• A time-space compression due to instantaneous electronic communications that removes the constraints of distance and time on social interactions.
• Material aspect such as the flows of trade, capital and people across the globe, facilitated by different kinds of infrastructure such as transport or banking systems and trade rules

Globalisation has encouraged:
• Relocation of industry
• Population movements nto rapidly growing cities
• Constantly increasing levels of consumption
• Increased levels of emissions of effluents and waste gases.
Globalisation can result in:
• The opening up of markets
• Sharing of environmental knowledge
• Increased efficiencies that can lead to reduced pollution

Emission levels
• The worlds civil airline industry is estimated to contribute to global CO2 emissions by around 2%.
• Due to the fact that airlines frequently fly close to or in the stratosphere and deposits its emissions directly into stratospheric layers, its emissions contributes greater to the climate change than if these were emitted at ground level.
• In the EU emissions from civil aviation increased by 87% between 1990 and 2006.
Caused by the airline industry

“Each man is locked into a system that compels him to increase his herd without limit – in a world that is limited.
Ruin is the destination toward which all men rush, each pursuing his own best interest in a society that believes in the freedom of the commons.
Freedom in a commons brings ruin to all.”
(Hardin, 1968: p. 1244)

Using voluntary means of reducing global emissions have failed to date
• Using voluntary means of reducing global emissions have failed to date.
• UN environment conferences of 1972, 1992 and 2002 have failed in obtaining commitment for the reduction of emissions.
• The Kyoto Protocol in 1997 also failed following the withdrawal of countries like the US and Australia.
• Global CO2 emissions increased by almost 30% between 1997 and 2011.
![Page 12: Assignment one presentation - candidate number 436550](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081403/554c39a0b4c90530668b4691/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
The introduction of legally binding emissions trading system (ETS) in Europe
• The European Union is leading the way by introducing ETS in the EU from 2020.
• It is yhe first and biggest international system for trading greenhouse gas emission allowances.
• 11,000 power stations and industrial plants as well as airlines flying to, from and within the EU are included.
• EU's greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by 21% by 2020 and 43% lower by 2030 through the scheme.

• Negative impacts of globalisation is increasing levels of global pollution.
• The expansive growth of global airline traffic is projected to continue.
• The introduction of legally binding emissions trading system (ETS) in Europe is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 43% by 2030.
• Improvements achieved through voluntary means includes the greening of operations such as sustainable bio fuel projects and carbon neutral initiatives such as Masdar City.
