At this moment in history preservation of this rich and exceptional cul-ture is of utmost importance, as it is in real danger of being lost.
The Shang Shung Institute was founded in Italy in 1989 by Chög-yal Namkhai Norbu, and inaugurated in 1990 by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama.
Other branches of the SSI have since been established in North America, Austria, UK, Russia, and Argentina which work to-gether as one promoting all initiatives to this end.
The SSI develops and supports projects in various countries including: translation, publication, and archiving of Tibetan texts; organisation and presentation of international cultural and edu-cational events to share and preserve the Tibetan heritage, and formal courses of study in the Tibetan arts and sciences.

The founder and guide of the Dzogchen Community is Chögyal Namkhai Norbu, who has lived in the West since 1960, when he came to Italy at the invitation of Professor Giuseppe Tucci, as a staff member of the Institute for Middle & Far Eastern Studies of Rome (today ISIAO).He was Professor of Tibetan and Mongolian Language and Literature from 1964 to 1992 at the Oriental Institute of the University of Naples. A leading authority on Tibetan civiliza-tion, particularly expert in the fields of history, literature, and medical and astrological science, Chögyal Namkhai Norbu is widely known for his activities on behalf of the culture and people of Tibet.
At his birth, in 1938 at Dege (Eastern Tibet), Chögyal Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche was recognized as the reincarnation of the great Dzogchen master Adzom Drugpa (1842-1934), and when he was five years old he was further recognized by the XVIth Karmapa as the mind emanation of Drug Shabdrung Rinpoche, a prior reincarnation of the master Padma Karpo.Chögyal Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche studied with some of the most important masters of his time and completed his training in both the Sutras and the Tantras, as required by the Buddhist tradition. At the age of sixteen, he met his root-master Rigdzin Changchub Dorje, who introduced him to the authentic knowl-edge of Dzogchen.
The Hellenic Dzogchen Community is a cultural non-profit organization representing the local community of students and practitioners in Greece. The seat of the Hellenic Dzogchen Community is located in Athens, yet the Sangha is comprised by practitioners from all over the country, regardless of their nation-ality. Together we practice and work to realize and preserve the Dzogchen teachings for the benefit of all beings.
As an organization, the Hellenic Dzogchen Community is an indepented, self-reliant and self-efficient entity. Yet, in all es-sential community matters, we are working closely and in direct collaboration both with the International Gakyil of the Dzogchen Community and with Merigar East, our regional Gar.
The Hellenic Dzogchen Community is committed to the preser-vation of the precious Dzogchen teachings, which were passed on through an unbroken, direct lineage to Chögyal Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche, and through him have been trasmitted to us, too. As the local Dzogchen Sangha, we practice together at minimum four times per month, at the full and new moons, and on the special days of each month called Guru Rinpoche Day and Dakini Day. In addition, we often get together for special practice weekends and retreats as well.
In order to create auspicious circumstances that can favour further study and practice, the Hellenic Dzogchen Community aims to develop a study and retreat place (Ling) in the country-side. This place is situated on the slopes of Arcadia in southern Greece and, recently, Chögyal Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche named it “Garabling”, that is: Place of Joy and Delight.
