Conference 1999 ..• and 2000

The 1999 Conference was over-subscribed and we have received positive feedback from delegates returning evaluation forms.

Dear Smile

~ excellent conference''

"Thank you for a good conference"

"The Whole Class Projects contain really nice ideas to make mixed ability teaching possible with the whole class"

My first SMILE conference and maths teachers from different schools were greeting each other as old friends or being introduced to new ones as we all helped ourselves to generous portion of breakfast. I opened the pack I had been given at reception and found a badge - a proper metal one of the kind you get on birthday cards telling your age - with my name on and a large question mark. Hmmmm. Looking around I noticed others with name badges but with different designs: dice, a geometric pattern, a magician's topper and wand and yes, there was another question mark. Could the symbols on the badges be linked to the various workshops to which we had been assigned? Further peering at badges and hastily exchanged words with the wearers convinced me that they were. I was down for the Problem Solving, and rather thought that I'd just cracked the first one.

Conference began with a useful opening talk, The Mathematics Curriculum in 2000. Then just time to sign up for our choice of afternoon workshop. Making decisions was never my forte, so I signed up for the most intriguing option, Amnesty International: Bringing Human Rights into the Maths Classroom. lt was an interesting session. We took part in an activity which compared different voting systems and came away with a variety of ideas to try out.

The Shape and Space workshop caught my attention immediately with its pop-up tetrahedron, octahedron and dodecahedron, but how I struggled to make one of my own. I would be very cautious, or much more practised, before introducing this entertaining idea into the classroom. Entertaining aptly describes the contribution by Mike Askew. He had us rolling in the aisles whilst subliminally assailing us with many thought-provoking questions about the meaning of Numeracy and how children interpret - and misinterpret - what they are taught.

Editing 1999/2000

The trialling of individualised materials this year will have a two-pronged approach:

Editing Group will meet on:

Thursday 7th October 1999 Friday 19th November 1999 Monday 7th February 2000 Tuesday 28th March 2000

Postal Editing will also take place for those departments who would like to be involved with the trialling process but are unable to attend the Editing Group meetings. A member of the SMILE team will try to visit these schools to discuss feedback.

Please contact the SMILE Centre by Friday 17th September if you are interested in trialling SMILE materials - either as a member of the Editing group or as part of the postal editing.

Network Changes

Errors on the 1999 SMILE Network/Activity List 2365 Higher Decimal Win - level 5 Decimals is wrongly numbered on the Network as SMILE 2356

2380 Numberlines (MICRO) Is recorded as Estimation level 4 on the Activity List, and Addition level 3 on the Network - it should be under Ratio level 4.

2381 NumberlinesD (MICRO) Is recorded as Estimation level 6 on the Activity list, it is actually Ratio level 6.

2376 Maths In Your Head (Teacher) is wrongly described as "Reckonings 2" on the Activity List

Suggested Change to the SMILE Network 2000

SMILE 1826 y = mx (Micro+) At present on level?, but should move to levelS, before SMILE 0430 Parallel Lines

Page5

New software • Graphing

The latest SMILE software to run under Windows is Graphing - available this term on CD. Graphing contains two resource programs from the original series, Plotter and Regions.

These focus on linear equations and inequalities allowing students to create lines either by entering the equation of the line, or by identifying two points. Within the resource programs there is the facility to change axis and scales and the resultant lines can be translated or rotated.

Within Plotter, there are five activities which cover the ideas of the Micro+ activities already on the SMILE network, and there will be additional activities which can be printed directly from the software.

Page6

Regions focuses on inequalities, has the flexibility of Plotter, but it also has .. . Foxes and Chickens

The cost of Graphing will be £40 for a single user licence, £80 for 2 - 15, £120 for 16- 50 and £160 for 50+

As mentioned in June's Splash, it was originally intended to include Quad, but in the development of the software, many questions were raised about how far Quad should go?

• Should Quad just stick to quadratic graphs? Students who are working at Level 8 and above will need to explore higher powers of graphs.

• What transformations should be explored? Should the program deal with all possible translations and reflections? Where do you stop? Do SMILE teachers need Quad as a GCSE resource, or as an A level resource?

• The old version of Quad did not have the facility to explore linear equations. The new Windows version could.

• Is there already commercial software which satsifactorily covers the ground that Quad would?

If you have comments on any of the above, please contact the SMILE Centre.

Whole Class Mathematics Projects The development work for the eight projects has now finished and teachers who have trialled them have found that their students have been highly motivated and challenged by them. The projects provide an excellent opportunity for discussion as well as some brilliant display material. The main hall at the SMILE Conference was totally decorated with display work from the projects, the logo for the project provided the SMILE Conference badges and six of the projects were used as the basis of workshops.

