IntroductionBefore you install and use APC® PowerChute® Business Edition, read these release notes, which provide information about installing the product, everyday operation, application data collection, server nodes, and third-party software.

Note:These release notes sometimes use PowerChute to represent PowerChute Business Edition, for example, PowerChute Server instead of PowerChute Business Edition Server.

PowerChute Business Edition Release Notes 1

Installation OverviewUninstall other APC PowerChute applications before you try to install PowerChute Business Edition. These applications include PowerChute plus, PowerChute Personal Edition, and PowerChute Network Shutdown.

During the installation, you will do the following:

• Install PowerChute Business Edition Agent at each UPS-protected computer that you will manage with the PowerChute Business Edition software. These computers must meet the requirements listed in the following sections:- APC Hardware Requirements for Installation- UPS Communications Cable Requirements- PowerChute Business Edition Agent Requirements

Note:If the computer uses an unsupported UPS or an incorrect UPS communications cable, you might not be able to complete the PowerChute Agent Setup because the PowerChute Agent will not be able to communicate properly with the UPS.

• Install the PowerChute Business Edition Server at a computer that complies with the operating system, processor, and memory requirements listed in PowerChute Business Edition Server Requirements.

• Install the PowerChute Business Edition Console at the computers that you will use to monitor your UPS-protected systems. Those computers must meet the display-quality requirements listed in PowerChute Business Edition Console Requirements.

System Requirements for InstallationFor up-to-date information on the operating systems, service packs, and processors with which PowerChute Business Edition is compatible, see the latest revision of PowerChute Business Edition Operating System and Processor Compatibility Chart (APC Part Number 990-3058), available on the APC Web site at www.apc.com.

The computer must be connected to a TCP/IP network and meet the requirements listed in the following sections.

Note:To install PowerChute Business Edition on the Microsoft® Windows VistaTM, you must use the software patch (APC Part Number SFPCBE705VUP), available on the software download page of the APC Web site, www.apc.com/tools/download. This patch provides no new features, but ensures the correct operation of some existing features.

Supported UPS Models and AccessoriesPowerChute Business Edition Agent can manage any UPS that is shipped with the software, including most Smart-UPS® models that use advanced signaling with a serial port or USB connection. Basic signaling is also supported through an APC 8-Port UPS Interface Expander or APC Interface Expander Card, both of which use a serial cable to connect with the host computer.

UPS Communications Cable RequirementsThe PowerChute Agent communicates with the UPS through a communications cable that connects to the UPS and to a communications port at the PowerChute Agent’s computer.

Supported Environmental MonitorsThe PowerChute Agent can manage and report the status of the Environmental Monitoring Card (AP9612TH) with firmware revision S or later.

Before you Install PowerChute Business EditionBefore you perform the installation, note the following information about the installation process.

Installation Backs Up the default.cmd or default.sh fileWhen you install a PowerChute upgrade, any default.cmd file (Windows) or default.sh file (Linux and Solaris) is backed up as _default_backup.bak in the cmdfiles directory.

Incompatibility of Basic and Deluxe VersionsTo function properly, the three components of PowerChute Business Edition — the Agent, the Server, and the Console — must all be components of either the Basic or Deluxe version.

In addition, you cannot upgrade a Deluxe version with a Basic version or update a Basic version with a Deluxe version.

Characters Not Allowed in User Names and PasswordsIn user names and passwords, you cannot use a colon (:), a quotation mark (“), a question mark (?), an asterisk (*), an ampersand (&), a space ( ), or double- and single-byte Japanese characters. You can use an apostrophe (’).

Installation IssuesThis section discusses the issues and problems that can occur while installing PowerChute Business Edition.

Messages when PowerChute plus is InstalledYou cannot use PowerChute Business Edition and PowerChute plus on the same computer. When you attempt to install any PowerChute Business Edition component and Setup detects that PowerChute plus is installed:

• For a 5.x version of PowerChute plus, you are prompted to uninstall PowerChute plus automatically. Click Yes to uninstall it.

• For a 4.x version of PowerChute plus, a message informs you that Setup cannot uninstall PowerChute plus. You must uninstall PowerChute plus by using your operating system’s procedure for uninstalling programs.

