Suggested duologue for gramophone record on MALARIA by Dr. S. An- necke, Senior Malaria Officer, Union Government.

A. Hello Hoodoo!B. Sakubona Madona'.A. Why are you lying down so pale?B. Oh, we are bewitched? That wizard, Ndona, has bewitched us all.

His dithuris are worrying us all the night - we can hardly slumber or sleep.

A. It sounds funny, and how can that be?B. Yes, it is so, his dithuris buzz all the night and bite every

one of us in this kraal thereby giving us no sleep, for instance, Nogiela is sick, Makana is sick, Mashilele is sick, and everyone of us is sick, so no doubt we are all bewitched.

A. Oh, (laughter) I know the dithuris you mean. I am doctor forthose dithuri - I am also able to prevent them from biting you and making you sick, moreover, I am able to show you these dithuris any time.

B. Shall I not die if I see them?A. No (laughter) the dithuris of yours are only mosquitoes which buzz

all the night round and bite everyone in your kraal.B. Are you sure?A. Yes, very sure.B. Are all mosquitoes dithuris (vectors)?A. No, no, only the female mosquito thuri of the two well-known

mosquito species.B. Please show me one of these dithuri.A. All right, let us go into the hut. Here you are, here is one in

this dark corner.B. Oh, I have seen this long ago, and have not known them to bring

any sickness.A. Yes. They do. They bring sickness like that you have now. It

is called Malaria.B. Is that so? And how can a mosquitoA. If this mosquito in hand bite^" oU'J t S t n e n after a certain time

bites another healthy man, he shall be sick like you.B. Hov/ can I get rid of these mosquitoes?A. Oh, only do what I tell you and. remember, I am a doctor who has

learnt all these from (Mlungu). Buy a sprayer and put muti in it, from the Magistrate’s office. Then spray your kaya. When you are sick get 25 quinine pills and grind them. Throw them in a bottle the size of a whiskey bottle and fill the bottle with water up to the base of the neck and shake well. Then start your treatment like this: First take a good dose of epsom salts, and then 3 tablespoons of this quinine mixture three times daily (and one at night if you wake up) for one week. Be sure to lie down and keep warmly covered.

B. Am I to eat no food?A. Of course at first you will not feel like eating, but you can drink

very much water all day. Mahewu is very good! Towards the end of the week you can take light food such as potatoes, pumpkins, and fruit. Kill a chicken and make soup and eat the soft meat. Later your appetite returns and now you strengthen your weakened body. Eat plenty of vegetables such as mushiji (blackjack), more chicken and the soup and milk.

B. Thank you "Muntu” of the Mlungu for your advice, and now I am goingto do all that you have told me.

A. So I will be glad Maduna if you will do that and also tell other people to do the same.

---0O0---Thuri - Witchcraft agencies, unseen bodies carrying out instructions

This term to be substituted to terms in use by Zulus, MaXhosa, and others, depending on language being recorded.

Dear Rev. Coan,In reply to your letter of the 17th ult., and to our con

versation of recent date, I Fish to state that I am deeply interested in the success and development of the work of the Clinic at Wilberforce Institute, and I would be glad to serve that community in any reasobable way that was publicly and generally desired.

If there was a general desire in the community for ray services at the Clinic, 1 would be willing to make certain re-adjustments in my private arrangements in order to meet the schedule of attendances as carried on at the clinic at present.

1 could not, however, maKe the trips for less than Pour Guineas per trip. But 1 would be willing and be on call free of change, not more than once a week, for any real emergency or urgent case who is a member of the clinic or a student of the college.

Besides, 1 would have to be given a free hand in the development and organisation of the medical aspect of the clinic outside the non-medical aspects, such as Finance etc.

I would, of course, be responsible to, and co-opescate with, a Board of Management of the clinic whose membership should be composed of people representing various orgnisetions and varied interests

d t f j f i t r & i n i n g ,

Even if there was, at the present time, a general desire for my services, it would be difficult for me to come to a final decision and change my priwate professional arrangements until

(1) The attitude of the Bishop,on the point, has been ascertained(2) Until it is knovn how far the Bishop or the Institution was

committed in arrangements wfctta others.Pending information on these matters, I may be used in any other

way that will help the work of the clinic.Yours sincerely,

My Dear Brother:I am writing you in interest of a Native Soy, who

lives in your city. His name is Reuben Makhubele, 180 Commissioner St., Joeburg.

This young man wishes to come to America to study medicine at Howard University. I have written that school. Also wrote Prof. Jabavu to be sure of the young man,s standing as related to schools here.

Howard University will admit him to their school of •Liberal Arts after he passes his Cambridge certificate. But not to the medical school. Prof. Jabavu thinks it best for Mr. Makhubele to get more education in So. Africa.Even going on to Port Hare. Then coming to America.

I agree with Prof. Jabavu. Houever, please set this young man right in his course. No one in SO. Africa knows better what he will need to meet the educationhfere than you. That is my reason for writing you. Please tell him just what he will have to know before taking the course.

I am to be responsible for him when he gets here. That is alright. So you need not put yourself out on that point.

The people here all say they are very glad I went to Africa. They claim I am the first one to bring back light and hpoe from Africa. Have you seen Mr. Nkosi yet?I am afraid he did not enjoy his stay in America. Part of this was due to the fact that he is not a friendly person himself. But believe me/ I sure enjoyed my trip to Africa/When I talk about Africa the people sit like they are glued to the seat, staring at me like a bird being charmed to its death by a snake, mean while the silence of the grave reigns

How are the children? Please give them my love. Also Mrs. Morake when you see her. How are my blind friends/?

I am writing Reuben today. He will come to see you.Yours very sincerely £)

Dear Sir/Madam,

The Executive of the above Committee was moved by the pressure of time to send Mr. Lewin to Northern Rhodesia last Monday before adequate funds had been collected to meet his expenses and before a complete policy had been agreed to by the full Committee.

With regard to the funds, money is needed urgently, and you are asked to communicate immediately with the Treasurer, 44-3326, if you are able to contribute.

The policy that Mr. Lewin should adopt was discussed by Messrs. Sachs and Makabine and the Executive Committee, but it is now desired to submit this policy to the full Committee in order that it be fully discussed and formulated and the conclusions be submitted to Mr. Lewin. A meeting of the full Committee will be held on Friday. May 17th at 2.15 p.m. at 113 Union Centre. It is particularly desired that this meeting should be fully representative, as a wire has been received from the Commission allowing our request to give evidence and to be legally represented at the Enquiry.

Yours faithfully,G-. Routh
