COMMITTEE MEETING

A meeting of the Committee was held in Leiden onJanuary 4, 1984. It was attended by M.E. Stone,Ch. Burchard, J,J.S. Weitenberg, F. Mawet and Ch.Hannick (consultative). Inter alia the following decis-ions were taken:

The committee accepted the recommendation of theSub-Committee on Patron Members and elected Prof.Sir. Harold Bailey and Dr. Sirarpie Der Nersessian asPatron Members (see elsewhere in this Newsletter).

A number of candidates for membership were ap-proved subject to the vote of the next Annual Gen-eral Meeting.

The Committee accepted the invitation of Prof. Dr.Chr. Hannick to hold the Annual Conference for1984 at the University of Trier.

M.E. Stone has taken over the Editorship of theNewsletter.

Steps are to be taken to find a sound financial basisfor AIEA and to expand services to members.

AWARD FOR PROFESSOR FEYDIT

Professor Dr. F. Feydit, distinguished member ofAIEA. was awarded the Order of St. Sahak and St.Mesrop by His Holiness, Vazken I, Catholicos of Allthe Armenians.

The award was made to Professor Feydit on theoccasion of his 75th birthday. in recognition of hisdistinguished contributions to Armenian scholarship.The award was published in an encyclical letter bytheCatholicos which is printed in the journal Ejmiacin,I l - l : (1983). pages 3-4.In the same journal an appraisal of Feydit 's scienticopus was published, as well as a bibliography of hisworks: S. So far such workshops are planned, according to theinitiative of members, as follows: PATRISTICS inDenmark sponsored by Prof. Dr. H. Lehmann:HISTORIOGRAPHY at Trier sponsored by Prof. Dr.Chr. Harinickl GRAMMAIRE COMPAREE ETL'ARMENIEN in Brussels sponsored by Prof. Dr. M.Leroy and Dr. F. Mawet. Others are under negotia-tion at the moment.

Members are encouraged to initiate such workshopsin their own fields of expertise. Guidelines have beendrawn up and are available from the President or t l.reSecretary.

CENTRO STUDI E DOCUMENTAZIONE DELLACULTURA ARMENA

Il Centro Studi e Documentazione della CulturaArmena di Milano è sorto nel 1967, ed è stato ristrut-turato nel 1976, come gruppo di ricercatori facenticapo alla Facoltà di Architettura del Politecnico diMi lano.Cli obbiettivi di t ipo strettamente scientif ico-cultu-rale, sono rivolti ad una conoscenza diretta dei"segni" della cultura Armena, in particolare dell'ar-chitettura, riscontrabili nella vasta area dell'Ar-menia storica (attualmente polit icamente divisa traURSS, Iran, Siria del nord, Turchia). Lo studio èvisto in stretta relazione con le culture limitrofe(Bisanzio, Georgia, Iran, Siria paleocristiana) etenendo conto degli interscambi con la culturaeuropea. In pratica i l lavoro si è svolto (ed è ancora incorso) con una serie sistematica annuale di Missioni distudio (18), sotto il patrocinio ufficiale del Ministerodegli Affari Esteri d'Italia e in collaborazione conI'Accademia delle Scienze e/o le Università locali.Frutto della ricerca sono le pubblicazioni della seriedi monografïe "Documenti di architettura armena"(editi voll. L'IMPORTANCE DE LA DOCUMENTATIONPHOTOGRAPHIQUE DANS LA RECHERCHEARMENOLOGIQUE

INTERET DU CENTRE DE DOCUMENTATION

L'attention portée au cultures minoritaires, la recher-che des racines, ont fait naitre une curiosité et unintérêt tels que les structures actuelles paraissentinadaptées et incapables de répondre à ces diversessollicitations.

La sensibilisation par I'image, son importance grandis-sante n'est plus à démontrer. Son uti l isation n'est plusréservée aux mass media mais concerne aussi larecherche scientifique.

Ainsi le C.D.A. offre outre une documentationclassique (livres, revues, journaux, thèses specialisées)un éventail de reproductions photographiques quirecouvre des thèmes très divers et se met au servicedes chercheurs, journalistes, cinéastes, réalisateursd'émissions télévisées, et aussi du grand public.