Installation Messages that can occur as you install PowerChute Business EditionThe following messages (listed alphabetically) may occur while you are installing a PowerChute Business Edition component.

Message Description

An unidentified program wants access to your computer.

This message is a security feature of Windows Vista and occurs if User Account Control (UAC) is enabled. Click Allow to continue the installation.

Could not stop the UPS service. Please reboot and retry setup.

Setup failed to stop the native UPS service on Windows® 2000, Windows XP, Windows 2003, or Windows Vista. Reboot the computer before you attempt to install the PowerChute Agent again.

Error encountered while installing the <Agent or Server> service. Please reboot and retry setup.

Setup failed to install the PowerChute service. Ensure that no PowerChute files are already installed and that the computer uses a supported operating system. See the latest revision of PowerChute Business Edition Operating System and Processor Compatibility Chart (APC Part Number 990-3058) on the APC Web site at www.apc.com before you retry the installation.



Error <identification> on attempt to load dll: <dll identification>.

Setup failed to load the identified DLL file. Before you attempt the installation again:- Ensure that the computer uses a supported

operating system. See the latest revision of PowerChute Business Edition Operating System and Processor Compatibility Chart (APC Part Number 990-3058) on the APC Web site at www.apc.com.

- Ensure that the computer complies with the requirements listed in PowerChute Business Edition Agent Requirements.

Failed to load necessary resource.

Setup cannot load the DLL files, native InstallShield resources, and other resources needed to install the PowerChute component. Make sure that the computer has sufficient memory available before you retry the installation. See System Requirements for Installation.

Password is not 3-16 characters long.

Use a password that has at least three but no more than sixteen.characters.

PowerChute Business Edition requires administrator privileges to install and run. Please log off and rerun Setup using an administrator-privileged account.

You must have administrative access to the computer before you can install any PowerChute component.

Setup could not determine if the selected path is valid. Please select a directory on the local hard drive.

You cannot install PowerChute on a network drive or on any other drive except the local hard-disk drive.

Setup failed to restart the native UPS service. You must manually restart the service or reboot to enable power protection.

The Windows 2000, Windows 2003, Windows XP, or Windows Vista UPS service did not restart. The service is stopped when you uninstall an older version of PowerChute Business Edition, for example, in order to install a newer version of the PowerChute Agent. Restart this service manually or by rebooting the computer.

The two passwords must match to proceed.

The passwords you entered in the Password and Confirm fields must match.

Message Description



Incompatibility Message with Windows Server 2003 x64 EditionsWhen installing the PowerChute Agent on Windows Server 2003 x64 Editions in USB mode, ignore the warning “The software you are installing has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with this version of Windows.”

Wrong Time-stamp (in E-mail and Log Files) or Operating System Name on VistaIf you do not use the software patch (APC part number SFPCBE705VUP) to install PowerChute Business Edition on Windows Vista, the operating system name displayed will be incorrect and the time-stamp for e-mail messages and log file entries will be the Coordinated Universal Time (formerly Greenwich Mean Time) instead of the correct time for your time zone. Download the patch from www.apc.com/tools/download.

This OS is not supported. You tried to use the software patch (APC part number SFPCBE705VUP) to install PowerChute Business Edition on Windows Vista, but the file properties were set to Windows XP compatibility mode. If you canceled the installation previously and then selected “Reinstall using recommended settings” in the Program Compatibility Assistant (PCA), Windows XP compatibility mode is set for all subsequent attempts to run the executable file.

To correct the problem:1. Right-click on the executable file you

downloaded, and select Properties.2. On the Compatibility tab, ensure that “Run this

program in compatibility mode for:” is not check-marked.

3. Click “Show settings for all users.”4. If you are not already logged on as an

administrator, enter credentials for an administrator.

5. Click Continue.in the “User Access Control” (UAC) dialog box.

6. In the “Compatibility for all users” dialog box, ensure that “Run this program in compatibility mode for:” is not check-marked.

7. Run the .exe file again to install PowerChute.

Windows needs your permission to continue

This message is a security feature of Windows Vista. Click Continue.

User name is not 3-16 characters long.

The user name must have at least three but no more than sixteen characters.

