Evidenced Aligned Assessments- VERSION 4 (June 2020) Pre-Foundation – Year 6
The assessments selected met the following criteria:
• Research-aligned with science of reading • Appropriate for a teacher to administer with multiple students (individually, in groups or as a whole class). We did not include
assessments that take over 30 minutes per student to administer, unless they could be administered as a group or whole class.
• Free. We only included paid assessments if we believed there wasn’t something of the same quality available for free.

ReadingAs shown by the Simple View of Reading (Gough & Tumner, 1986), learning to read requires two abilities – correctly identifying words (decoding) and understanding their meaning (comprehension). Scarborough’s Reading Rope illustrates that there are a number of strands woven in the skill of fluent reading. In emergent readers, it is important that these strands are taught and assessed as separate areas.
An extensive body of research shows that there are five main components of reading, in addition to a strong foundation of oral language:
• Phonemic Awareness • Phonics • Comprehension • Vocabulary • Fluency
Without automatisation of basic decoding and word recognition skills, reading comprehension is hindered. Research demonstrates that fluency is largely predictive of reading comprehension (O’Connor et.al, 2002). The rate required for basic comprehension is around 90–100 words per minute- this is typically achieved around the end of year 2 (Armbruster et al, 2001). Once some automaticity is achieved, reading comprehension becomes a teaching focus.