CENTRALISATION DE LA DOCUMENTATION

la centralisation est une necessité. Elle évite ladispersion des informations. Elle permet au chercheurde gagner un temps précieux, d'éviter de nombreusesdémarches et déplacements.

Elle met à la disposition des interessés des documentsphotographiques de lieux difficiles d'accès et d'avoirune approche visuelle d'un sujet qu'ils ne connaissentque par l 'écrit.

La centralisation permet aussi de réunir sur un mêmesujet divers types de matériaux. D'autre part lacentralisation ne signifie pas obligatoirement lapossession de tous les documents mais concerneI' information documentaire. Ainsi le Centre doitpouvoir mentionner qu'un document qui n'est pas ensa possession est consultable dans tel l ieu, auprès detel organisme ou individu.

LA RECHERCHE D OCUMEN TAIRE

l-a recherche de documents se fait par rapport auxdemandes exprimées. Elle se fait aussi en regard de larareté, de la diff iculté d'accès, des sujets d'intérêt dumoment ou à venir; i l existe des documents d'au-jourd'hui. de nature très banale, qui deviendrontprécieux dans quelques années.

L'audiovisuel privilégie certains thèmes: archéologie.histoire de l 'art, peinture, costumes, musiques, évé-nements politiques, cérémonies officielles

La recherche docunentaire se fait en direction desinstitutions prestigieuses, comme le couvent de Jerus-salem, les congrégations Mekhitaristes de Vienne et deVenise, du Maténadaran qui doivent fournir I 'essen-tiel de la documentation.

Ces fonds seront complétés par d'autres organismescomme par exemple le Musée de I 'Hermitage à Lénin-grad, des institutions nationales comme la Biblio-thèque Nationale de Paris, celles de I'Institut Catho-lique, de I 'Ecole des Langues Orientales et autres. l lest possible de faire appel aux librairies spécialisées.

Une autre catégorie qui nous parait essentielle estcelle des collectionneurs, ou simples possédants dontles documents ont bien souvent la valeur d'inédits, dematériaux non tombés dans le domaine public.

Le C.D.A. compte beaucoup sur cette dernièrecatégorie qui représente, bien que difficilementestimable. un rapport non négligeable et souventoriginal.

DE POTS PH OTOGRAPHIQU E S

Afin d'assurer la bonne conservation des documentsphotographiques du patrimoine arménien. i l est pos-sible et souhaitable qu'à terme se fassent des dépôtsdans des l ieux conçus à cette intention.

Ii existe en France trois possibil i tés:

- les archives de France- la Bibliothèque Nationale (documents écrits et

photographies)- Fort de Saint Cyr (negatifs seulement)

CLASSEMENT

Il nécessite tout d'abord une standardisation desdocuments. C'est le format 24 x 36 qui est uti l isépour les diapositives tirées de photos, l ivres anciens etautres documents.

Le classement est le premier acte de la recherche etdoit se faire d'une manière rigoureuse et scienti-f ique. Pour réprendre l 'exemple des diapositives unordonancement géographique (nonts de l ieux) estopéré. Un fichier basé sur un thesaurus permet pourun thème donné ou un élément caractéristique (ex:costume, cinéma, voûte. portail, tapis. broderie . . .)de trouver très facilement et en peu de temps les

documents s'y rapportant.

læ classement permet aussi d'avoir une idée plusconcise de 1'étendue de la documentation possédée, etdonc d'orienter ses recherches documentaires afind'en éliminer ou attenuer les faiblesses et les man-ques. Il permet de découvrir des sujets d'étudesnouveaux et de les proposer aux demandeurs.

Tout ce travail est une charge en moins pour leschercheurs et facilite leurs travaux.

LA DIFFUSION

Elle se fait à deux niveaux. D'une part la "documen-tation brute" à savoir la simple diffusion de docu-ments. Pour se faire un projet d'informatisation est encours (prévu fin 84) qui permettra grâce au vidéo-dis-que ou plus vraisemblablement au moyen de disquet-tes très faciles à uti l iser de proposer dans un premierstade un descriptif documentaire à partir de la théma-tique. Ainsi en coordination avec les divers centres dedocumentation arméniens qui existent ou vont secréer de par le monde nous pourrons échanger desinformations sur les fonds possédés, enrichir notredocumentation, tendre à une complémentarité.

