-On June 8th 1999, Franklin was involved in a motor vehicle accident where he severed his C-6 vertebrae
-He was diagnosed
with C-6 quadriplegia.
-Also known as tetraplegia: “ the paralysis of four limbs”
-Paralysis caused by illness or injury
-Results in the partial or total loss of use in their limbs and torso.
-Full head and neck movement with good muscle strength.
-Good shoulder movement and elbow flexion, but no elbow extension
-Active wrist extension which permits tenodesis
-This can allow someone with active wrist extension (C6) to use their tenodesis to achieve grasp
-Tenodesis is the natural tendency of the fingers to curl or flex when the wrist is extended.
-This is because the finger flexor muscles are actually in the forearm, and bending the wrist back shortens these tendons, making the fingers curl.
