President, ANBAI Karnataka
Dr Venkatesh Krishnamoorthy
Greetings from ANBAI, Karnataka!
The National Board of Education is synonymous with postgraduate Medical Education in the country, for the past 37 years. The NBE has brought in a significant change in the pattern of educating as well as evaluating the postgraduate medical students, in all specialities.
ANBAI has been working closely with the NBE to bring about a cohesive working relationship with the NBE.
This year, on the 20th of April 2019, ANBAI in Karnataka is organizing the First ever Regional Teachers Day Awards, for senior NBE teachers of the State. This ceremony and function is significant, because we choose to honour the pioneers of teaching in the NBE stream.
The first DNB Accredited Institution in the Karnataka was started in 1984. These are the people who made path-breaking changes in the way PG Medical teaching happened, and brought recognition and equivalence to DNB teaching by way of involving the private hospitals in Karnataka.
ANBAI conveys its gratitude to all the teachers on this mementos occasion.
With regards,
Dr. Venkatesh Krishnamoorthy President, ANBAI Karnataka

“Teachers, I believe, are the most responsible and important members of society because their professional efforts affect the fate of the earth”. Helen Caldicott
The Association of National Board Accredited Institutions [ANBAI] was formed with the objective of catalysing the energies of various National Board accredited institutions towards encouraging and evolving better teaching programmes and works closely with the National Board of Examinations in its journey towards Quality post graduate medical education in our country.
The ANBAI Karnataka Chapter under the able guidance and stewardship of Dr. Venkatesh Krishnamoorthy has done an excellent job in introducing innovative ideas and improving the quality of post graduate medical training in member Institutes.
We are happy to note that the ANBAI Karnataka chapter has chosen to identify and acknowledge the yeomen, dedicated, selfless services of DNB teachers who have put in more than 15 years of service. This meeting will also provide an opportunity for all stakeholders to interact and deliberate upon issues to improve and encourage institutions to take up DNB course.
We are also happy to note that Dr. Vinod Paul, Chairman Board of Governors, MCI along with Dr. Abhijat Sheth and Dr. Rashmi Kant Dave will be interacting with the delegates on 20th of April 2019. This would be a landmark event, forging a greater relationship between ANBAI and NBE for the betterment of postgraduate medical education in our country.

This association was born with the aim to unite the National Board Accredited Institutions to catalyse their energies toward developing better teaching program and to present a credible and united front to solve problems together. The main focus of this association is to improve the camaraderie and the partnership between the National Board Accredited Institutions in working towards excellence. The association is also a forum to encourage innovative ideas in Post Graduate Medical teaching and hence enhance the standards of our students to International level.
The Primary Aims and Objectives of the association are
1. To associate and affiliate all the institutions that are currently conducting DNB courses in India into one credible and united organization.
2. To communicate grievances and problems in one voice to the NBE and to give positive feedback to the NBE. And to maintain / transmit all the rules and regulations of the NB to accredited institutions in an very transparent manner.
3. To safeguard the professional/ and academic interests of its member institutions and DNB students.
4.To hold regular meeting for teaching staff and students.
In the last six years, ANBAI has initiated and supported many initiatives to improve the landscape of the healthcare sector. Apart from several representations made to the government of India on the issue of the NBE governing council, ANBAI has also met with government officials and ministers about the Medical Council of India recommendations regarding teachers’ eligibility qualification and the status of DNB qualifications. ANBAI supported the empowerment of nurses and clinical autonomy for nurse practioners in midwifery. ANBAI also submitted suggestions for the Allied and Healthcare Professional’s Central Council Bill many of which have been accepted, including
The Association of National Board Accredited Institutions (ANBAI)
representation of ANBAI in the Governing Body. ANBAI is also part of the consultation on private sector participation in expansion of Medical Education called by Ministry of Health & Family Welfare on the direction of the PMO.
ANBAI is a member of several alliances and represented on various boards that deal with issues affecting the health sector, and has participated in numerous national conclaves and consultations. ANBAI is a member of the National Steering Committee to review legal and ethical perspectives of healthcare in India. ANBAI is represented on the Task Force for Policy on Public Health, Govt. of Karnataka. After the introduction of entry-level standards by the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Organisations (NABH), ANBAI has been promoting entry-level accreditation, especially among small healthcare Organisations, through the Consortium of Accredited Healthcare Organisations (CAHO). It works closely on various issues with the Association of Healthcare Providers, India (AHPI) including efforts to recover illegal deductions from UTI for their member hospitals, increasing procedure rates under CGHS for 20 procedures, campaigning for logical and transparent pricing, focusing on patient safety, participating in the “Save the Doctor” campaign to equalize the number of under-graduate and post-graduate seats, and negotiating with the government on bonuses and minimum wages in the healthcare sector. In Karnataka, AHPI and ANBAI were instrumental in reducing the electricity tariff for hospitals, removing the luxury tax on hospitals, recovering pending payments for member hospitals from ESIS, and protesting violence against hospital staff.
Today, ANBAI is a network connecting every NBE teaching hospital in India, with several State chapters across the country: in Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh & Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, and West Bengal including the North-Eastern states.