Message Description


Messaging Fails on Windows VistaWindows Vista does not have the messenger service that Microsoft operating systems since Windows NT have used. The lack of this service disables the method PowerChute Business Edition has used to send messages to the local server and remote servers. If you have an alternative messaging system on your computers that can be called from a command file or batch file, you may be able to use that messaging system as a solution.

Setup May Not Automatically Detect the System’s UPSUse the following troubleshooting checklists if PowerChute Business Edition does not detect the UPS automatically

Note:Setup cannot detect a device connected by a basic-signaling cable. Therefore, during setup, specify the port and UPS type of a UPS connected through the basic port of an Interface Expander Card or 8-port Interface Expander. If auto-detection fails with an advanced-signaling or USB cable, use the troubleshooting methods in this section.

On Windows 2000, Windows 2003, or Windows XP, or Windows Vista, use the following checklist:.

• If another service, such as a terminal emulator, is using the COM port to which the UPS is connected, stop that service or connect the UPS to another COM port, and use Run Detect to have the setup program search again for the UPS.

• Ensure that the service APC PBE Agent is running.• Ensure that you are using the correct cable and that it is securely connected. See

UPS Communications Cable Requirements. After any changes, stop and restart the service APC PBE Agent.

• Unless you are using a USB connection, ensure that the COM port is configured as follows. To change any values, stop and restart the service APC PBE Agent.

• If you are using a USB cable,:- Ensure that the Communications Port is set to USB. (To change from a serial

to a USB connection, you must re-install the PowerChute Business Edition Agent.)

- Check your USB device through the Windows Control Panel, by selecting Administrative Tools, then Computer Management, then HID. if either HID, or (under HID) the driver American Power Conversion USB UPS is not displayed, ensure that the USB port is enabled at your computer. If you are using a USB hub instead (not recommended), ensure that the hub is receiving

power, check the hub’s documentation to determine if an adapter is needed, ensure that the USB cable to the UPS is the last cable in the chain, and ensure that all USB devices upstream from the UPS have are communicating.

• If either of the following is installed or connected, check its configuration:- A Network Management Card must be fully configured and operational.- If you are using PowerChute Business Edition to monitor an Interface

Expander Card or the basic port of an 8-port Interface Expander, ensure that you are using the correct cable (as listed in UPS Communications Cable Requirements), and that “Simple Signaling Accessory” was specified when the card or device was installed. If you are unsure what type of accessory was specified, reinstall the card or device with the correct settings.

• To check for USB connection defects, use another USB port and USB cable, or use a terminal emulator to check the connection. See Checking UPS Communications on Windows.

On Linux®, use the following checklist:

• Ensure that you are using the correct cable. See UPS Communications Cable Requirements.

• Stop and start the PowerChute Agent to be sure it is running:# cd <PCBE Agent Install Directory>/bin# ./startup start# ./startup stop

• Use the stty utility to verify that the serial port is configured correctly:- To list current settings: stty -F /dev/ttyS0 -all (ttySO is the port.)

- To change settings: stty -F /dev/ttyS0 2400 cs8 -parenb -cstopb ixon ixoff clocal (ttySO is the port.)

Checking UPS Communications on WindowsTo check the connection between an advanced-signaling UPS and the computer’s supported Windows operating system, use any terminal-emulation program. The following procedure describes how to use HyperTerminal.

1. Make sure that no other service is using the communications port.2. Open HyperTerminal at Start>Programs (or All Programs)>Accessories>

Communications).3. In the “Connection Description” dialog box, type a name to identify the

HyperTerminal connection, and click OK.

Note:If the message “...must install a modem” is displayed, disregard it.

4. In the Connect Using field of the “Connect To” dialog box, select the serial port that the UPS uses, and click OK.

5. In the “Port Settings” dialog box, ensure that the port settings are those listed for Windows in Setup May Not Automatically Detect the System’s UPS

6. When a blank screen is displayed, type an uppercase Y. - If the screen displays the letters, SM (Smart Mode), there is no problem with

the serial communications link.- If SM is not displayed, type an uppercase A. If the screen displays OK, the UPS

can receive signals, but it cannot send them. • The serial cable may be faulty. Replace the serial cable.• The computer’s serial port may be unable to receive signals because of an

interrupt conflict or a malfunctioning in the port. Try using a different computer.

