Media Research on Redneck and Backwoods Horror movies:

Movie No.1: Texas chainsaw massacre (2013 remake).

Things I learned:

Teenagers are the victims.

Its set out in the countryside away from urban areas and people.

House is full of hidden secrets, which makes the audience more involved

with the movie.

The victims do not know the area, indicating the audience that they can

feel insecure and unsafe.

The main characters are on holiday

The Antagonists investigate builds tension and shows danger to the audience.

Page 2: Assign 6: Individual Research (Steven - redneck and backwoods)

This shows how isolated the characters are reducing the amount of hope of them escaping

This shows that the only way the antagonists can only hide and run away from the protagonist because

they haven't got anything to fight back with.

2nd Movie: Hills have Eyes ( 1 and 2)

Page 3: Assign 6: Individual Research (Steven - redneck and backwoods)

What I Have learnt:

The scenes are abandoned

There is only a small amount of people throughout the movie

The creatures stay mostly in the shadows so where they cant be

seen

they kidnap people slowly so its less noticeable and builds tention

in the plot.

Showing flashbacks of the past shows that in modern day that the mutated creatures could still be there.

Page 4: Assign 6: Individual Research (Steven - redneck and backwoods)

This scene shows how isolated the people get stuck in and also shows the loneliness of the setting.

having one of the creatures turn around to show their face can give information to the audience about

what happened to them and can also inform them of the danger the people are in by the sudden

reaction.

Movie 3: Dying Breed

Page 5: Assign 6: Individual Research (Steven - redneck and backwoods)

What I learnt:

the townsfolk don’t give a lot away to the tourists

There are different settings that are abandoned or have people living there.

The townsfolk don’t like people coming and exploring their 'territory'

the Close up of this woman shows that things aren't right when they're in the town.

Page 6: Assign 6: Individual Research (Steven - redneck and backwoods)

when the protagonist shows the shackles it can show the audience that the tourists are not welome an

they're going to be taken as prisoners.

showing this short cut in the trailer can show the audience that the townsfolk aren't 'normal' and can

indicate to the audience that there is danger and killing in this movie.

Movie 4: Eden Lake

What I have learnt in this movie:

the youth is represented negatively in this movie

Its abandoned with only a few people close by

the victims are people that don’t know the area

The setting at night can also add more danger to the movie and can add danger to it.

Page 8: Assign 6: Individual Research (Steven - redneck and backwoods)

having a close up of the antagonist with a fearsome facial expression can show some retaliation towards

the protagonists.

Page 9: Assign 6: Individual Research (Steven - redneck and backwoods)

With the close up of the sat nav saying 'turn around' foreshadows that something bad is going to

happen.

Movie 5: Deliverance

What I have learnt:

the setting is abandoned apart from a small group of people

The antagonists try to escape back to civilization

they get hunted down by the protagonists.

Page 10: Assign 6: Individual Research (Steven - redneck and backwoods)

The longshot shows danger and also shows that the two men are in the middle of no where.

Page 11: Assign 6: Individual Research (Steven - redneck and backwoods)

having a man armed with a weapon indicates to the audience that there is danger in the movie.

Page 12: Assign 6: Individual Research (Steven - redneck and backwoods)

showing the antagonists covering up a body shows that there is some secrecy involved during the film.

Movie 6: southern comfort

what I've learnt:

its about survival of the fittest

happens deep inside a forest away from civilization

violence builds throughout movie.

Page 13: Assign 6: Individual Research (Steven - redneck and backwoods)

guns are used in this film to show violence and danger

Page 14: Assign 6: Individual Research (Steven - redneck and backwoods)

the man drawing blood on his chest indicates some religious aspect to the film.

Page 15: Assign 6: Individual Research (Steven - redneck and backwoods)

the men running shows that they are being chased by some form of danger and trying to get away from

harm.

Movie 7: Wolf creek

What I've learnt:

its set in the middle of nowhere shows isolation

there's a small cast in the film shows helplessness

set at night to increase the tension and the amount of danger

having an older character with younger teenagers balances the representation of both ages.

Page 16: Assign 6: Individual Research (Steven - redneck and backwoods)

showing a party full of teenagers shows how naïve and juvanile they are. this can show how defenceless

they are.

Page 17: Assign 6: Individual Research (Steven - redneck and backwoods)

showing the scene from this angle shows how abandoned the antagonists are and shows how far away

they are from safety.

Page 18: Assign 6: Individual Research (Steven - redneck and backwoods)

showing the woman on a long and empty road can give the audience the clues of being alone and

helpless.
