Themes

• In parts of the novel, one theme seemed to come up quite a bit. The theme that I thought was the most representative of this book is defiance. The revolution was what it was because some slaves decided to go against what they were supposed to do and fight for what is right.

Events

No other topic in this book is more important than the entire event that makes up the novel. The Haitian Revolution started in 1791 and ended in 1804. This revolution sparked in Saint-Domingue when a group of slaves rebelled. This rebellion was just about the only successful one in achieving independence.

Personalities

One personality that I noticed while doing my research in this book was that the slave owners actually became very afraid of the slaves. The slave owners knew that if the slaves figured out how to have a successful uprising that they would then be in a lot of trouble. The slave owners were very fearful that the slaves would find out about other uprisings and then act based upon them.