• The UPS may be faulty. Try using a different APC UPS.

Note:If the problem persists, contact APC Worldwide Support (http://www.apc.com/support/).

Installing Older VersionsDo not install an older version of PowerChute Business Edition without first uninstalling the current version. If you do not uninstall the current version first, the installation can corrupt the version you are installing and leave unused, undeleted files.

Starting the PowerChute Business Edition AgentAfter the installation process is completed, the PowerChute Business Edition Agent begins running automatically. The Agent runs automatically each time the operating system is started. To start the PowerChute Business Edition Agent manually after it has


been deliberately stopped, enter the following command at the shell prompt from anywhere in the file system:

<pcbe_agent_directory>/bin/startup start

Stopping the PowerChute Business Edition AgentTo stop the PowerChute Business Edition Agent when it is running, enter the following command from anywhere in the file system:

<pcbe_agent_directory>/bin/startup stop

Uninstalling PowerChute Business EditionIssues on Windows: The following issues can occur when you are uninstalling PowerChute Business Edition on Windows:

• The native UPS service might fail to restart. See the description of the error message Setup failed to restart the native UPS service. You must manually restart the service or reboot to enable power protection.

• If you uninstall PowerChute from a Windows operating system, the native Windows UPS Service is restored, but you must configure it to start automatically.

• After you uninstall PowerChute Business Edition, you might need to remove some files and folders manually. Delete the installation folder, including its contents, if it still exists.(the default folder \program files\APC\PowerChute Business Edition or the non-default folder you specified during the installation). If PowerChute Business Edition is the only APC product installed, also delete the APC folder.

• If the following message occurs when you attempt to uninstall the PowerChute Business Edition Agent, the Agent is either not installed or is not responding:Error encountered while removing the Agent service. Please reboot after setup exits.

• On Windows 2003 Web Edition only, some files are not deleted when you uninstall PowerChute Business Edition. These remaining files will not affect the operation of your computer system.

• If a PowerChute Business Edition event is open in the Windows Event Viewer while you uninstall the PowerChute Business Edition Agent, you might receive the following misleading error message:InstallShield Wizard installed PowerChute Business Edition properly.The word “installed” should be “uninstalled.”

Issues on SolarisTo uninstall the PowerChute Business Edition Agent on Solaris, enter the absolute path to the script uninstallPowerChuteBusinessEditionAgent in the directory where the Agent has been installed. For example, if the Agent is installed in


/opt/APC/PowerChuteBusinessEdition/Agent, enter the following command at the shell prompt to uninstall the PowerChute Business Edition Agent:

/opt/APC/PowerChuteBusinessEdition/Agent/uninstallPowerChuteBusinessEditionAgent

Issues on both Solaris and LinuxJVM files remain if you cancel a Solaris or Linux installation.

You must remove these installed files manually when you cancel an installation on these operating systems.

Upgrading PowerChute Business Edition to a New VersionUpgrading the Server and Console Requires Upgrading the AgentsIf you upgrade the Server and Console components of PowerChute Business Edition without upgrading the Agents, the Agents may not function normally. Always upgrade all the Agents when you upgrade the Server and Console.

Order of Upgrading ComponentsIf you upgrade PowerChute Business Edition manually (when Product Update is disabled), you must install the PowerChute components in this order: Agent, Server, and Console.

In an Upgrade with RPM, the Agent displays Linux version as Operating System If you upgrade PowerChute on Linux using rpm -u, the Console sometimes specifies the operating system as the Linux Kernel version number, e.g., 2.4.21-20.EL. To correct this problem, run config.sh (stored in the Agent installation directory).

For the Power Restore Event, E-mail and Notifications Might Not Be SentIf you upgrade from a previous version of PowerChute Business Edition, with some UPS models, e-mails and notifications are not sent for the Power Restore event. To avoid this problem, reapply the profile; in the Console help file, see The Configuration Profile - How to Reapply the Configuration Profile.


Operational IssuesThis section describes issues that affect the use of PowerChute Business Edition.

Known Issues on All Operating SystemsUPS Self-Tests Not Always LoggedUPS Self-Test events are not always logged in the PowerChute event log.

