• Draught preventing screen

- To counteract the high door

- Reduces draught at reception

- Can save up to:

Case Year round gas usage due to draught

gas savings due to draught block

CO2 emissions avoided in one year

CO2 emissions avoided in 15 years

Cost savings every year

Cost savings in 15 years

• Courtyard covering

- Cover the inner courtyard with glazed roofs reduce energy use

- used often for historic buildings preserves historic character

- Huge energy savings

- Can save up to:

Case Year round gas usage through courtyard facing facades

gas savings due to courtyard covering

CO2 emissions avoided in one year

CO2 emissions avoided in 20 years

• Secondary Glazing

- Must be reversible in order to protect the significance of the building

- Need a sufficient gap (at least 200 mm) between the two sheet of glass

- If not possible to have a sufficient gap, one should consider double glazing (see next slide)

- Some systems can be removed easily in summer in order to take advantages of passive solar gain

Page 10: Assignment Current Status Handbook Change proposals – Technical – Installation – Behavioural – Research Project Legal aspects Contents.

• Double glazing - Usually too tick to fit into existing timber window frame

- But now new products that are thinner but MORE expensive

- Need a cost-efficient analysis

Page 11: Assignment Current Status Handbook Change proposals – Technical – Installation – Behavioural – Research Project Legal aspects Contents.

• Film inside the window

- Easy step

- Less efficient than secondary and double glazing

- Different kind of films depending on the orientation of the windows

- Use it when secondary and double glazing not possible

Installation changes

Page 14: Assignment Current Status Handbook Change proposals – Technical – Installation – Behavioural – Research Project Legal aspects Contents.

• Solar panels

- Usually used for hot water

- BUT technically can be used for heating the building Need bigger roof area

- Can be installed on the extra building? in the big parking of GG 90-62?

Page 15: Assignment Current Status Handbook Change proposals – Technical – Installation – Behavioural – Research Project Legal aspects Contents.

• Solar photovoltaic

- Cost much more than solar panels

- Produce about half as much energy as solar panels

- But this is electrical energy

- Can be installed on extra building? In the big parking of GG 90-92?

Electricity decision tree

Page 17: Assignment Current Status Handbook Change proposals – Technical – Installation – Behavioural – Research Project Legal aspects Contents.

• Insulation improvements on the floor

-Improvement on the fabric of the building -> demand of energy lowers

-Generally cost-effective

-Protecting air circulation & natural materials

Page 18: Assignment Current Status Handbook Change proposals – Technical – Installation – Behavioural – Research Project Legal aspects Contents.

• CHP units

-Cogeneration or combined heat and power

-Creating energy, by-product heat

-Energy & heat need to be levelled

-Units: efficient -> lower energy & carbon emissions

• Infrared light switches

- in areas that are not used frequently : bathrooms, stairways, conference rooms and janitor storage/closets.

- One specific type of passive infrared switches (WSP250): • a built-in sensor holds the lights off when natural light

levels are above the preset level• Result (according to the producer of WSP250): 60%

energy savings

• Recycled paper for printers

- fixed paper provider of the UM: Océ Business Services- propose the paper provider the idea of a pilot project:

• Introducing one printer in each faculty which uses exclusively recycled paper

• If this pilot project is successful, the university could start further negotiations about having all printers and copy machines print on recycled paper.

• Water taps– Faucet aerators: mix air into the water stream

without affecting the water pressure– not expensive, easy to install, can use up to 50% less

water, does not sacrifice comfort – 30 old taps in GG 90-92

• Green Roof– partially or completely covered with vegetation or soil

cut heating cost, reduce water run-off, increases the roofs life span

– at additional building/ 72 “Oostgevel buitenberging” ?

Behavioural aspects

Page 23: Assignment Current Status Handbook Change proposals – Technical – Installation – Behavioural – Research Project Legal aspects Contents.

• Online questionnaire– climate conditions at GG90-92– energy consumption-related behaviour– attitudes on saving energyonly 22 responses

• Behaviour change: difficult due to trade-offs in time, cost, comfort

Page 24: Assignment Current Status Handbook Change proposals – Technical – Installation – Behavioural – Research Project Legal aspects Contents.

• Education programs• Inform employees about changes• Social marketing strategies

– paper note, (informative) poster• Feedback technologies

– real time feedback – the Serious Game (Green My Place)

• Moving an organization towards sustainability is an on-going process & takes time!

• Mistakes that should be avoided

1. No sense of urgency2. No Powerful Guiding coalition3. Lacking a vision4. Not communicating the vision5. Not removing obstacles to the vision6. Not creating short term wins7. Declare victory too soon8. Not anchoring changes in the corporate culture

Research project

Page 27: Assignment Current Status Handbook Change proposals – Technical – Installation – Behavioural – Research Project Legal aspects Contents.

• Look at influence of infrared heating system on concentration/learning performance

• Mutual benefit

Legal aspects

Page 29: Assignment Current Status Handbook Change proposals – Technical – Installation – Behavioural – Research Project Legal aspects Contents.

• When do you need an environmental permit?

- Depend what kind of changes you want to do (see website)

- NO for regular (low) maintenance and renovations to non-monumental parts (since 1 January 2012)

Page 30: Assignment Current Status Handbook Change proposals – Technical – Installation – Behavioural – Research Project Legal aspects Contents.

• What is the procedure when you need an environmental permit?

- You can apply online

- Extensive procedure = when you need to demolish partially or completely something

- Regular procedure = Rest

Page 31: Assignment Current Status Handbook Change proposals – Technical – Installation – Behavioural – Research Project Legal aspects Contents.

• Costs- Depends on the construction costs

- Construction costs = 50.000 or less 17 for each 500 but no less than 131

- Construction costs = between 50.000 and 250.000 1.704 + 16,21 for each 500 above 50.000

- Construction costs = between 250.000 and 500.000 8.185 + 15, 50 for each 500 above 50.000
