Queen Mary

"Being chosen as your 1979 Homecoming Queen makes this a special Homecoming for me. I considered myself fortunate to be one of the ten girls nominated, now I'm excited, proud, and grateful to speak to you today as Assumption High School's 1979 Homecoming Queen. The feeling of security and belonging is important to all. This opportunity to represent the 1979-80 class is the best way I know to feel a part of the Assumption Community ... "

That's Entertainment

AHS Style

Mrs . Hinchmen , chorus director, worked hard this year to display the variety of talent at Assumption. On ovember 9th and 10th many students performed to very responsive crowds . Unfortunately there is not enough space to give credit to each act, but congratulations to everyone for a great show.

Kelly McGuiness and Mary Huber do the vaudville act, "They'll ever Split Us Apart."

CHORUS

A.H.S. Chorus and Assumptionaires directed by Mrs. Hinchman always does an excellent job of jeading the school in musical key . The Assumptionaires, a select group of our school's finest vocalists sing at our school masses, concerts, weddings, and this year they tried something new. They gave a Grade School Tour, or "gig" as referred to by Assumptionaire Alto Kathleen Callahan. The Concert hoir (below) participates in the Christmas program and the Spring concert.

The girls softball team had a busy 1979 summer . The young softball players compiled a season record of 4 wins and 10 losses. Under the direction of Mr. Bill Fox and Mr . Dick Loos the Knights faced tough competition with older , more established teams.

Work begins in May for the girls 1980 season. We're sure you will be hearing a lot about them this summer .

ONE-MAN SWIM TEAM

While the majority of Assumption students were still in bed, Senior George Gerwe was diligently practicing swimming.

As the lone member of the Assumption Boys Swim Team, George has been practicing twice daily with the Beetendorf swim team. He began this summerwith morning practice and has been busy lifting weights also.

All of George's hard work and effort have odviously paid off. At the sectional meet this winter, George acquired more team points than an entire ten man team! He also qualified for the state swim meet in Ames. There he will compete in his specialty, the 100 free style.

Assumption can certainly be proud of it's students and George Gerwe is no exeption.

Mr. Donald Miller, Principal, and hi ever-popular morning announcements gave us the day's schedule.

Mr. Tom underbruch, Dean of tudents, left, is always checking excuses, day after day. Yet he still finds th energy to be at chool at 7:15 to greet us all at A.M. detention.

Fr. Tom Gehlsen, right, returned to AHS this year as Assistant Principal after 2 year of absence. Have we changed much, Father?

We have an administration that we can be proud of Thanks for your dedication to our education.

TOURNAMENT TIME

Girls Basketball The varsity girls entered tournament play as one of the favorites to make it to Des Moines for the state tournament. The lady Knights opened tourney play with a convincing 66-49 victory at Clinton as sophomore Monica Missel had 40 points. The next game at Bettendorf featured two of the top rated teams in the state but the Bulldogs, with allstater Leann Resh scoring 49 points ended the Knights dream for a state tournament bid by a score of 68-56.

The girls compiled a 15-4 record which is the best ever in the girls basketball record book.

This is a season that the girls can certainly be proud of for years to come.

TOURNAMENT TIME

Assumption ' s wrestling team had two contenders at the State meet this year. Tim Gould (155) and D.J. Wallace (HWT) qualified in one of the toughest districts in the State. While neither was a top finisher at State, reaching the State tournament was still a major accomplishment.

Mike Froeschle, a Conference leader, was a big favorite to be in Des Moines but he was upset in the District meet. Craig Stear just missed qualifing in the Super Heavyweight division.

Wallace and Gould have been the leaders of the wrestling team all year and were both chosen as MVP's of the team . These two seniors have accomplished much during their careers.

This year was especially tough on Gould . He received a broken nose earlier in the season and had to wear a facemask for the remainder of the season. He became known as the "Masked Man" to his opponents.

Wallace made his first trip to Des Moines this year. He, too , has been a strong force in area wrestling.

Both Wallace and Gould were named to the First Team All-Conference by the Conference coaches.

The girls gymnastics team capped-off their fine season with a trip to ST A TE.