The Association for National Board-Accredited Institutions (ANBAI) is an apex organization
of leading hospitals and medical institutions in India that are accredited by the National Board of Examinations (NBE), which administers the prestigious Diplomate National Board (DNB) and Fellow National Board (FNB) Programmes. Currently, the NBE conducts specialty and super specialty training programs in about 72 disciplines in approximately 524 accredited institutions spread across the country.
NBE and ANBAI have initiated many projects for the betterment of DNB faculty and students. In the last seven years, ANBAI has initiated and supported many initiatives to improve the landscape of the national health sector. It has also liaised with government officials and ministers about the Medical Council of India recommendations regarding teachers eligibility qualification and the status of DNB qualification.
ANBAI has worked very closely with NBE in various areas. We are thankful to NBE for increasing the accreditation cycle to 5 years, involving more NBE institute teachers as examiners and inspectors and for initiating the externship, awarding of adjunct professor titles and formation of specialty boards.
Criteria for hospital accreditation and other innovative ideas are being reviewed and discussed at NBE with inputs from ANBAI to ensure adequate number of quality professionals. ANBAI is also partnering with NBE through member hospitals to help in the online NEET process.
As an ongoing effort for seeking equivalence of DNB degrees with MD, after several meetings with PMO and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare ANBAI received a letter from the Under Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare dated 21st August 2017 that the PMO has instructed the Ministry to request MCI to provide the ministry with amendment proposal in TEQ regulations, deleting the 3 years junior residency requirement and to specifically mention DNB along with MD/MS in academic qualifications for various faculty posts. Further meetings with PMO and Ministry is being planned.
ANBAI governing council members had several meetings with Shri J P Nadda, Hon’ble Minister of Health and Family Welfare and with the Joint
ANBAI Report 2017-2018
Parliamentary committee to discuss the constitution and working of NMC. Shri J P Nadda has promised full support for equivalency of DNB with MD/MS degrees.
ANBAI has also been part of MOHFW & NITI Aayog committees to recommend ways and means to improve PG training in the country and is also exploring the possibility of starting a course in professional ethics along with AHPI & NLSIU.
The NBE faculty have been trained in healthcare communication and quality in health, the two crucial areas which do not have a place in the present medical curriculum. ANBAI is on the NBE-UNESCO Steering Committee on Teaching of Bioethics in PG Medical Education and on the Uniform Learning Resources Committee of the NBE.
Realizing the importance of quality scientific resources (journals/ books etc.) in higher education in healthcare, ANBAI is trying to explore and facilitate a system, which will enable the end users and their institutions access to quality and standard content at a substantially economic price. ANBAI is collaborating with over 103 DNB Institutions and negotiating with 8 leading publishers for E-Journals to try to get significant discounts.
ANBAI had organised Teachers day celebration on 5th September 2017 at NBE Auditorium, New Delhi. On this occasion, awards were given to several eminent teachers and Institutions and 22nd September 2018 in Bangalore. During the Teachers Day 2018, held at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, a White Paper was prepared incorporating best practices of non-health institutes of excellence in the country. This has been presented to NITI Aayog and the Health Minister.
Another initiative under the leadership of the President was the consolidation of the State Chapter Governing Councils of ANBAI. Several state chapters of the Association held academic activities so that ANBAI could continue to work further to realise the objective of serving the society. ANBAI has started publishing its Newsletter.
The partnership between NBE and ANBAI today is exemplary and characterized by collaboration and strength in teamwork for the benefit of the health sector in our
