VANQUISH S IS THE FLAGSHIP OF THE WORLD’S MOST EXCLUSIVE SPORTS CAR MAKER

POWER, BEAUTY & SOULA DISTINGUISHED HERITAGE

In 1914, the founders of Aston Martin, Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford, beganbuilding handcrafted, high-performance sports cars. They believed sports carsshould have a distinctive andindividual character, be built tothe highest standards and beexhilarating to drive and own.More than 90 years later thesevalues remain true today.

Aston Martin has earned a reputation for anotherspeciality: building lifelong one-to-one relationships with each of its cars and with every owner. This is due to meticulous records and archives, plus personalattention from experts at the factory.

The Vanquish S effortlesslycombines 21st Centurytechnology and 200mph(321 km/h) performance, with understated elegance and craftsmanship.

To build such an extraordinarycar, the company has usedBritish expertise in aerospaceand race-car engineering.Conventional automotiveindustry materials andmanufacturing techniques were not good enough for the fastest road car in Aston Martin’s history.

The lightweight aluminium andcarbon fibre structure ofVanquish S is unique to AstonMartin. It is this specialcombination of materials thatgives the Vanquish S suchenormous strength andtorsional rigidity for superiorhandling, safety and durability.

This technology has becomethe Aston Martin signature oftoday; just as hand-formedaluminium panels were in thepast. (The aluminium bodypanels are still hand finished. It is the best way to achieve asuperb finish.)

As Aston Martin spearheadsdevelopments of its innovativeconstruction techniques, so it also leads with itssophisticated engine andFormula One-styletransmission. The Vanquish Suses the most powerfulversion ever of Aston Martin’shighly acclaimed 6.0-litre V12.

The six-speed manualtransmission is operated byF1-style paddles mounted on the steering wheel column. It can change gear in approximately 250milliseconds – or the blink of an eye.

The Vanquish S isunmistakably an AstonMartin. It is elegant, powerfuland dynamic. But there isalso a hint of menace in thisclassic Aston Martin design, with a dynamic tension in itsshape accentuated by therear flanks and their almostanimal-like ‘muscularity’.

DRAMATIC STYLINGADVANCED TECHNOLOGY

The Vanquish S offerstraditional Aston Martin style and a real depth oftime-honoured Britishcraftsmanship. But theseskills are combined withmodern ingenuity. The result is the Vanquish S – a car unlike any other.

Aston Martin’s hand-built 6.0-litre V12 is renowned asone of the finest engines in theworld: enormously powerful, smooth and beautiful. It canalso lay claim to being theworld’s best-sounding highperformance car engine.

In the Vanquish S, it reachesits zenith. Maximum power is 520 bhp (388 kW) at7000rpm, with maximumtorque of 425 lb ft (577 Nm) at 5800rpm.

Such power delivers sterlingperformance. Indeed, this isthe fastest-ever road goingAston Martin. Top speed ismore than 200 mph (321km/h), the 0-62mph (100km/h)dash is accomplished in only4.8 seconds while 0-100 mph (160 km/h) takes just 9.8seconds.

But it is the mid-rangeacceleration that is trulysensational; 50-70mph(80-112 km/h) takes only6.5 seconds in sixth gear.Overtaking is effortless.

V12 POWER & PERFORMANCEDESIGNED TO STIR THE SOUL

A key factor in the engine’sefficiency is its high-speedmultiplex communicationssystem, called PTEC (PowerTrain Electronic Control),which is capable oftransmitting information in four one-thousandths of asecond. There are twoPTECs, one for each bankof cylinders, linked by a high-speed system thatcontrols the fuel injection and spark timing.

Engine changes in theVanquish S include newcylinder head castings withrevised inlet ports andcombustion chambers withrevised profiles to improveairflow. A remapped enginemanagement system, together with new fuelinjectors and spark plugstakes advantage of thisimproved airflow. Finally, new hot forged connectingrods have been designed tohandle the increased cylinderpressure.

