Editorial
ummer is now but a memory. Bonfire Night and Remembrance Day have
been and gone, and Christmas races towards us. Does time speed up as
we grow older? It does seem so.
Thinking back to summer, I do recall happy, hot, sunny days and visits to
National Trust properties - as well as English Heritage ones! It is always
interesting to revisit our local properties, to enjoy the familiarity as well as to
see what's new. But it's also good to take the opportunity, especially when
away from home, to visit new properties.
When we were up in the Midlands, seeing relatives, my wife and I visited
Wightwick (pronounced 'Witick'!!) Manor and Gardens. We only learned of the
place in chance conversation in the hotel where we were staying. It is a most
interesting Victorian Arts and Crafts House, full of Pre-Raphaelite art, and set
in really attractive gardens. It was a wonderful surprise, and well worth the
visit.
I do hope you too have enjoyed a good summer, and are now ready to join us
in all of our Association's many and varied winter and spring activities!
I hope too that you enjoy reading your Newsletter. I endeavour to ensure it
promotes all our activities in a clear and attractive way, as well as reporting on
past activities, so those of you who were unsure, or unable to attend, may be
encouraged to do so next time!
And now, very best wishes to each and every one of you, for this the
upcoming religious and festive season of Christmas & New Year.

Chairman’s Report
inter, here we come! Where has the summer gone? I am sure we have
all been involved in family matters, and I hope you have all enjoyed your
holidays. Despite all of this, your Committee have been very busy planning the
winter programme.
The Annual Golf Day (article and photos on
subsequent pages) I am pleased to report was
again very successful. We shall soon be planning
next year’s, and hoping for a few more entries in
2018.
A storming success, was the outing to Firle Place.
It was so rewarding having a full coach load. In
fact we had to book a larger one instead of the
small one that was previously booked. Cathy
Frewen, who researched this trip was delighted
with the result, especially as we had the added surprise of an extended outing,
to visit the Clergy House in Alfriston. I know Cathy has written a report on the
day, so I will not enlarge any further.
Philip Romani and I had the pleasure of presenting a cheque for £500 to the
Winchelsea NT. It was used to purchase a time lapse camera and owl boxes.
It was very encouraging to see that the donation from our Association had
been mentioned on ‘Facebook’, and there were a few pictures that had been
taken with the camera. It is so rewarding that our efforts are not in vain and
that our fundraising is put to good use.
In late August, two members of the Committee were invited to spend an
evening at Scotney Castle. Ros Adkins and I were delighted to accept the
invitation. We had a very pleasant tour of the house, grounds and the old
castle. In the kitchen of the house were a variety of old hats, and of course, we
just had to try them on!!
Our annual ‘Meet and Greet’ this year took place at Sissinghurst Castle, yet
another success. It was a pleasure meeting so many of you on a glorious
summer’s day, in such fantastic surroundings. It was my privilege, on your
behalf, to present Troy, the Head Gardener, with a cheque for £1,000 to fund
the copper urn that was stolen from the North Garden in the 1960’s. Troy
assured us that there was no way this one would be stolen as it was securely
W

bolted into a concrete base. After a tour of the gardens we were treated to
coffee and homemade shortbread biscuits by the catering staff. As one
member said “The best Meet and Greet ever!” - such a pleasure to have
positive feedback.
As I have already mentioned, we have had a very busy summer, but now let
us look forward to our winter programme. Maggie has worked her magic once
again and organised a very entertaining series of lectures, the first of which we
have already enjoyed. Please keep a check on your Newsletter so that you do
not inadvertently miss an event.
What better way to get into the Christmas spirit than to join us on Thursday 7
December for our Tea Dance. It will be great fun, so let’s see you all there!
Christmas refreshments will also be provided.
Looking ahead even more, Lovat has organised yet another Theatre trip in
April. “Sunset Boulevard” is a must.
Our Spring Lunch has just been organised. Your committee decided it would
be good to have a change this year. So, we have booked the Cooden Beach
Golf Club. We feel sure you will all enjoy it! (more information on page 19).
The Walking group, I know have been going at a steady pace, will have had
their Christmas lunch on Thursday 30 November. Thank you Phil and Phil for
organising this popular activity.
As I do not wish to take up the whole of the news letter, I shall sign off by
wishing you all:
A VERY HAPPY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY AND HEALTHY NEW YEAR!