Self-tests initiated from the front panel of the UPS are never logged. Sometimes, self-tests initiated by PowerChute or by APC accessories are not logged.

Out-of-Band Management Access Causes Comm Lost EventWhen an APC Out-of-Band Management Card tries to obtain information from a UPS, it can cause the PowerChute Agent to log a UPS Communication Lost event and subsequently a UPS Communication Established event.

The Start of Daylight Saving Time Changes Scheduled ShutdownsIf your operating system automatically advances your computer clock by one hour at the beginning of Daylight Saving Time, any scheduled shutdowns occur one hour later also.

For example, if a shutdown is scheduled from 4 a.m. to 6 a.m, but Daylight Saving Time starts at 2 a.m and your operating system automatically advances the computer clock, the shutdown occurs from 5 a.m to 7 a.m.

In these circumstances, you can restart your PowerChute Business Edition Server but not your Agent or any of the server services before the scheduled shutdown ends (7 a.m. in the example).

Note:Scheduled shutdown times are not changed automatically at the end of Daylight Saving Time.

Known Issues on WindowsCommunications Issues When a DNS Server Cannot Be ReachedYou might experience network communications problems from the PowerChute Business Edition Agent, Server, and Console if any of the following conditions exist:

• Your network does not have a DNS server.• Your local system has been disconnected from the network recently.• A network issue exists between the local system and the DNS server.• You are running a peer-to-peer network or a stand-alone system.


To correct the problem, configure PowerChute Business Edition to use IP addresses and not attempt to resolve hostnames with the DNS server:

1. Open the PowerChute Business Edition Console.2. Select Preferences on the View menu.3. Select the Network tab.4. Disable (uncheck) the Resolve Hostnames option.

Click Apply.

Limited Users on Windows XPThe PowerChute Business Edition Console is not for use in Limited Users mode on Windows XP. Limited Users are unable to execute the console.exe program.

SNMP ServicePowerChute Business Edition relies on your system's SNMP Agent to send SNMP traps. You have an SNMP option in the PowerChute Console even if your system does not have an SNMP service.

Console Does Not Clear EventWhen PowerChute Business Edition is using basic signaling, the Time On Battery Threshold Exceeded event is displayed on the PowerChute Console after the event condition has ended.

Check the event log for the current status.

You can clear the event from the Console in any of three ways:

• Stop and then restart the PowerChute Agent.• Reboot the operating system.• Temporarily change the UPS port. In Device Properties - Communications -

UPS Communications, Change the port, and click Apply. Then change the port back to its previous setting, and click Apply again.

Change User Name/Password is UnavailableThe Console displays the Change User name/ Password option in dimmed text (indicating that it is unavailable) when monitoring an Agent whose version number is prior to 6.1.0. When the Agent is removed from the Console, this option becomes available again.

Standby Mode Disables the Agent TemporarilyThe PowerChute Agent Windows service does not work while the computer is in Standby mode.


iKernel.exe Application ErrorAfter uninstalling either the PowerChute Agent or Server on Windows XP, a dialog box iKernel.exe - Application Error might display this error:

The instruction at “0x771c741a” referenced memory at “0x00163b60”. The memory could not be “read”. Click on OK to terminate the program.

To correct this problem, download and install a patch from the Microsoft Web page http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9cf87cda-c7f3-41a2-8ea3-cc4f03ff0e31&DisplayLang=en. Although the article on the Web page is “Issue with DirectX May Cause DVD Players To Not Work,” the patch is relevant to this problem.

Standby Can Postpone a Scheduled ShutdownIf your Windows computer is on standby at the time for which a shutdown is scheduled (through the Shutdown Schedule command), the shutdown starts after standby mode ends, even if the time scheduled for the shutdown has already passed.

For example, if a shutdown is scheduled for 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., and your computer is on standby at 7 p.m., it will not shut down at that time. But if the computer resumes normal operation at 9 p.m., the shutdown begins when standby ends. Notification indicates that an administrative shutdown began at 7 p.m., and a minute later the computer shuts down. The computer turns on again twelve hours later.

“R2” Missing in About Dialog BoxOn Windows Server 2003 R2 x64 Edition, “R2” is missing in the About PowerChute Business Edition dialog box.