As you would expect, theVanquish S engine meets allemissions requirementsworldwide, includingCalifornia’s strict LEV (lowemissions vehicle) standards.

There is no mechanical linkbetween the Vanquish Sthrottle pedal and engine.Instead the movement of the throttle is electronicallymeasured to gauge how fastthe driver wishes to go. Thisinformation is then fed to theengine management systemwhich makes the enginerespond accordingly.

The PTEC system linksconstantly to the six-speedmanual transmission, which is operated by an electro-hydraulic gearshift. Unlikesome systems, the VanquishS allows the driver to ‘skip’down changes from say, sixthto fourth or fifth to secondwith a pull on the paddle foreach gear change. A failsafesystem ensures the engine willnot over-rev and willautomatically opt for the next highest ratio.

The driver has a number of gear change modes tochoose from. In Select ShiftManual (SSM) mode, thedriver shifts gears up anddown using the steeringcolumn-mounted shift paddles (right to upshift, left to downshift). The only timethe system intervenes for thedriver is at the red line, whenthe computer automaticallyupshifts. Additionally, there is Auto Shift Manual (ASM)mode, in which the computertakes care of all gearselections according to engine and road speedwithout driver intervention. But even in ASM mode, subtle use of the throttle can induce gear changes to enhance the drivingexperience.

There is an optional ‘Sport’mode in both settings. In SSM Sport, the system allowsthe driver to ‘bounce’ againstthe rev limiter without shiftingautomatically. ASM Sportallows the gearbox to revhigher to use more of theengine’s power, and shiftsmore quickly.

As a matter of convenienceand safety, the Vanquish S isequipped with a sophisticatedtyre pressure monitoringsystem. If the air pressure in a tyre drops below a leveloptimal for maximum drivingspeeds, a facia-mountedwarning light will instantlyilluminate.

If the sensor light flashes, itmeans that pressure in one of the tyres has becomedangerously low. A boot-mounted LCD readoutenables the driver to identifythe faulty tyre. Additionally,rain-sensing wipers andautomatic lights are standard.

INDIVIDUALLY HAND-BUILTWITH CARE & CRAFTSMANSHIP

Despite the high-technologyspecifications, the Vanquish Sis built in the same manner asother Aston Martins before it,one at a time, by hand. Anindividual craftsman takesresponsibility for the creationof every car.

In preparation for productionof the Vanquish, the factory at Newport Pagnell received a multi-million-poundrefurbishment that included an all-new assembly line, environmental paint shop, rolling road and water testfacility, which simulatesmonsoon conditions to ensurea watertight interior. Today, technicians who used to holdold-fashioned welding gunsnow wield dual-feed adhesiveguns to bond togethercomposite components, crash structures andaluminium panels.

Bonding, which doesn’tdistort the structure in anyway, leads to a moredimensionally accuratechassis than traditionalwelded steel.

Aston Martin engineers haveensured that these 21stcentury aerospace skills andmaterials come together toform a car that raises thestandards in performance, quality, safety, durability andcomfort.

The assembly process begins in a special bonding jig housed in a temperatureand humidity controlledenvironment. The speciallydeveloped braided carbonfibre ‘A’ posts are first bondedto the aluminium core, followed by the carbon fibre‘backbone’ tunnel .

Next, the rear structure, plenum assembly, bodysides, rear wings, and roof are allbonded to the aluminiummonocoque using a specialpolyurethane adhesive. Fromthere, the body shell moves tothe front-end simulator jig, where boot lid, doors, bonnet, front wings and bumpers arefitted to check alignment.

In the paint shop, each bodyreceives five coats of surfaceprimer, two coats of colourand two coats of clearcoat. The painted bodies, whichare hand-buffed after eachapplication, take two days to finish.