Treasurer's Report
ur Current Balance is: £4383. This is after these donations in recent
months:
£1,000 to Sissinghurst for a special Copper Urn for the Garden (which many of
you will have seen at our Meet and Greet).
£500 to Winchelsea to purchase bird nesting boxes and time-lapse cameras.
Your Committee has also agreed a major donation of £2,000 to Smallhythe to
finance the refurbishment of the remaining chairs in the Barn Theatre.
In August we held our annual Golf Day which raised the wonderful sum of
£688. We hope to add to our funds following the annual fund raising events
coming up in the next few months: the Christmas Party Tea Dance, the
Murder Mystery Evening, the April Theatre Outing, and the Spring Lunch.
A full update of funds raised and donated during the year, will be given at our
AGM on Thursday 15 February. This is held at Brede Village Hall starting at
2.00pm, prior to the talk on that day.

Membership
e are nearing the end of another most successful year, and I am
pleased to say our membership is most encouraging. This is in most
part due to the very full and varied programme we manage to organise, taking
into account the variety of interests and activities which the members enjoy.
We are always open to suggestions for further events and would be most
receptive to new ideas which members wish to put forward.
Recently we have had the pleasure of welcoming to our group,
Rachel Baker, Roger and Jenny Farrant, Anne Jeffrey and Jane Pereira.
We hope we shall have the pleasure of their company at many events.
Membership subscriptions are due by the end of the year and it would assist
me greatly if these could be forwarded to me as soon as possible, decreasing
the necessity of sending out reminders. The Renewal Form is at the back.
Please note the important following article & changes to the Form.
Subscriptions can be either paid by cheque or bank transfer (details on the
form). Most of you will be aware that it is not a pre-requisite to be a member of
the National Trust in order to join the National Trust Rye & District Association.
With very good wishes to you all for the New Year. Cathy Frewen

Data Protection Requirements
any of you, if not all, will be aware of the Data Protection Act.
This, from time to time, explicitly impacts our lives – sometimes
irritatingly. Most of us will have encountered frustration when we seek
information over the telephone but are denied because of ‘Data Protection’.
However, the purpose of the Act is to protect each of us from unwanted or
illegal use of our information – names, addresses, bank accounts and such.
All organisations that collect personal data, no matter how little the data, do
have a responsibility under the Act. The extent of the legal requirement upon
an organisation does depend on the type of organisation and its use of data.
We are a non-profit voluntary organisation and the National Trust advise that
we are not required to formally register with the ICO (Information
Commissioner’s Office) as a Data Controller or Data Processor. However, we
are legally required to take due care of your data and only use it for purposes
of which you are aware and to which you are in agreement.
So, we have now set out a Data Protection Policy. This is on the reverse of the
Membership Form (at the back of the Newsletter) and will be displayed on the
notice board at meetings, on our webpage and also Facebook page.
It is important for each and every one of you, our members, to read this policy.
Hopefully you will find it both acceptable and reassuring.
The amended Membership Form has wording such that by completing the
form you consent to the policy. For existing members who renew without
completing a new form, it is important that we obtain your consent too. So, we
invite any members who do not consent to the policy, to contact the
Membership Secretary as soon as possible, certainly prior to the AGM in
February. Such members will be able to request reduction or amendment of
their data that we hold. Clearly, if any member requires us to delete/destroy all
their data, then they could no longer be a member of the Association, and
would effectively be asking us to terminate their membership. We sincerely
hope none of our members would demand this! Members who do not contact
us before the AGM, to object, we must assume consent to the policy.
Finally, on a legal note, new Data Protection legislation is about to come into
effect in May 2018: the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This is
an EU legislation and is essentially a tightening up of the existing UK Data
Protection Act (DPA) of 1998.

