10:00 a.m. What’s It Like to Fly on theSpace Shuttle?, Northwood Room

Jay Buckey will narrate a video and take questions about his missionaboard the Space Shuttle Columbia. Jay was a member of the crewon the 16-day STS-90 Neurolab flight in 1998. The 7-member crewserved as both experiment subjects and operators for 26 individuallife science experiments focusing on the effects of microgravity onthe brain and nervous system. The STS-90 flight orbited the Earth256 times, covered 6.3 million miles, and logged over 381 hours inspace. The mission focused on the most complex and leastunderstood part of the human body - the nervous system. Theexperiments explored five key areas affected by weightlessness:blood pressure control, balance, sleep, nervous system developmentand the blending of vision with balance and position sense. Thevideo shows the launch, landing and what it’s like to live and workin space.

1:00 p.m. Science Seminar, Part I: Climate Changes - Real Issues and Factors You Don’t Hear About, Northwood Room

Introducing the Science Seminar: a novel RG activity designed tobe interesting, informative and (most especially) fun! This four-hour quasi-structured seminar is designed to provide a series ofscience-related speakers, an opportunity for questions and answerson the material presented, and an open forum to express ideas,theories or opinions related to the topics. In Part I, Joe D’Aleo willshow that although climate change is real and man plays some role,there are real questions about the degree at which it has changedand how much natural variability is a factor. In the talk, he will:address all the issues now being exposed about the accuracy of rawand adjusted climate station data, show how changes are cyclical innature and how the sun and the oceans correlate far better thangreenhouse gases with these changes, show how these same factorscontrol the changes in our icecaps and glaciers, and present a very

There will be a warm-up puzzle (which will not count for the tournament) before tournamentplay begins. The opening round consists of three standard (9x9)Sudoku puzzles. They may be completed in any order, and playersare permitted to go back and forth between puzzles. The threefastest players to correctly finish the three puzzles move on to thefinals, which occurs at 7:00 p.m. in Hospitality.

How is the human brain like a computer, and how is it different?Recent science fiction, especially cyberpunk, often treats the humanbrain like a computer, and consciousness like software. What isreasonable about this idea, and what is unreasonable? Wil Howittwill try to separate science fact from fantasy - with an introductionto the fledgling science of neuroinformatics, which combinesbiological neurophysics with computational information theory.

Nanotechnology is a bit like a pun. You may have to think about itmore than once before you understand it. Frank Dolinar has beenthinking about nanotech for 20 years. As the results of researchaccrue and make their way into the market, Frank has found himselfcontinuously challenged to understand the latest news and itsimplications. This presentation will introduce you to basic conceptsand help you understand nanotech’s growing capabilities. It willlook at nanotech’s promise, examine its risks, and discuss possibleeffects upon our daily lives. The future is coming sooner than youthink.

Yes, we’re serious! For some strange, twisted reason, this simplechild’s game has become a favorite in bars and other establishmentsover the past few years, so we figured: why not continue with thestrange and twisted reasoning...and bring it to Mensa? There arethree hand gestures involved: rock (closed fist), paper (open hand,either facing up or facing down), and scissors (index and middlefingers extended). The objective is to select a gesture which defeatsthat of the opponent: rock smashes scissors, paper covers rock,and scissors cut paper. Each round of this tournament will run onthe best-of-three system.

Curry Bartlett has spent the last twodecades working in, managing thesecurity for, and developing techniquesto protect networked computerenvironments. Curry has presentedat a NASA computer securityconference and at the NationalInformation Systems SecurityConference, and has assisted criminalinvestigators. He was part of the DEC/Compaq/HP Tru64 UNIX OperatingSystem Security Group. Mostlyrecently Curry has been part of a groupsetting up a last mile ISP in Mason,NH.

Dr. Terry Bennett has been a medicaldoctor for over 43 years and haspracticed not only in many states herein America but also in numerousforeign countries including SaudiArabia, and Morocco. Throughout itall he has been deeply involved inhealth care programs – designing,developing, funding, recruiting,educating and directing numerousprograms for most African countriesand governments. In the US he’sworked medicine in such uniqueenvironments as state prisons,hospitals for the criminally insane andaddiction centers. So he’s no strangerto the challenges of providing qualityyet affordable health care to commonand affluent people alike! Verypolitically active, he was a candidatefor a US Senate seat in 1992 and iscurrently actively engaged in litigationover physician’s rights and limits vs.the New Hampshire Medical Board.Most recently he was vocally critical

of the role and shortcomings of ourhealth care system in LeelandEisenberg’s recent hostage incident atHillary Clinton’s campaign office inRochester, New Hampshire.