0-Fractals

• - Quadrilaterals and Triangles

c:D- Problem Solving

The other two projects,

• -TV survey and

Each project has:

(i)- Mathemagic

0- Modular Codes

- Fair and Unfair

e- Mappings are also included.

• Clearly identified subject content and range of levels

• Activities to provide differentiation

• Lesson description

• Lesson plans

• Assessment Sheets and Answers where needed

• ICT integrated

• Website addresses and bibliography for additional work

These projects will be available in the autumn term.

SMILE Forum Weekend To ensure that SMILE schools have the opportunity to participate in the decisionmaking process of the SMILE Mathematics project a Residential Forum has been arranged on:

Friday 12th November - Sunday 14th November

The agenda for the weekend will be structured to allow for discussion on:

The SMILE Network The Generation of New materials and "Editing" SMILE Conference - 2000 and beyond Ordering SMILE cards

There will be no cost for the weekend which is open to any SMILE teacher. However places are limited to 20 so if you wish to attend please fill in the application form on the next page in plenty of time.

Whether or not anyone from your department is able to attend we would really welcome your views. Please raise the issues below at a future department meeting - and send us the minutes!

1. Do you feel that there is too much material on the SMILE Network?

2. Do you want to see new materials developed for individualised learning? If so do you have any comments or possible improvements on that new activities for the SMILE Network are trialled and developed (currently by the Editing Group).

3. Do you want future SMILE conferences to be residential or one-day events? Are you prepared to offer workshops etc, for future SMILE Conferences?

4. Are you happy for certain SMILE cards to be sold in groups? If so, how would you be happy to purchase? By

... Attainment Target and level e.g. purchasing AT 4 level 5?

... type of card - e.g. purchasing a pack of all the investigative material?

... other?

Dear Splash Dear Splash

Mathematics teaching at Tamarside, like that in many other Plymouth schools has been based around the SMP 11 to 16 scheme for many years. These resources, particularly those for year 7 and 8 have become rather 'tired', and many of the successful booklets are no longer in print. Consequently in order to investigate available schemes for year 7 (in the first instance) staff went to visit local departments. SMILE resources were included in our research. After considering the merits of each scheme the faculty decided to adopt SMILE in order to continue our commitment to resource-based learning. Factors influencing our decision included the SMILE record keeping system and National Curriculum links. These allow staff to set targets for individual students. We have been particularly impressed with the variety of resources and the support provided by the SMILE Centre.

Andy Reeve

Tamarside Community College

Dear Splash

We write to register our deep concern over the proposal to discontinue the ability to purchase SMILE activities individually.

All Maths departments and teachers have a set of activities that they use much more than others, which therefore need replacing more frequently. With increasingly limited budgets, they simply cannot afford to waste any of their spending by being compelled to purchase equal numbers of activities they would not normally order or use.

This decision will therefore further increase the pressure on SMILE departments. The result will either be fewer schools using SMILE as it becomes less economically viable, or schools will have to photocopy more in order to replace their stock. In any event this would mean lost revenue to SMILE mathematics.

This would also work against schools - both "SMILE" and "non-SMILE" who wished to use the resources more flexibly: e.g. to offer a module on, say, area covering 3 NC levels, or teaching a whole class lesson using just one activity. Resourcing such a use of the materials under the proposed scheme would be prohibitively expensive.

A major strength of the SMILE structure and materials is that they allow teachers the flexibility to select individual routes of activities for each student. This is what marks SMILE as different from other individualised schemes such as SMP, and is the basis for the commitment of so many teachers and departments. Given a commitment to using SMILE in this way it would be strange to suggest that ruwru numbers of each activity would be required!

Page12

Whilst we realise that having a large number of activities available for purchase separately contributes much to storage and packing costs, we feel that other possibilities must be considered before any radical steps are taken.

Yours faithfully

Graveney School Maths Department.

Note from the Coordinator

Many thanks to departments whose comments regarding the availability of individual SMILE cards from April 2000 will contribute to the agenda for the Maths Forum in November. Just a few points of clarification in the meantime.

There has not been any suggestion that level packs would become the smallest unit of availability. Photocopying copyright material is illegal and the photocopying of cards should be seen as a cause of increased costs. The overall aim is to minimise cost and price increases, and ensure the continuation of Smile Mathematics.

Dear Splash

When I first read that individual card orders was to be stopped because of the high cost I was shocked and appalled. However, on reflection I can see it being a positive influence on the SMILE scheme, only if certain changes are made in the make up of the order form.

1. Some cards should be replaced as worksheets. This is because in card form the cards get written on, lost, are poorly done (i.e. 0386) or are simply better as a worksheet (0339).

2. A number of cards are not included in the level order, the reasons for this include that they are rarely set (0146), we already have lots of copies (0473), are poor resources (0127), teach very little (0276), or have been replaced by other materials.