An Urgent Plea for Committee Members!
e really do need more help on the committee - two more would be ideal!
If you were at the 2017 AGM you would know that our Chairman,
Marion, will be standing down at the 2018 AGM. Also, Cathy, our Membership
Secretary, is resigning too. So, the committee now has the challenge of finding
replacements for two key roles.
If either of those roles is of interest to you, then please do step forward! But, if
you would wish to help us as an ordinary committee member, you would be
more than welcome.
We are a very friendly and relaxed committee. We already have a Secretary
and Treasurer, so do not worry that we are looking to fill those roles! However,
there are several other committee members, and it is to assist them that we
seek new members. In particular, we urgently need help with organising
Outings - which are currently a major challenge for the committee.
We meet approximately once a month in a committee member's house.
Meetings typically last an hour and a half, and invariably are followed by tea
and cakes!
Our meetings are not onerous, and cover the following:
considering ideas for future events and activities, that we believe our
members would enjoy and support
agreeing which ideas to pursue, and by which committee members
reviewing projects proposed by our local National Trust properties
assessing our finances, and deciding which projects to support, and
what donation we are able to make
So, as a new member, you would not be expected to take on any specific
responsibility, unless you were really keen to do so! However, you would be
invited to assist existing committee members, and 'learn the ropes' from them.
If you think you may be interested, but not sure, why not ask if you can come
along to a committee meeting as a 'no commitment' observer?
To find out more, please contact Marion or any member of Your
Committee.

And, a Second Plea – for Help at Lectures!
nfortunately, Brede Village Hall does not provide a service for setting up
the Hall before our Lecture Meetings, or clearing up afterwards.
So, your Committee has to ensure enough of us can be at the Hall at least half
an hour before the meeting. We then have to take chairs from the sides of the
Hall and off the stage, and arrange them in rows. After the meeting we do the
reverse.
It really would be an enormous help to us if a few of our members could
volunteer to assist us with this.
At the October Lecture, we had the embarrassment of our speaker assisting
with the chairs! Luckily she was happy to help, but she really should not have
had to, and we apologised afterwards.
The Committee obviously need to man the entry desk, set up display boards,
set up table & projector, assist the speaker prepare, and, of course, prepare
the kitchen to provide refreshments after the lecture.
If volunteers could arrive early and assist with the chairs, and then help put
them away afterwards – that would be most kind –
AND VERY MUCH APPRECIATED!

Fun Golf Day Review
ur annual golf day which took place on Friday 18 August was yet another
success.
Forty players took part, some of whom had to tee off during a rather sharp
shower. Spirits were not dampened, however, and after a few minutes the rain
cleared and it remained dry all day.
Although we had eight less players this year, the food at the ‘Halfway House’,
supplied by members of the Committee, was a welcome sight and eagerly
consumed. As usual, the team who manned the Halfway House, namely Julie
Etches, Cathy & Laton Frewen and Louise Hull, did a tremendous job. Thank
you all four.
In usual style, the day concluded with a superb meal in the Club House. The
raffle, organised by Julie, raised £200, a wonderful effort.
The prizes were presented by our Vice Chairman Lovat Bonnet.
Thank you to all of our members who competed and supported the day.

Outing Review: Firle Place and The Clergy House
Tuesday 5 September
e were delighted that so many members were able to join us on this trip,
the coach being almost full to capacity.
Firle Place, owned and still occupied by the Gage family, dates back to the
15th century and lies discretely in the South Downs, surrounded by extensive
parkland.
We were given a warm welcome with tea or coffee and two groups were
shown around the house by extremely informative guides. The main body of
the house, built of pale Caen stone, presents the appearance of an 18th
century mansion. Within the house are remarkable examples of porcelain,
furniture and fine art, which all told stories of the various generations of the
Gage family and their royal connections.
The staff at Firle provided us with an ample lunch of various sandwiches, tea
and coffee.
There was time after lunch to wander around the garden. Some of the party
managed a visit to the private church of St Peter which is within the grounds.
This houses alabaster effigies of the 16th century Sir John Gage and his wife,

