Entry Level- Essential Question: How do countries around the world celebrate Halloween similarly and differently from the American tradition?

Before assignment begins: Students will complete a quick write and write about their prior

knowledge about different Halloween traditions celebrated around the world.

Formative Assessment-Students will research on the internet and provide evidence for their answers.

Tasks to be completed: Students will complete a quiz about how each country

celebrates Halloween. Students will complete a quick write of what they have learned

so far in the lesson about how Halloween is celebrated around the world compared to the American tradition.

I will hold a discussion in class once a week. I will ask students what they have learned so far. I will ask them questions about how each country celebrates Halloween differently than others.

I will have students create flashcards about different themes and traditions of Halloween for each country.

Summative Assessment-After all the research and tasks are completed during the formative assessment:

Students will be given a multiple choice question test asking them about each of the fourteen countries that I had them learn about. They will be tested on how each country celebrates Halloween differently and what is the significance behind each country’s beliefs about Halloween.

Students will present their poster board to the class. They will

present their board with their group.

Summary:

Students will be asked at the beginning of the class about their prior knowledge about different Halloween traditions celebrated around the world. They will be given a quick write about their prior knowledge. Some students may not have prior knowledge about different countries. They will freely express their thoughts. I will monitor my students by assessing what they have learned throughout the lesson. They will be given a quiz and a quick write. I will hold a group discussion once a week asking what they have learned so far. Group discussions will allow individual voices to be heard and students can learn from one another. Students will also be expected to create flashcards on key ideas and themes. Flashcards will help refresh their memory of important ideas and terms. Students will take a final exam at the end of the lesson. This final exam will test their knowledge about each individual country they researched about. Students will also present their poster boards in their groups in the class. The question board must consist of questions to ask to the class about Halloween. Proper and cited evidence must be presented and detailed on the poster board. I would like to see students engage with one another on an intellectual level sharing what they have researched and learned.