Entering the district tournament the girls were rated 3rd in the State but the 1st & 2nd ranked teams were in the same district. The girls beat #2 Clinton in the district and both Clinton and #1 Cedar Rapids Washington in the regional contest.

At ST A TE, the Assumption girls captured 2nd place, only 7 of a point behind Clinton .

Led by super senior Carol Czupka , the gymnasts accomplished great team victories. Carol closed out a 4-year career with school records in most events and an individual ST A TE championship on the balance beam when a sophomore.

1. Kathy Mooney leads the cheer after learning that the girls won regional. 2. Jacque Hein gets ready to perform floor exercises . 3. Mary Riley does her thing on the balance beam . 4. Beth Figge makes a good impression on the judges . 5. Carol Czupka performs on the mat.

Knights fight tourney jitters The district tournament was one of great excitement and thrills for Knight fans as well as the team . Muscatine was the first opponent in tourney play and they almost put a halt to the Knight's season right there. The Muskies fought back from an 11 point deficit to tie the game at 48. But Brice McPherson hit a long jump shot to give the Knights the lead and Paul Weiman was fouled on the same play. His two free throws completed the 4-point play as the Knights escaped 59-51.

Central was the next opponent and this game was in doubt only for the first minutes . The Knight raced out to a 24-6 lead during the first quarter and cruised to an 86-52 victory. Weiman led the Knights with 26 points. Clinton was the SubState opponent before the trip to Des Moines. The Knights made a terrific comeback in the fourth quarter to post a 72-62 victory. Clinton Coach Don Greunwald commented on the play of Paul Weiman who led the Knights with 30 points, "He's a bona fide AllStater ."

Knights pull big surprise We cheered! We whistled! We shouted ourselves hoarse but we didn't are! We were CHAMPS! - the team, the coaches, the fans - all of us CHAMPS!

We were Mississippi 8 Conference champions in the regular season. In the district competition we beat Muscatine before we wiped-out Davenport Central.

A swarm of red packed Muskies gym for the ub-tate game against Clin

ton. With our nosed glued to the evening paper we waited for OUR Knights to be introduced. Hearts pound d and a mighty roar greeted our team. wiftly play began.

With the final buzzer came victory after stopping a Clinton surge. Everything was worth it. How great to watch the world turn Red & White and know the Knights were going to carry our colors to Des Moines.

Pride filled us all. WE WERE GOI G TO ST A TE!

WAHLERT, ASSUMPTION IN 3-A FINALE The 1980 State tourney is one that will be rem mbered for years to come. The Knights defeated Burlington 70-58 in their quarterfinal game as Paul Weiman led Assumption with 29 points. In the semi-finals Terry Sodawas er's 24 points led the Knights past Central Waterloo 73-65 as the Knights fought back from a 10 point deficit. We earned the right to meet Dubuque Wahlert in th finals. Wahlert boasted a 22-0 record and had been ranked #1 all year.

Assumption's dream of a State Championship faded when Wahlert outlasted the Knights 71-67. The Golden Eagles knew they were in a game as they had an 11 point lead cut to 2 in the final seconds.

With a 22-3 record, best in AHS history, Coach McPherson said it best, "We took 2nd, we didn't loose."

Greatness, In the last analysis, Is largely bravery--courage In escaping from old Ideas and old standards and respectable ways of doing things. This is one of the chief elements In what we vaguely call capacity. If you do not dare differ from your associates and teachers, you wlll never be great or your life sublime. You may be the happier as a result, or you may be miserable. Each of us Is great Insofar as we perceive and act on the Infinite possibllltles which lie undiscovered and unrecognized about us.

It took

all of you, the student body, to make our book

"Special!"

Wasn't 1979-80 GREAT! We "hung in there" - all the way: - fall football with its spirited Homecoming - "Th Miracle Worker" and rave reviews - "That's Entertainment - Assumption Style" - Winter's super sports with 3 Conference championships

Girls Gymnastics, Boys Basketball both varsity & sophomore - enjoying an evening with "Fiddler on the Roof" - March Madness and tournament fever

the girls brought home the 2nd place State Gymnastics trophy the boys took 2nd place in State Class 3-a Basketball

- the assembli s, the banners, the dances, the parties Thanks to all of you for making Assumption #1.