Philippa. The newly installed stained glass window, created by John Piper
(see below), enhances the charming atmosphere of this most private place.
With yet more 'energy' in our tanks, Dave, our driver, took us safely over to the
Clergy House in Alfriston. This is the most delightful 14th century home
thought to have been built in the aftermath of the Black Death in 1348. It is
said to be the first property purchased by the National Trust during the time of
Octavia Hill, one of the founding members. The sum for this purchase was
£10 in 1898! On one of the corners of the Main Hall is carved an oak leaf (see
below) - said to be the origin of the National Trust's emblem. 'From little
acorns do big oak trees grow'.
A tour of the many local tea shops for some well earned refreshment was
necessary before concluding a remarkable and memorable day.

Review: Meet & Greet 2017 at Sissinghurst
his was a wonderful occasion, certainly the best Meet & Greet I have
attended. (held on Friday 22 September)
We all arrived bright and early, on a warm and sunny morning, ready for a 10
o'clock start. We split into small groups, each with a guide, and enjoyed a
private tour of the gardens before the general public entry at 11am. Then we
all gathered near the new North Garden, to meet Troy, the Head Gardener.
Our Chairman Marion, presented Troy with our
cheque for £1000 for the project to purchase
and install a Copper Urn to replace the original
which was stolen several years ago.
Troy then gave a fascinating talk about his
plans for redeveloping the gardens to be more
like the original concept of Vita & Harold
Sackville-West. He outlined the plans for the
New North Garden, the home of the new urn.
We were then invited to be the first visitors to
this garden, which is still under construction. A
special privilege!
Our visit ended with refreshment in the
restaurant, courtesy of Sissinghurst.

Outings 2018
our Committee is currently investigating several options for Outings in the
Spring and Summer.
These have yet to be finalised. If we do so prior to the next Newsletter, we will
contact you by email and advise you to use the Event Booking Form on the
very last pages, 39/40. Also, we will make a Booking Form available to you for
collection at our Lectures.

Murder Mystery Quiz Night - Saturday 24 March
s you may recall, this was planned for Saturday 14 October, but sadly had
to be cancelled because the Playden Players were heavily committed to
the Rye Arts Festival & unable to prepare a new play in time. But, the good
news is they now have time, so we can now look forward to an excellent
evening of entertainment.
Many of you will have attended our popular and successful annual Quiz Nights
in Beckley Village Hall, usually in November. This year your Committee
decided it would be fun to have a somewhat different quiz! Hence, a Murder
Mystery Quiz Night, and in Brede Village Hall (not Beckley).
The Murder Mystery will be presented by the Playden Players a group of
enthusiastic actors who devise, write and act “Murder Mysteries”. Besides the
play, the Players will prepare a short quiz (with a prize for the winner), which
will be placed on the team tables.
It will be at 7:00pm for a 7:30pm start, with, as usual, tables for teams of eight
people. You are welcome to make up your own group or to come as an
individual and join a mixed table.
The cost is £10 per person and includes a hot supper. Please bring your
own drinks, glasses and nibbles, plus any friends who wish to come along!
Payment can be collected and paid on the day by the team captains.
To book a table, or put your name down, please contact Julie Etches: either
phone 01797 225317 or email at: [email protected].

Theatre Trip: Sunset Boulevard
Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury, Wednesday 18 April, 2:30pm
he musical is based on a cult 1950 film, which was directed by Billy Wilder
and starred William Holden and Gloria Swanson. Cecil B DeMille also
played himself as a film director. The film received eleven academy awards.
The musical received a Tony Award and is considered one of Andrew Lloyd
Webber’s masterpieces. The story is one of obsession and romance. Ria
Jones (star of many of Lloyd Webber’s musicals) plays the lead character
Norma Desmond, a faded silent film goddess, living in a fantasy world in her
mansion. Into this fantasy world stumbles an impoverished writer, Joe Gills,
seduced by Norma’s life style. The show features some great songs such as
With One Look, The Greatest Star of All and Sunset Boulevard.
The cost of the theatre and coach combined is £54 per person. There is a five
to ten minute walk from the coach park to the theatre, along a path by the
river. The theatre has a pleasant restaurant for a light or full lunch. In the high
street, there is a vast choice of eating places.
The Times has given an excellent review, which you can Google if you wish.
Please use the Booking Form in the back pages to reserve seats as soon as
possible, as we have to pay the theatre well before the event.

