to that bright world I rise,

And join the anthems in the skies,

Among the rest this note shall swell,

My Jesus has done all things well.Words by Samuel Medley. Music by Je# Koontz.

CORPORATE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Heavenly Father, we admire your loving heart,

adore your wisdom, stand in awe of your power.

It is the discovery of your goodness alone

that can banish our fears,

allure us into your presence,

and help us to grieve and confess our sins.

When we review our past guilt

we are conscious of our present unworthiness:

when we have condemned your goodness,

de! ed your power, trampled upon your love,

and rendered ourselves worthy of eternal death.

We acknowledge that our recovery cannot spring from any cause in us.

But you have laid help on One who is mighty,

for there is mercy with you,

and exceeding riches in your kindness through Jesus.

May we always feel our need of him.

Let your restored joy be our strength.

May that joy keep us from lusting after the world,

bear us up in loss of comforts,

work in us the image of the heavenly,

and lead us to delight in being your children.

In the name of Jesus we pray. AmenAdapted from The Valley of Vision: “Kept by God.”

SILENT CONFESSION

ASSURANCE OF PARDON • Ephesian 2:1-9

Brothers and sisters in Christ, we were dead in our transgressions and sins, in which we used to live

when we followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom. All of us lived among them,

gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we

were by nature objects of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made

us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace we have been saved.

And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in

order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his

kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace we have been saved, through faith—and this not from

ourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that none of us can boast.

SCRIPTURE READING • Matthew 24:1-14 (Pew Bible, page 829)

Jesus left the temple and was going away, when his disciples came to point out to him the buildings

of the temple. 2 But he answered them, “You see all these, do you not? Truly, I say to you, there will

not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.”

3 As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will

these things be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” 4 And Jesus

answered them, “See that no one leads you astray. 5 For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am

the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray. 6 And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that

you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet. 7 For nation will rise against

nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are but the beginning of the birth pains.

9 “Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and put you to death, and you will be hated by all

nations for my name’s sake. 10 And then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one

another. 11 And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. 12 And because lawlessness will

be increased, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But the one who endures to the end will be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to

all nations, and then the end will come.

SERMON • “Advance Through Storm” Rev. Brad Allison

Historian Kenneth Scott Latourette has written a multi-volume history of the Church titled Advance

Through Storm. The same title could aptly be at the head of Matthew 24, a chapter in which Jesus speaks

of the future. This long discourse comes in response to a question his disciples asked him concerning

the timing of the destruction of the temple. They assumed that this would come at the end of the world,

and they want to know when that will be. Jesus never answers their question about the time of his

second coming and the end of the world in its current form. What he does tell them is the character of

this age in which they will live until he comes. One is struck by all the bad things Jesus says will happen

in this age before his return. Yet, the passage is ! lled with hope.

I. Bad Things Will Happen, But… – vs. 1-2

II. Bad Things Will Happen, But Don’t Be Afraid – vs. 3-8

III. Bad Things Will Happen, But It Will End Well – vs. 9-14

GIVING OF TITHES AND OFFERINGS

“The Christian’s Hope Can Never Fail”

We travel through a barren land with dangers thick on every hand; but Jesus guides us through

the vale; O, the Christian’s hope can never fail. Huge sorrows meet us as we go and devils aim to

overthrow; but vile infernals can’t prevail; O, the Christian’s hope shall never fail. Sometimes we’re

tempted to despair, but Jesus makes us then his care; though numerous foes our souls assail; O, the

Christian’s hope can never fail. We trust upon the sacred word, the oath and promise of the Lord; and

safely through each tempest sail; O, the Christian’s hope can never fail.Words: Author Unknown. Music by Benj Pocta.
