CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTSBurnaby School District and the Association for Community Education in British Columbia invite you to attend Together for Kids and Communities: A Common Vision, a provincial conference celebrating community schools and community education.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 18On Thursday afternoon, community school coordinators won’t want to miss the interactive pre-conference presentation featuring Molly McCloskey, Managing Director of the ASCD Whole Child Initiative. On Thursday evening, all conference participants are invited to attend her keynote address at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts.

Molly McCloskey, is Managing Director of ASCD’s Whole Child Initiative, a multi-year, cross-organizational effort to ensure that each child, in each school, in each community, is healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged. She has worked at every level of

education from early education through graduate school and has a BA in Psychology (Catholic University of America) and a MEd. in school counseling (UniversityofMaryland).Herworkincludes:outreach to, and engagement of, educators, policymakers, and parents; implementation of ASCD’S Healthy School Communities Program; and development of capacity-building resources and services for school and community improvement.

Since joining ASCD, Molly has presented across the U.S., Canada, Germany, and South Africa and has provided information about school reform, whole child education, and First Amendment issues to the Miami Herald, USA Today, Edutopia, and the Chicago Tribune. She coauthored the ASCD Infobrief on The WholeChild:AFrameworkforEducationinthe21stCentury (2005) and the Fall 2007 update. Molly serves on advisory boards for the Campaign for the Civic Mission of Schools, Coalition of Community Schools, and National School Climate Council and volunteers for the Prince George County Public Schools Comer Steering Committee.

FRIDAY OCTOBER 19Friday’s keynote speaker is Abelardo (Abe) Fernandez, the Deputy Director of the National Center for Community Schools, Children’s Aid

Society, NewYork. A graduate of Brown University and the Institute for Not forProfitManagementatColumbiaUniversity, Abe brings to the table overfifteenyearsofexperienceineducation, community development andnon-profitmanagement.

Since joining the National Centre for Community Schoolsteamin2006,AbeFernandezhasbeenresponsible for managing the operations of the Center. He has provided coaching, training and consultation to community school initiatives throughout North America and has presented at local and national conferences on parent engagement, systemic initiatives, effective supervision and school-community partnership.

Formerly Assistant Director of the CAS Community Schools department, he supervised community schools in the South Bronx – including two start-up schools – and was an Administrative Supervisor and consultant to the department. Prior to joining Children’s Aid, he served as the Director of Youth Services and ran the multi-service Washington Houses Community Center at Union Settlement Association in East Harlem.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 20On Saturday, spend an engaging day with Seattle community developer Jim Diers. He has a passion

for getting people engaged with their communities and in the decisions that affect their lives. He believes that neighbours can generate tremendous power when they come together as a communityandinfluencetheactionsof government, developers and other external forces. They can also mobilize

their own assets – their passions, knowledge, skills and relationships – in support of caring communities, revitalized neighbourhoods and a better world.

For the past 30 years Jim has worked with grassroots community organizations, with the nation’s largest health care cooperative and with the City of Seattle. In 2001, Jim was named Public Employee of the Year by the Municipal League of King County and was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Law from Grinnell College. After leaving the Department of Neighborhoods in 2002, Jim worked for a year as Interim Director of the Delridge Neighborhoods Development Association and for three years as Executive Director of the South Downtown Foundation.

Currently, Jim spends most of his time at the University of Washington, where he teaches courses in architecture and social work and supports community initiatives with faculty and students across all disciplines. He is also on the speaking circuit as a faculty member for the Asset-Based Community Development Institute and is the author of Neighbor Power:BuildingCommunitytheSeattleWay.