Spring Lunch
The Cooden Beach Golf Club - Saturday 28 April 2018
oin us for our Annual Lunch - which this year is somewhere different! Vive
la Change!
Marion & Cathy have carried out a ‘reccy’ and managed to negotiate a special
deal in a superb venue with excellent food - The Cooden Beach Golf Club.
The address is: Cooden Sea Road, Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex, TN39 4TR.
It is approximately 13 miles from Brede Village Hall, a 25 minute drive.
With every expectation of a 'good turnout', we have booked the main dining
room on the first floor and with panoramic views (there is a stair lift for
members who cannot manage the stairs).
We have been able to agree a really delicious menu, and for the excellent
price of £26.50pp (including tea/coffee and gratuities). This is only a slight
increase on the £25pp achieved for the last three years - so we hope this will
not discourage anyone!
A Menu and Booking Form are in the back pages. Please complete the form,
cut off from below the menu, and return as stated on the form.
We shall meet in the bar at 12.30 with the lunch scheduled for 1.00pm.
This is a wonderful opportunity for us all to get together and enjoy good food
and conversation in a really attractive setting. We all look forward to seeing
you there!

Lectures for 2017/18
ll lectures start at 2:00pm at Brede Village Hall.
Thursday 7 December:
Christmas Celebration Tea Dance
This year something different! Jack Davidson, a
dancing instructor, will be coming along to provide
music and some instruction, and encouragement
to help us let our hair down to celebrate
Christmas. We will of course have our usual
Christmas fare of sausage rolls, mince pies,
nibbles and mulled wine. Even if you have two left
feet, please do join us for some fun!
(For this event, we do require you to complete the Booking Form, in the back
pages)
2018 Lectures
Thursday 18 January: Andrew Ashton –
“Banksy and Street Art”
Andrew is a new speaker to our group. He
describes himself as a lecturer, an artist, a
curator and a gardener. He will be giving us
an insight into this illusive and anonymous
artist and his somewhat controversial style of
art.
Thursday 15 February: Laton Frewen – “Sad and Strange Tales from the
Titanic Disaster”
Laton needs no introduction as he
has given us many splendid talks
in the past. I’m sure this will not
disappoint as he returns, on the
afternoon of our AGM, to give us
an unusual insight into The
Titanic.
A

Thursday 15 March: Russell Bowes – “Food of the Gods”
Some of our members may remember
Russell’s talk on tea. This time he will take
on the role of Willie Wonka, who will be
telling us about the origins of chocolate,
and maybe even bringing some samples!
Don’t forget your Golden Ticket!
Thursday 19 April : Geoff Doel –
“Jane Austen and the Regency”
Geoff is another returning speaker. He is a
Lecturer at Canterbury University. On this
occasion he will be talking to us about Jane
Austen, who died in 1817 and whose
bicentennial was in 2017. We will get an
insight into the times she lived in, and where the inspiration for her novels
came from.
Thursday 17 May: Sarah Page “The Sussex Trug - Basket of the Weald”
Sarah will be giving us a talk about the
history of the Sussex Trug, and showing us
the tools that are used and the finished
article. She will also be bringing examples of
the various different types of trug and copies
of her book, which is being launched this
month.
Admission is £4 for members and £5 for visitors, but the charge includes
refreshments! However, for the December meeting, please see the
Booking Form in the back pages.

