AsThoughtarchitecture from concept to built formOur main goal is to describe the design process, the architectural solutions and the detailing choices of a built work in a chronological order. The dream – that is also the ambition – is to tune at the best the structure of this on-line manual and to spread around its template in order to amplify the power of collecting and publishing in a such huge way that in a few years we could arrive at the largest open source and most browsed utility for architectural students not only in Europe.

Project description: New EDI Headquarters
History of Commission: A building that was a high-powered steel factory in the 50’s expirienced a transformation into
a new and creative environment for the hedqaurters of one of the leading television and cinema
post-production companies in Italy - Effetti Digitali Italiani (EDI).
Main architectural ideas: One of main goals was to maintain the original industrial nature of the space while addapting it
to the new demands. Once it moulded iron, today it processes bites that flow through the visible
wires from the tech room to each work stations.
Project description
9Nuova sede EDI - RMA + tiarstudio
In the Chinatown of Milan, Effetti Digitali Italiani (EDI), category leader in the sector of post production for
cinema and television, has opened its new headquarters in a converted a 50’s factory. The light filters
through a roof with beautiful vaulted sheds more than 7 meters high. Once full of metal work machinery,
the space today is made of three navels, each thirty five meters long. The project focused on maintaining
the original industrial nature of the space.
Shaped like a large white box, the project is perforated by three new courtyards to enable the light to
enter into the area without windows. Once it moulded iron, today it processes bites that flow through
the visible wires from the tech room to each work stations. The operative part is a large high ceilinged
open space where big round table with 10 work stations are connected to one another with a system
that provide them with data and electric energy, the raw materials for the production of virtual images.
The mechanical and electrical elements are neither hidden nor emphasized in any way; they just appear
where they are of use since this is above all a place of production. Then there are the boxes; here a steel
roulette constitutes the small cinema in which clients can watch the post productions. A large green
container contains the tech room, the operating heart of the system. The computers are dismantled,
modified and repaired in a box cladded in perforated metal sheet which allows the light to filter though
the wholes, resembling a very large lamp. Other boxes are designated for clients; one is made of yel-
low wooden boards, another of dark iron slates. These boxes are connected by a suspended 25 meter
boardwalk which hangs onto the ceiling, accessible via three staircases; these create a pathway which
looks over the work stations and connects the meeting rooms in the main space to the entrance.

office presentation RMA
We do not invent new forms, but re-CYCLE the existing ones, to dismantle and re-ASSEMBLE. We put
the pieces together by changing the order and the rhythm, we re-MIX forms and re-INVENT new combi-
nations. We carry on a soft revolution. We do not have to sell an image, we re-START from scratch each
time. We re-WORK information, analyze and organize. We re-THINK the way the spaces are used, and
re-FILL them with new meanings. The quality of life in a quality space. We built and re-BUILD respecting
our habitat. We re-USE traditional materials with new technologies, we re-DISCOVER the old lessons
in new. We re-FRESH the image of our desires. The new is the different mix of old and new ideas, held
together by the re-DESIGN.
tiarstudio
tiarstudio was founded in the beginning of the year 2001 as a professional association based in London.
It is now located in Italy. Working within the realm of experimental research at the confluence of architec-
ture and technology, we heve developed a working philosophy based on the experience gained in the
offices Federico have previously worked for. We are equipped to manage a project through every stage
from due diligence to test fit, budget develpment, design develpment, design documents and contract
administration. Since the formation of the office we have been involved on private and public commis-
sion in both Italy and abroad and on architectural design competitions.
My name is Svens Delle and I am on a journey to become an architect. When I started out, I did
not know what I had just started, but never have I doubted the choice.
In a way I believe that designing is similar to playing with toy bricks but instead of material bricks ar-
chitects deal with their knowledge. A single brick is just a metaphor for each individual thing one has
learned, therefore the more one knows, the bigger the possibilities are.
Originaly from Riga Technical University (Lavtia) but studying in Politecnico di Milano (Italy) while working
on the ASthought project. Travelling and getting to know different cultures, arts and traditions has been a
mind-opening experience without which I would not be the person that I am right now, and it is important
to point out that it has shaped the way I observe architecture and approach any new design project.