In the final assembly area, the twin-pump fuel tank isfirst fitted in its own safety cell in a cavity above the rearaxle. Next, engine andtransmission, fuel and brakelines, underbody heat-shielding, air conditioning, electrical harnesses andinterior sound deadening arefitted. Meanwhile the front-end structure, which will carrythe front suspension andengine, is assembled, as isthe rear suspension. Theseare then loaded to the‘marriage jig’ where thepainted body is lowered intoplace and the front crashstructure bonded on.

Once the car is on its wheels, craftsmen begin to hand-produce the cabin. Thisprocess takes more than 70hours of labour and eighthides of leather.

When finished, steering and suspension alignment are checked using laseralignment tools. The glass‘start’ button on thedashboard is then pressedfor the first time. Testing onthe rolling road, on nearbyroads, in the water booth, and a final inspection, complete the build process. In all, it takes just over 396man hours to create eachVanquish S, or around sixweeks from raw materials tothe finished article.

An Aston Martin, especiallythe ultimate Aston Martin, needs to delight its driver likeno other car. It needs fast, predictable handling, andsuperb roadholding. It needsto thrill, yet never surprise.

The Vanquish S is one of the best handling and mostpredictable cars in the world. It communicates to the driverwith utmost faithfulness, andyet with total entertainment.

SUPERB HANDLINGHIGH TORSIONAL RIGIDITY WITH

OPTIMUM STEERING & SUSPENSION

The suspension is light, and race-car like in design.Forged aluminium doublewishbone suspension is usedfront and rear, combined withsprings and dampers biasedfor superb handling. Precise‘quick ratio’ steeringimproves nimbleness anddriving precision.

Specially developed high-performance unidirectionaltyres mounted on lightweight11-spoke 19-inch aluminiumalloy wheels, further improvehandling.

The key to its nimbleness, and predictabiility, is its lightyet massively stiff bodystructure. Nothing dullsperformance like weight. The lower the weight, thesharper the response. Nogreat athlete is overweight.Nor is a truly great sports car.

The aerospace-style bodystructure also imparts superbtorsional strength, muchgreater than a conventionalsteel body. So the car staysin shape, no matter what theconditions.

This lack of body flex meansthe suspension and brakingsystem can be designedwithout the compromisesimplicit in a body structurethat is more pliable. Theresult is greater sharpness, great driver feedback, a richerdriving experience.

STRUCTURAL STRENGTHFOR PERFORMANCE & SAFETY

The Vanquish S has one of the most advancedconstruction techniques ofany road car, using compositematerials and processesfamiliar to the aerospacebusiness but rarely seen in the motor industry.

Each car starts as a heat-cured aluminium bondedmonocoque, known as the‘tub’, which uses acombination of extruded andfolded aluminium panels thatare bonded and then rivetedtogether. The tub is bonded to a nine-layer carbon fibretunnel, which gives theVanquish S an extremely rigidyet lightweight backbone. The benefit of a carbon fibretunnel over aluminium is itshigh strength-to-weight ratio. To provide the same levels ofstrength and rigidity, analuminium tunnel would beapproximately twice as heavy.

Carbon fibre also providessuperior insulation fromtransmission and exhaustheat in the passenger cabin. It is this unique combinationof tub and tunnel that givesthe Vanquish S its structuralrigidity and allowed engineersto develop a suspension thatcombines precise roadbehaviour with unrivalled ride quality.

The aluminium body panelsare shaped using a patentedSuperform process inventedfor the aerospace industry. The aluminium forms aresubmitted to 480-degrees Ctemperatures and 150 psi airpressure to create the deep-drawn profiles of theVanquish S, which areextremely difficult to mouldfrom traditional aluminiumstampings. Final shaping anddetailing of each body panelare done as they always havebeen at Aston Martin - byhand, to ensure flawlessedges and finish. This is notdone just for sentimentalreasons of heritage. It is stillthe best way to finishcomplicated panels.

Aston Martin was not contentwith complying with the moststringent crash criteria. TheVanquish S comfortablyexceeds them, thanks in partto the front end’s two forward-mounted technically innovativecomposite rails.