Walking Group
Another Year
s we move into the 8th year of running this walking group, I can't help but
wonder where on earth the time has gone.
Things are wearing out! I threw my old faithful walking shoes away recently
and at the time wondered if they had been value for money. Silly me, with over
70 walks completed for the National Trust alone, I think the answer is obvious.
My walking trousers swamp me after my recent illness, and these have also
gone in the bin, and my rucksack and map cover aren't long for this world.
Even the quiz pencils won't stand another sharpening. (we are off to IKEA
soon.... )
So what about my knees, feet, hips etc? Well, thankfully they are all holding
up fine and show no sign of needing replacing, which is just as well, as I've
just planned the dates and details of the walks for 2018 - which you will find
below.
2017 has been a great year with some wonderful walks. Even though most of
us are prepared to endure the rain, the weather has been extremely kind to
us, although I can't say the same for some of the photos I've taken on each
walk - which included embarrassing struggles over styles, footwear faux pas,
and on seeing himself caught off guard, one walker remarked "I still don't
understand why my wife married me!" So, whether it's the scenery, the

exercise, the camaraderie, the lunch, the quiz (yes really!) members keep
coming back for more, so I guess Phil and I must be doing something right!
So, if you want some real fun, and haven't already done so, why not join us?
2018 Walks
nless stated otherwise all walks start at 10.30am and are approximately
five to six miles followed by lunch. There is a £2 charge for each walk
which includes entry to both the 'Guess the Steps' competition and the
lunchtime Trivia Quiz, and of course with luck you may recoup your
investment!

Rye & District NT Association is on the INTERNET!
e have a web-page on the National Trust website, and we have entries
in the online community newspaper 'Rye News'. Also, we are in the
process of developing our own Facebook group.
Our National Trust Website Page
www.nationaltrust.org.uk/features/rye-and-district-association
The page is principally to attract new members. It explains who we are and
what we do. However, it is also a useful resource for our members, because it
provides online access to view and download:
our current Events List
our latest Newsletter
and, our Membership Form
Our web-page can be accessed directly by either of the following:
typing the above link into a web-browser
going to the National Trust website and using the search facility at the
very top of the page, right hand side, to search on 'Rye supporter
group'
or, by a 'Google' search for 'Rye National Trust Association'
Our Facebook Page
Please visit our Facebook page and help to make it a success. It
exists to keep our 'online' members informed of the Group's
activities, allowing you to share experiences and comment on
anything you want to. You will find information on recent and
upcoming events and photos taken by both the committee and members.
If you are already a Facebook user, you can find our page here:
https://www.facebook.com/Ryenationaltrust/ . Save it as a 'favourite', and take
the opportunity to help us make it a useful means of communication, and so
attract new members.
If Facebook is something you have to date avoided, think of it as a web page
that can be instantly updated by any of its members, who can view and post
photos, make comments, ask questions, access current and past newsletters
and other useful documents.
W
- 28 -
If you want to try it, you will need to create a 'Facebook Account'. But, you
don't need to get involved in any of the inane nonsense that many of us
associate with the 'younger facebook-generation' - nor do you need to share
any of your personal details with anyone else. You can also, if you wish,
switch off all notifications and only view the page as you would any other web
page. If there is demand from our members, we will create a step by step
guide on how to use Facebook, and which settings need to be altered, for
those that wish to ensure privacy, and only wish to use it to access our page.
Monthly Email Update
We endeavour to issue a Monthly Email to briefly summarise up-coming
events, and also update members with any significant news, prior to the
subsequent Newsletter.
Rye News online Community Newspaper
Rye News ( www.ryenews.org.uk ) includes a 'What's on Guide', and we are
now putting all our events into this calendar. Additionally we plan to submit
articles and photographs from time to
time.
We also have an advertisement which
appears on various pages, in rotation with
others, either on the right hand side, or at
the bottom if viewed on a smartphone.
Click on the Advert, and you are taken
directly to our National Trust web-page.
The Advert is principally to attract new
members.
John Wright & Phil Maynard
If you are unaware of Rye News, I do encourage you to take a look.
"Rye News is a not-for-profit enterprise being run by volunteers with the purpose of
benefiting the local community. It provides a forum to discuss issues and promotes Rye
and the surrounding area to a local and wider audience. Rye’s online newspaper is
here to showcase what is positive about our town and the villages about us. Within our
area, a wide circle of about eight miles, Rye News represents an open invitation to all
residents, businesses and voluntary organisations to keep us all informed."
