THE SPIRAL TUN\ELSConsidered as among the most notable en-gineering feats i n the world, the SpiralTunnels were constructed by engineers ofCanadian Pacific to reduce the gradient be-tween the Great Divide and Field. Prior totheir construction the gradient was 4.5 percent; i t is now 2.2 per cent.
Going west the track enters the first tunnelunder Cathedral Mountain, 3,206 feet inlength, turns 234 degrees of a circle, and,passing under itself, emerges 48 feet lower.
The track then turns easterly and„ crossing theriver, enters the second tunnel, 2,890 feetlong, under Mount Ogden. Performing asimilar evolution, i t emerges 45 feet lowerand continues westward to Field.
If the train is run in two sections, passengersin one section are able to see the other sec-tion either above them or below them.