The rails consist of threeelements. The first is a layer ofglass fibres aligned in onedirection. A second layer ofcarbon fibres is laid at 90degrees to the first layer tomaintain the integrity of theglass fibres in a crash.

A third corrugated glass fibrecomposite element is used asthe carrier structure to holdthe crash rails in position.Similar composite parts areused in the boot floor toprotect the car from rearimpacts.

The Vanquish S is full oftechnological innovation, designed to improve strengthand safety. The advancedaluminium and carbon fibrebody is replete with worldfirsts. One example is thespecially developed braidedcarbon-fibre used for the ‘A’posts and the engine baycross brace.

Engineers from Aston Martininvented a novel braidingprocess that encases apolyurethane foam core withtriaxial carbon fibre. The resultis an immensely strong yetlight structure capable ofwithstanding the force of acrash or rollover.

Passive safety is only part ofthe equation. Equally vital inany car, and especially onewith the performance of thisAston Martin, is dynamicsafety. The Vanquish Sepitomises this with superblyresponsive handling, givingthe driver every chance toavoid any dangerous obstacleor situation.

The brakes provide enormousstopping power. The huge378mm ventilated front discsare gripped by new six pistoncalipers. The rear discs arethicker to help heatdissipation and give betterfade resistance. Both frontand rear discs are mountedon a patented floatingmechanism designed tomaintain consistent pedal feelunder sustained heavybraking. The brake pads usecompetition friction materialtuned to the disc and caliperto provide enhancedperformance and stability.

The antilock brake system(ABS) incorporates electronicbrakeforce distribution (EBD)which re-balances front andrear braking forces underdifferent loads. This helpsoptimise the brakingperformance of the car, cutting stopping distances in an emergency.

Traction control monitorswheel spin and adjusts enginepower accordingly. Whenengaged, the Wheel SlipProtection (WSP) modeoperates the clutch andgearbox, auto-shifting at 3200rpm in low-grip conditions toprevent sliding.

But it isn’t just themechanicals that make a carsafer. The design team spentmany hours in the wind tunnelhoning the car’s profile toensure stability throughout itsspeed range and adequateairflow for power and cooling.

INTELLIGENT ENGINEERINGREASSURANCE IN AN UNPREDICTABLE WORLD

A Formula One-style venturiand flat underbody increaseaerodynamic efficiency whilealso increasing the car’sbalance and stability at highspeed, essential in a 200mphsupercar. At the rear, anaerodynamically profiled bootlid reduces lift. Even theclassic grille plays its part –on the Vanquish S, itsrounder, more openappearance does more than enhance cooling. It is complemented by anaerodynamic ‘splitter’ at thefront, which improves high-speed stability.

PERSONALITY & STYLEHAND TRIMMED IN NATURAL MATERIALS

Great design is an AstonMartin hallmark. The companyhas made some of the world’smost beautiful sports cars. While other road users enjoythe external beauty of theVanquish S, both driver andpassenger will be equallyimpressed by the interior‚ a stunning blend of future and tradition.

Dominating the cabin is a fabulous leather centreconsole that arches from thetop of the facia down to thetransmission tunnel.

Grab handles and gear shiftpaddles are finished inmatching cast aluminium, while other interior stylingmaterials, such as full grainleather, Alcantara and Wiltoncarpet, are used to echoAston Martin heritage.

So does the black-on-creaminstrumentation, with numeralschanging to a soothing blue at night.

Owners have the choice oftwo interior configurations: a2+2 with rear seats or a puretwo-seater with a rear shelf toaccommodate a golf bag orpersonal items of luggage. Aswith all Aston Martins, customers are free to selectwhichever colour they chooseeither from Aston Martin’sextensive palette, or their own imagination and taste.

The exhaust note of the V12 Vanquish is generallyacclaimed to be the mostglorious of all sports cars. The sound unleashed by the car’s audio system isequally stirring.