A un autre niveau il est possible à partir de la "docu-mentation brute" de coproduire des réalisations quimettraient en commun les efforts des chercheurs,documentalistes, techniciens.

Cela permettra aux scientifiques de passer du stade dela recherche proprement dite à la diffusion publique,chose toujours difficile à réaliser, mais qui peut-êtrefacil i tée par la technique vidéo. Ainsi le C.D.A. aconçu une cassette vidéo sur le thème "Une langue.une nation" qui a permis de rendre très attractifs desexplications et schemas linguistiques difficiles d'accèspour des non spécialistes.

Pour la création d'un tel produit le chercheur estpleinement associé et participe à la fabrication.

conçu par ce dernier et nécessite une démarchescientifique. Le support, par exemple le diaporama enfondu enchaîné, se construit comme un texte avecdes longueurs, des virgules, des points, des interroga-tions, des intonations . .. .

Il s'agit d'un travail d'équipe. Le sujet et le texte sontconçus par les chercheurs, I'apport documentaire estle travail de spécialistes, la conception du produitcelui des techniciens. Cette division des tâches n'ex-clue pas la participation de tous aux divers stades dela conception.

Pour conclure, la documentation photographique estun outil indispensable et profitable à tous ceux qui,quel que soit leur domaine d'activité, ont pour but defaire connaitre et de promouvoir l'art, la culture etI'histoire du peuple arménien. Celà implique en retourpour ces derniers une participation et un apportpersonnel qui permettront un enrichissement et uneplus grande diversif ication de la documentationphotographique.

LE COUVENT DE L'APOTRE SAINT-ELISEE EN ARC'AX

Ce couvent, pratiquement inconnu, se trouve enAzerbeidjan, dans le territoire autonome du Garabag.Son accès est difficile, plusieurs heures de marche àpied en montagne sont nécessaire à partir du villagede Madagiz où se termine la route carrossable.

la légende veut que ce soit le roi d'Albanie Vaè'aganIII qui l'ait fondé à la fin du Ve siècle pour y conser-ver les reliques de I'apôtre Elisée, disciple de saintThaddée et évangélisateur de cette région de I'Armé-nie. En réalité il n'est attesté que beaucoup plus tard,vers 730, quand des moines de Makenoc'vank' vinrents'y réfugier et sur le plan archéologique, les plusanciens bâtiments ne sont certainement pas antérieursau XIIIe siècle. Abandonné à la fin du XIXe siècle, lecouvent rest encore un lieu de pélerinage très fré-quenté par les Arméniens du Garabag.

Le couvent est protégé à I 'ouest, au nord et à I 'est parune muraille enÇore bien conservée et percée de deuxportails (est et ouest); au sud, i l domine par unprécipice le fond d'un étroit vallon. Les bâtimentscultuels s'échelonnent, séparés les uns des autres, dumur nord au bord du ravin, à peu près au milieu deI'aire monastique.

Le groupe principal est constitué par une égliserectangulaire à une nef et abside demi-circulaire quine conserve plus que son extrémité ouest et unepartie de son mur sud; elle était creusée de deuxportes, I 'une au sud I 'autre à I 'ouest; cette dernièredonnant dans le Zamatun. Ce Zamatun, fondé, dit uneinscription, par un certain Xac'atur en 1264 a étédoté d'un clocher en 1323;,il est d'un type architectu-ral peu habituel, la couverture reposant sur des arcsappuyés sur deux piliers libres et deux piliers engagésdans le mur oriental. De nombreuses inscriptionsattestent I 'activité du couvent dans la seconde moitiédu XIIIe siècle sous la prélature de Ter Simeon.Quelques pierres tombales de supérieurs et d'arche-vêques démontrent son importance jusqu'à la fi l duXVIIe siècle.

Au nord de ce groupe se trouvent trois petites chapel-les: une chapelle à deux absides, assez ruinée jouxte lemur nord du couvent; la chapelle Saint-Elisée, datéede 1244, présente un sanctuaire rectangulaire; il enest de même de la chapelle funéraire de Vaë'agan IIIédifiée en I 286 par un certain Hayrapet et devantlaquelle je trouverait la tombe du mélik Adam (Ier ouII ?) de Jraberd.