Dr. Terry Bennett has served in thePeace Corps, has served the under-privileged in our country and othersand has established scholarshipprograms and other philanthropicwork through his long, interesting andfruitful career. He currently practicesin Rochester, New Hampshire at theClinic on the Common.

Jay Buckey, M.D. is a professor ofmedicine and an adjunct professor ofengineering at Dartmouth College. Inaddition to caring for patients anddirecting a research lab, he has taughtcourses on physiology, spaceexploration, and homeland security atDartmouth. He earned a B.S. inelectrical engineering from CornellUniversity and an M.D. from CornellMedical School. After his internship,he worked as a physician specializingin space research. He also served asa Major in the U.S. Air Force Reservefor eight years; as a flight surgeonwith the 457th Tactical FighterSquadron in Fort Worth, TX, he flewin the back seat of F-4 and F-16aircraft. In 1998, Jay flew as a PayloadSpecialist Astronaut on the STS-90Neurolab mission. He and hiscrewmates completed 256 orbits of theEarth and logged 6.3 million milesaboard the Space Shuttle Columbia.

Joe D’Aleo has over three decades ofexperience as a meteorologist andclimatologist. Joe is a graduate ofthe University of Wisconsin (BS, MSMeteorology) and did his doctoralstudies in Meteorology at NYU. Joewas a Professor of Meteorology for 6years at Lyndon State College (inVermont) and from 1981 to 1988 wasa co-founder and the first Director ofMeteorology at the cable TV WeatherChannel.

From 1989 to 2004, Joe was ChiefMeteorologist at WSI and Senior Editorand “Dr Dewpoint” for WSI’s popularIntellicast.com web site.

Joe has considerable mediaexperience, having been weatherproducer for WCBS TV and radio inNew York City from 1971-1974, andthe CBS television network showEnergy in 1973. He was a weatherproducer for ABC’s Good MorningAmerica from 1980-1981 whiledesigning The Weather Channel withJohn Coleman, TV meteorologist atGMA. While at WSI, Joe frequentlyappeared on network interviews forABC Discovery, ABC, CNN, and manylocal network affiliates oftenaddressing factors related to severeweather, seasonal snowfall, andclimate change.

Joe is a Certified ConsultantMeteorologist and was elected a Fellowof the American MeteorologicalSociety. He has served as chairmanof the American MeteorologicalSociety’s Committee on WeatherAnalysis and Forecasting, and haschaired or co-chaired several national

conferences. Joe is currently aCouncilor for the AMS.

Joe is currently Executive Directorof Icecap, an organization and websitedevoted to climate change issues(http://icecap.us).

He has authored and presented anumber of papers as well as publisheda book focused on how research intoENSO and other atmospheric andoceanic phenomena has made skillfulseasonal and even decadal forecastspossible. Mr. D’Aleo has also authoredmany articles and made numerouspresentations on the roles cycles inthe sun and oceans have played inclimate change.

Frank Dolinar began following thedevelopment of nanotechnology in1986 after reading Engines ofCreation, K. Eric Drexler’s first book.Since 1992, he has givenpresentations on nanotechnology forclasses at Michigan State University,corporate seminars, business groups,technical groups and over the lastyear-and-a-half for numerous MensaRGs. He writes essays examining thehistory, current topics, trends, andimplications of various technologies,including nanotechnology. He is agraduate of Lyman Briggs College atMichigan State University.

Frank is the President ofnanoSteps of East Lansing, Michigan;a consultant for the Firefly ConsultingGroup of Lexington, Kentucky; and asoftware developer for the MichiganHouse of Representatives.

Carmelina Fauteaux is a fine artistand art teacher. She holds both BFAand MAT degrees. While attendingPlymouth State University, AnnetteMitchell introduced her to foam platesas a new artistic medium. Carmelinafell in love with foam plate printing;she believes everybody has thepotential to create art.

Joseph “Java Joe” Haber has beenplaying poker for over 30 years. InFebruary, 2006 he decided to take thenext step in improving his game byenrolling in the World Poker Tour BootCamp to learn how to play tournamentno-limit poker.

Wil Howitt is a doctor of computerscience and electrical engineering,specializing in physical acoustics andpsychoacoustics. He works at MIT andBU, developing human auditory systemmodels and speech recognitionsystems. He also enjoys drumming,dancing, and playing didjeridu andother rhythmic instruments. Heteaches Taoist martial arts, fenceswith a German longsword, and looksaround a lot.

Tchipakkan is an artist, writer, healerand soothsayer, author of DivineCookies, and the Rune article seriesin The Blessed Bee Pagan FamilyMagazine. She practices and teachesRuneValdr and Reiki, huna healing,herbalism, and soothsaying withrunes, palmistry, tarot, and othersystems.
