While this is no longer true today in that neuroscientific developments in this region have been immense in the last two decades, ANEI still remains a platform for budding neurosurgeons and neurologists to express their formative ideas. But there is reason to stop and introspect for a moment. Have we made the younger generation of neuroscientists in this region our members? Are the many basic scientists striving in laboratories to find a cure for gliomas or motor neuron disease been embraced within our folds? Are we getting our senior members, including those involved with the founding of the Association, still enthused to attend our meetings and deliberations? Most importantly, are we seen in the national perspective as being a regional facilitative organization rather than as a break-away group? Are we encouraging our youngsters to contribute articles to the almost dying journal of our organization, where there are not enough articles to print issues? Some questions do not need answers to be provided, but merely postulated. The overwhelming majority of established neuroscientists in all our member states must feel to be a part of our family, and every one must see our Organization as a necessary stepping stone to further scientific achievements. Can we not adopt the policy of each member making ONE new member this year? The strength of an organization lies in its numbers, and unless we get younger colleagues to join, we will no longer remain recognizable in the region. Let us take this up as a challenge so that we can enrol more members before our annual conference gets under way in the scenic city of Shillong. Our dynamic Secretary is always ready to facilitate the process. A sea change is occurring in the Medical Council of India and indeed in the medical curriculum. It is time we had our own thoughts on the matter, and voiced this as a regional representative body, to the powers that be. Also we must be mindful that we need to perform our social responsibility. The Centre and the Supreme Court has taken a strong stand on head injury and road accident prevention. Can we do our own little bit in our respective states to increase public awareness on this front? Our country after all now tops in the tally of road deaths, and brain injuries tops the cause of deaths. While the law agencies seek to enforce the law, is it not our duty to explain need for observing the law? Neural tissue after all does not sprout readily after damage! Finally we need exchange between our various departments in this part of the country- exchange of ideas, trainees and trainers. ANEI can help facilitate this process. Let's plan such programmes so that our budding neuroscientists can be benefited. Once they see the benefits, they will surely join our Association. Long live ANEI ! Vol. 23 No. 1 September 2016

The Association of Neuroscientists of Eastern India was founded with the intention of

providing a forum for the neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists and

neuroanesthetists of this region to promote the neurosciences in what was then seen as a

region where modern trends had not percolated into far flung areas of our country. While

this is no longer true today in that neuroscientific developments in this region have been

immense in the last two decades, ANEI still remains a platform for budding neurosurgeons

and neurologists to express their formative ideas. But there is reason to stop and introspect

for a moment.

Have we made the younger generation of neuroscientists in this region our members?

Are the many basic scientists striving in laboratories to find a cure for gliomas or motor

neuron disease been embraced within our folds? Are we getting our senior members,

including those involved with the founding of the Association, still enthused to attend our

meetings and deliberations? Most importantly, are we seen in the national perspective as

being a regional facilitative organization rather than as a break-away group? Are we

encouraging our youngsters to contribute articles to the almost dying journal of our

organization, where there are not enough articles to print issues?

Some questions do not need answers to be provided, but merely postulated. The

overwhelming majority of established neuroscientists in all our member states must feel to

be a part of our family, and every one must see our Organization as a necessary stepping

stone to further scientific achievements. Can we not adopt the policy of each member

making ONE new member this year? The strength of an organization lies in its numbers, and

unless we get younger colleagues to join, we will no longer remain recognizable in the

region. Let us take this up as a challenge so that we can enrol more members before our

annual conference gets under way in the scenic city of Shillong. Our dynamic Secretary is

always ready to facilitate the process.

A sea change is occurring in the Medical Council of India and indeed in the medical

curriculum. It is time we had our own thoughts on the matter, and voiced this as a regional

representative body, to the powers that be. Also we must be mindful that we need to perform

our social responsibility. The Centre and the Supreme Court has taken a strong stand on

head injury and road accident prevention. Can we do our own little bit in our respective

states to increase public awareness on this front? Our country after all now tops in the tally of

road deaths, and brain injuries tops the cause of deaths. While the law agencies seek to

enforce the law, is it not our duty to explain need for observing the law? Neural tissue after

all does not sprout readily after damage!

Finally we need exchange between our various departments in this part of the country-

exchange of ideas, trainees and trainers. ANEI can help facilitate this process. Let's plan such

programmes so that our budding neuroscientists can be benefited. Once they see the

benefits, they will surely join our Association.

Long live ANEI !

Yours sincerely

SECRETARY'S REPORT

Dear Esteemed Members of ANEI

It is an honor to become the Honorary Secretary of ANEI and it is no less a responsibility as much it is a privilege. I feel

proud writing my first report as the Secretary of ANEI. The past year has been very dynamic, we have been able to get a home

in the virtual world, as www.anei.co.in All official communication is being done using [email protected] as the email

address. The membership of ANEI has increased from 263 to 296.

MIDANEICON 2016 was very successfully organized by Guwahati Neurological Society under the guidance of Dr.

Roopjyoti Hazarika. I am pleased to announce that ANEICON 2016 is being organized by Dr. Bernard T. Lyngdoh and his

dynamic team, at Shillong, Meghalaya. The theme of the conference is Traumatic Brain Injury. The CME also includes a

Neurocritical Care lecture and discussion session under guidance of Dr. Bibhukalyani Das. Dr. Shankar P. Gopinath, Chief of

Neurosurgical Service at Ben Taub Hospital, Houston, Texas USA, has consented to share his experiences and expertise in the

conference. A lot of young neurologists- and neurosurgeons-in-making have applied for award papers, free papers and

posters. The association will also be awarding cash prizes to members for publications in peer-reviewed journals.

The three years of secretaryship of Dr. T. K. Banerjee were very productive and rewarding and the Association has

grown multifold under his guidance. I am grateful to him also for his support and guidance as the Vice President of the

association over the past one year. Dr. Indrajit Roy, President, ANEI has been an inspiration and I thank him for his

continued encouragement. I take this opportunity also to request all ANEI members to promote the association amongst

their colleagues and juniors and encourage participation in academic activities. I request the members to submit articles to

our official journal, JANEI.

Our seniors have worked very hard in bringing the society to where it is now and I seek your support in taking it forward.

Best wishes

Sincerely

Dr. Anil Kumar
