Association News By Jeanne Christie, Executive Director, ASWM

In the months since the election a number of different people have asked me what changes in our activities we’re contemplating at the Association of State Wetland Managers. My response has been that we are going to move ahead with the projects we have planned for the coming year. We believe the areas we are focusing on remain very relevant. We have two new projects that will start in 2017. One will address how to utilize wetlands (on a continuum from natural to constructed) to solve challenges to programs that seek to improve water quality, address natural hazards such as floods and hurricanes, protect drinking water supplies, etc. In addition we will be assisting the states in helping them to understand and participate effectively through Section 401 of the Clean Water Act on federally permitted or licensed energy projects. We believe in both these areas there are significant opportunities to help states work effectively with other partners and interest groups to improve outcomes. We will continue to support the Wetland Mapping Consortium and the Natural Floodplain Functions Alliance. We will also have some new webinar series that will get started in 2017 including one addressing wetland invasive species control and management. There is also a workshop planned on wetland plant identification that is likely to be held in Kansas or Missouri, our annual State/Tribal/Federal Coordination Meeting, and more!

Page 5: ASWM’s Annual 12 Days of Christmas List In this Issue ...Ducks and Wetland Silhouette Vinyl Wall Decal Sticker Graphic -- $39.99 Made from high quality adhesive vinyl that will last

This is also a year when it seems likely that the new Administration and/or Congress will propose changes to federal programs that affect wetlands and other aquatic resources. We’ll need to address those as they occur and provide information to states, members and partners to support informed decision-making, encourage careful analysis of the outcomes of alternative approaches and foster the incorporation of sound science into programs to protect, conserve and manage wetlands and associated aquatic resources.

As I think about the future, I am inspired by the words I found—strangely enough-- in Wikipedia describing the accomplishments of the ‘Father of Floodplain Management’ Gilbert White. He started a legacy that merits our support. (See Table 1)

If we can each strive to undertake some part of the work needed to achieve these outcomes, there is no knowing what could be accomplished.

Happy Holidays!

Jeanne Christie Executive Director

The goals Gilbert White articulated in the mid-1900’s and pursued throughout his career were to:

• Reducesignificantlytheglobaltollofhazarddeathsand damages

• Facilitatepeace,throughjointwaterdevelopmentand management

• Makegeography(inparticular)andscience (ingeneral)moreusefultotheworld

Wetland Recipes for the Holidays and Messages from ASWM Staff

I attended high school in Bemidji Minnesota where it was possible to harvest wild rice—if you have the appropriate equipment. There were rules. Wild rice could only be collected at certain times. To harvest one person poled a canoe through the rice while the other bent the rice plants over the edge of the canoe and used a stick to beat the plants until the rice fell off. In a good location an amazing amount of rice could be harvested this way in a very short time.

This method of harvesting was not without peril however. One afternoon my father took a break from his work as a professor at Bemidji State College and my parents went out to collect some wild rice. My father poled while my mother beat the rice into the canoe. At one point when my father pushed off, the canoe moved forward but he and the pole remained behind. He soon found himself standing on the bottom of a shallow lake (likely a lacustrine wetland) in the mud. He returned to work looking a little worse for wear.

We also fished for walleye. They are excellent eating but about as exciting to catch as a wet sneaker. They are, however, far less hazardous than wild rice!

Winter has arrived. Every year I love to watch the first snow of the season enfold the land in a white blanket. I am enchanted all over again with this demonstration of how remarkable water is –that peculiar lopsided arrangement of one oxygen molecule and two hydrogen molecules that makes life possible. It truly is a miracle! During this holiday season I plan to take time each day to reflect with gratitude on the wonders of the world around me. I invite you to do so as well. May you, your family and friends have a wonderful Holiday Season.

~ Jeanne Christie, ASWM Executive Director

Ingredients

30-40 cattail flowerheads, peeled

Garlic butter:½ cup unsalted butter ½ cup olive oil½ teaspoon salt

12 garlic cloves, crushed 1 cup freshly chopped wild greens (or parsley or other fresh garden herbs)

Directions

Make garlic butter in a food processor by whipping the butter, oil, salt, fresh garlic and parsley together until smooth.

Note: If using salted butter, eliminate the salt from the recipe.

The olive oil makes the butter nice and creamy and spreadable, even after refrigerating. I like to make a batch of this to keep handy in the fridge. You can also make a larger batch ahead to freeze in small containers when the greens are in season.

1. Boil cattail flowerheads in water for 10 minutes2. Make garlic butter in a food processor by whipping the butter,

salt, fresh garlic and parsley together until smooth.3. Drain the cattail flowerheads and slather them generously

with the garlic butter.4. Eat them just like miniature corn on the cobs.

It’s been an honor and a pleasure to work with you this year in support of wetlands... and wetland creatures, big & small.

May Peace, Happiness, and Prosperity be yours during this Holiday Season and throughout the New Year!

Recipe from lexi’s clean kitchen

Hey folks! Welcome to the seasons of superior table scraps. Every year around the holidays some of the stuff that falls on the floor is truly amazing. Keep it coming! There are other things less likable about the holidays including the totally inappropriate activities of our human companions. You know what I’m talking about - putting ridiculous hats on canine heads - or antlers or making us wear red noses or silly costumes. Enough!

But I really don’t mind. I am a rescue dog and my life is better than I ever thought possible. I have a full belly, a warm place to sleep and best of all a loving family. It couldn’t be any better.

Happy Holidays, ~ Navia

10 November/December 2016

Wishing you a peaceful and joyous holiday season. Hope you savor the wonderful delights for months to come!

-Sharon Weaver ASWM Webmaster

Ingredients

•1/2 cup gluten free brown rice flour•3/4 cup gluten free millet flour•1 cup almond meal

(I grind whole raw almonds in my coffee mill or use your food processor)

•1/4 cup flax seed meal, opt•4-6 packets of Stevia or 1/8 teaspoon of pure

Stevia- depending on the strength of your Stevia•2 teaspoons GF baking powder•3/4 teaspoon salt

Directions

1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the dry ingredients until blended.

2. Add the coconut oil in pieces and whisk well to distribute. The flour mixture will get sandy and all the coconut oil should be incorporated. It took a few minutes for this to happen, so be patient.

3. Add in the eggs and beat. I changed from the whisk attachment to my dough hook. The dough is very thick and stiff now and that’s ok.

4. Add your almond milk a little at a time and just beat until you see the dough relax and become smooth and pliable. It should be slightly sticky, but not wet or thin.

5. Use only the amount of almond milk you need to get the dough to stick together.6. Add in your berries and gently mix for just a few seconds.7. Scoop the scone dough into the greased pan and using a wet spoon pat the dough into an even

round cake.8. Using a sharp knife, slice the dough to create eight wedges.9. Set the pan aside and Preheat the oven to 375º F.

Bake for 20 minutes.1. Carefully cut at your marks again, remove the scones from the pan and place them on a baking sheet.2. Brush the tops with a little almond milk3. Bake for another 10 minutes, or so, until the scones are firm and golden brown around the edges.

Gluten Free & Sugarfree Cranberry Almond Scones

•3/4 teaspoon xanthan gum (or try 1 teaspoon psyllium husks!)

•1/4 cup organic raw coconut oil•2 large eggs•1/3 cup almond milk, as needed•2 teaspoons GF pure vanilla extract•3/4 cup fresh or frozen berries. I used fresh

cranberries that I had in the freezer•orange or lemon peel-opt