Au sud du groupe église-Zamatun s'échelonnentquatre chapelles: l'église de la Mère de Dieu, d'assez

grandes dimensions, non datée; elle comporte une nefvoûtée en berceau et une double abside; la chapelledu Saint-Précurseur, probablement antérieure à l28lsi I'on en croit une inscription mutilée; la chapelleSaint-Serge, construite en 1514 par les vardapetsAiak'el et Mat'eos; la chapelle du Saint-Signe, minus-cule édifice à sanctuaire rectansulaire.

Les bâtiments monastiques sont plus ou moins bienconservés. A I'est du chevet des chapelles du groupesud on voit les ruines de locaux d'habitation et au sudde ces derniers, près du ravin les ruines d'un réfec-toire. Tout à fait à l'angle sud-est du couvent onremarque un édifice encore bien conservé (bâti surune éminence) qui d'après la tradition serait I 'ancien-ne résidence du vardapet Mahrasan, héros du Garabag.Enfin à I'angle nord-est se trouvent des bâtimentsvoûtés qui devaient servir d'écuries ou de bergerie.

Le couvent Saint-Elisée est intéressant à plusieurstitres. D'abord, i l nous l ivre presque intact un aspectd'une communauté du bas moyen âge et du début destemps modernes ce qui est fort rare dans le reste deI'Arménie et ne se voit guère des temps modernes cequi est fort rare dans le reste de I'Arménie et ne sevoit guère qu'en Arc'ax (comme à Dadivank'. parexemple). Sur le plan architectural on n'y voit pas demonuments prestigieux; les églises sont petites, lematériau grossier (appareii moyen lié au mortier).Tout cela suggère la rnodestie des revenus écclésias-tiques, la pénurie d'architectes et de maitre d'oeuvrede qualité. Par contre la multiplicité des chapellestémoigne de la ferveur religieuse pour ce couvent. Onnotera aussi deux caractères typologiques intéres-sants: la double abside de chapelles à une nef etsurtout la présence de trois chapelles à sanctuairerectangulaire, disposition rare en Arménie (mais quin'est pas cependant exceptionnelle au Arc'ax). Enfinla résidence abbatialle signalée plus l-raut conseryeplusieurs éléments de grand intérêt (chaminée,fenêtres en meurtrières, etc. . . . .).

Dans cette pauvre communauté i l ne fallait pass'attendre à trouver de décor sculpté de grandequalité. Le portail de l'église principale donnant dansle Zamatun est orné d'un entrelacs à palmettes sur-monté d'un masque humainl la façade ouest del'église de la Mère de Dieu est ornée d'un médail lonsculpté d'un cavalier. Enfin, çà et là des xaè'k'ars sontencastrés dans les murs des chapelles.

COLLEGIO ARMENO MOORAAT-RAPHAELSUMMER COURSES

The Direction of the Armenian College Moorat-Ra-phael, under the patronage and with the collaborationof the Armenian Academy of San Lazzaro of theMekhitarist Fathers, has organized courses in Armen-ian language and civilization that will take place inAugust 1984.

The courses ar open to all those, who are interested inlearning Armenian or perfecting their knowledgeof the Armenian language and culture.

The courses will start on the lst of August and willend on the 30th. They will be distributed on threelevels: 1)Beginners; 2) Middle; 3) Advanced.

Læssons will be held on the following subjects: a)I-anguage: Modern and Classical Armenian;b) Litera-ture: c) History and Art .

Visiting teachers will give special lectures in the fieldsof Armenian language and culture. Visits to themonuments and museums of Venice as well as someexcursions will also take place.

Lodging and food will be provided by the College.

Places are limited. All those interested should send acurriculum vitae and and $US 100 to C/C No.819.928 of "Banca Nazionale del Lavoro Venezia".

The total fee for lodging and tuition fee is $US 600.

The faculty includes F. Nerses der Nersessian, F.Levon Zekiyan, F. Haroutiun Bezdikian, BaykarSivazliyan and Ani Totoyan.

3. J.J.S. Weitenberg and M.E. Stone have conductedfirst experiments (successful) in reading Armenianwith a Kurzweil optical scanner. This work willcont inue in the summer.