Known Issues When You Use Microsoft Internet ExplorerDisabling Active Scripting Causes Problems with PowerChute Log-onIf you disable active scripting in Internet Explorer:

• you cannot log on to PowerChute Business Edition Agent.• An ActiveX control in the log-on screen of PowerChute Business Edition Agent is

marked as unsafe

If active scripting is disabled, enable it. For Internet Explorer 6.0, you enable active scripting as follows:

1. Select Internet Options on the Tools menu in Internet Explorer.2. On the Security tab, open the list of custom level settings.3. Under Scripting, near the end of the list, enable “Active scripting.”

Security Alert when “Launching programs and files in an IFRAME” is disabled.If “Launching programs and files in an IFRAME” is disabled in Internet Explorer, a Security Alert is displayed when you try to log on to PowerChute Business Edition Agent.

If “Launching programs and files in an IFRAME” is disabled, enable it. For Internet Explorer 6.0, you enable it as follows:

1. (Select Internet Options on the Tools menu in Internet Explorer.2. On the Security tab, open the list of custom level settings.3. Under Miscellaneous, enable “launching programs and files in an IFRAME.”

Distorted User Interface in PowerChute Business EditionThe User Interface of the PowerChute Business Edition Agent becomes distorted when you enable “Ignore colors specified on Web Pages” in Internet Explorer.

If “Ignore colors specified on Web pages” is enabled, disable it. For Internet Explorer 6.0, you disable it as follows:

1. Select Internet Options on the Tools menu in Internet Explorer.2. On the General tab, click Accessibility... 3. Unmark the check-box for “Ignore colors specified on Web pages.”

“Every visit to this page” Option for Checking Web Pages Is Not SupportedAs the method by which Internet Explorer Web browser checks for newer versions of stored pages, the PowerChute Business Edition Agent does not support “Every visit to the page”.

To correct the problem. configure “Automatically” as the method for Internet Explorer to check for newer versions of stored pages. For Internet Explorer 6.0, you configure it as follows:

1. Select Internet Options on the Tools menu in Internet Explorer.2. On the General tab, under Temporary Internet files, click Settings... 3. Select “Automatically.”

Known Issues on SolarisFailure of Shell Script to StartA Shell Script will not execute from within the PowerChute Business Edition Agent for Solaris unless you modify the script.

As the first line of the script, you must call the shell under which the script will run.


Known Issues on LinuxOn SLES 10, PowerChute Business Edition Agent Does Not Start after RebootingOn SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) for X86, AMD64, EM64T, and Itanium (SLES 10), the PowerChute Agent does not start automatically after a reboot. To correct the problem:

1. In /etc/init.d/PBEAgent, add the following two lines to the comment header. They are read as configuration parameters by chkconfig.# chkconfig: 2345 99 99 # description: PowerChute Business Edition Daemon

2. Save the file. 3. From the terminal, type chkconfig -a PBEAgent once to register the daemon

to start after a reboot. Then verify that the daemon starts after a reboot.


Application Data CollectionThe first time you use the PowerChute Business Edition Console, a prompt asks if you want to enable the program’s application data collection feature. You can also use the Data Collection tab in the “Preferences” dialog box to enable or disable this feature at any time.

When application data collection is enabled, PowerChute Business Edition tracks the program features that you use, such as dialog boxes, menus, and icons, and records information about your UPS, such as model number and runtime. It then periodically transmits these data to American Power Conversion.to help American Power Conversion understand how you use PowerChute Business Edition in order to improve future versions of this and other APC products.

The application data collection feature does not send personal information or information about your network, your equipment, or other applications that you use.

Note:The internet communication that sends the data shows your IP address, but APC does not save that IP address.


Server Node LimitsThere is no limit to the number of PowerChute Business Edition Agents, Servers, or Consoles that you can install on your network.

There is a maximum number of PowerChute Agents that can be managed by a single PowerChute Server (which is also the maximum number of UPSs that you can monitor from a single Console). The Basic Edition of PowerChute Business Edition has a limit of 5 nodes, and the Deluxe Edition has a limit of 25 nodes.

To identify the node limit for a PowerChute Server, use the PowerChute Console to access the About command in the Help menu.
