BUTTONHOLES

Buttonholes are holes in fabric that are pairedwith functional buttons (as opposed todecorative buttons) that serve as fasteners.Buttonholes may be either made by handsewing or automated by a sewing machine. Abuttonhole may be replaced by a loop of cloth or rope, such as in a Mandarin button.



HISTORYButtonholes for fastening or closing clothingwith buttons appeared first in Germany inthe 13th century. They soon became

widespread with the rise of snug-fittinggarments in 13th- and 14th-century Europe.



ASPECT

Buttonholes often have a bar at either end.This is a row of perpendicular hand or machine stitching to reinforce the ends of a

buttonhole.Traditionally, men's clothing buttonholesare on the left side, and women's clothingbuttonholes are on the right.



HOW TO MAKE BUTTONHOLES

Threadssmall, sharp scissors



Step 1

Mark the placement of your buttonholes on thegarment fabric. See "How to Cut Out and MarkPattern Pieces on Fabric" for details. Your sewingpattern should indicate buttonhole length andposition.

Step 2Make sure that the buttonhole is the correct length for your button. The length of your buttonhole shouldequal the diameter of the button plus the buttonheight.



Step 5Sew down the left side of the buttonhole marking.

Lift the presser foot and pivot the fabric 180degrees.Step 6

Lower the presser foot and double the stitchwidth. Hold the fabric firmly so it will not move andlet the machine take a few side-to-side stitches.Return the stitch width to its prior setting.

Step 7Repeat Step 5 and 6

Step 8Cut the buttonhole open with a small pair of verysharp scissors. Take care not to cut into any of your stitching.



TYPES OF BUTTONHOLES

Hand stitchingAplain buttonhole , by far the most common type. Inplain buttonholes, the raw (cut) edges of the textile arefinished with thread in very closely spaced stitches (if made by hand, often the buttonhole stitch). When

stitched by hand, a slit is made in the fabric first andthe result is called a worked buttonhole .

Machined stitchingSewing machines offer various levels of automation tocreating plain buttonholes. When made by machine,the slit between the sides of the buttonhole is openedafter the stiching is completed.



Am achine- m ade buttonhole is usually sewn withtwo parallel rows of machine sewing in a narrowzig-zag stitch, with the ends finished in a broader zig-zag stitch. (One of the first automatic buttonholemachines was invented by Henry Alonzo House in1862.)Abound buttonhole , which has its raw edges

encased by pieces of fabric or trim instead of stitches.Akeyhole buttonhole is a special case of athread-finished buttonhole that is normally machine-made due to the difficulty of achieving it by handworking. It is characterized by a round hole at theend of the slit to accommodate the button's shankwithout distorting the fabric.Keyhole buttonholes are most often found ontailored coats and jackets.



BUTTONHOLE SEWING

MACHINEIn a buttonhole sewing machine, a sewing mechanismand a feed bracket are controlled to form a buttonholedefined by settings, such as zigzag stitch length, zigzag

pitch, bar-tack length, bar-tack pitch, and cutter space.The buttonhole can be set on the operation panel andchanged to various shapes by changing the abovesettings. In particular, the left and right zigzag stitchwidths can be set differently, and the front and rear bar-tack lengths can be also set differently. Thus, thebalance of the buttonhole can be finely adjusted.
