Business Case to Migrate Your On-Premise OBIEE to OAC BI
Business Case Points for Migrating to OAC BI
6
More Than OBIEE
• Receives new features first
• Future Oracle direction
• Data Visualization• Mobile BI: Day by
Day Analytics and Synopsis
• This is not BICS rebranded
Reduce Infrastructure Costs
• Less hardware to buy
• Less hardware to maintain
• Upgrade process is streamlined and simplified
• Migrating between environments is simplified
Flexibility and Security
• Immediate availability of hardware
• Scalable platform for future expansion
• Backed by Oracle security to stay on top of new threats
• Oracle guaranteed system availability
Functional Comparison Between OBIEE and OAC BI
7
Only with OAC BI- PBCS and Essbase
Cloud as a source- Data Visualization
included- Machine Learning- Data Sync for ETL- Mobile Apps: Day by Day
and Synopsis integration
Only with OBIEE- Scorecard and Strategy
Management- Oracle BI Mobile App- Using BI Delivers to seed
cache for performance
Dashboard Analytics are identical for traditional use: Analysis, BI Pub, and Delivers

OAC Offers Far More than the Old BICS Solution
● Oracle Analytics Cloud is the future roadmap of Oracle BI● OAC, a Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) environment vs. the
BICS Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), provides the following: – Access to underlying Operating System– Ability to change/tune parameters as required– Full set of features that BICS did not, including BI Publisher, BI
Delivers, and Essbase as a source
● OAC directly supports the full metadata model of OBIEE (known as the RPD)
9
OBIEE Version Migration Paths and Considerations
OAC Migration Path and Pre-Check● Customers on OBIEE 11.1.1.7.x+ can migrate to Oracle Analytics Cloud
– Pre-check also included validating items such as database compatibility– Earlier versions will require the interim upgrade
● Customers using BICS can also migrate to Oracle Analytics Cloud● A pre-check process should be performed to assess compatibility:
– Identify third-party software, such as a security product, and if it has been certified by Oracle for compatibility with OAC
– Check for OBIEE features not supported in OAC, such as Scorecard● Quantify artifacts to be migrated, and the effort required
– Assess BI Publisher and “iBot” BI Deliver usage– Assess security model and plan approach to replicate
11
Sizing an OAC Environment
Defining and Sizing an OAC Instance● OAC Instance:
– A virtual machine running a specific operating system with client-specified CPU and memory resources
– Defined by its shape, where a shape identifies the number of CPUs and RAM available to the instance
● Instance Sizing – requires assessing typical usage parameters:– Number of concurrent users and their activity– Database size for any desired cloud storage– Data volumes for detailed queries that could be run
● OAC Hardware Sizing:– Measured in OCPU (Oracle’s CPU)– One OCPU equals two virtual processors
13
OAC Shapes● Shape – a resource profile that specifies OAC Instance allocations:
– Number of OCPUs– Amount of memory– General Purpose and High Memory Shapes available
● OCPU– Defined as the CPU capacity equivalent of one physical core of an Intel
Xeon processor with hyper threading enabled– For Intel Xeon processors, each OCPU corresponds to two hardware
execution threads, known as vCPUs– Can be added in the increments of 1, 2, or 4
14
General Purpose vs. High-Memory Shapes
● The smallest General Purpose Shape provides 7.5 GB memory with a single OCPU. Larger shapes provide more OCPUs with correspondingly higher memory.– Small: 1 OCPU with 7.5 GB
– Large: 16 OCPU with 120 (16*7.5) GB
● High Memory Shapes should be selected if we need more memory for OCPU (Memory Intensive applications)– Small: 1 OCPU with 15 GB
– Large: 16 OCPU with 240 (16*15) GB
15
On-Demand Flexibility
● Some clients plan to limit their Development OCPU environment up time, such as 16 hours a day and no weekends.
● Clients also have the option to scale up by adding additional storage and OCPUs on demand.
● Clients have the flexibility to use any product on the OAC product catalog; so you could easily perform a quick POC on additional products such as the ODI cloud.
16
OAC Migration Steps and Configuration Tasks
OAC Migration Process From OBIEE 11.1.1.7+● Provision OAC Servers: configure Storage, Database, Access Rules, and
Integrations
● Generate BI Migration Utility
● Leverage the BI Migration Utility to export BI Artifacts; this captures Dashboards and Analyses, Data Model (RPD), and Application Roles
● Migrate BI Artifacts – BAR file (12c); JAR file (11g)
● For Hybrid Implementations (data warehouse on-premise) – either install Weblogic with RDC or configure VPN. Open required ports; establish connection.
Note: DBaaS can be used as a cloud data warehouse as well
18
Post Migration Configuration Tasks
● Here are some of the post-migration steps:– Migrate Weblogic Security, EM Security, BI & PS Config files,
Logs etc.– Configure the Database to use DataDirect drivers– Configure Usage Tracking– Configure LDAP, SSL, SSO, etc.– Check XMLP and BI JavaHost settings– Edit Database Connections in the RPD
● Test Dashboards and Reports; minor format cleanup may be required
19
OAC Security Optionsand Demonstration
OAC Security Options
● Major Security changes in Oracle BI 12c:– BISystemUser and BISystem Application Role removed– GUIDs removed; User ID centric security– Database Security Store– Catalog Groups not supported
● OAC uses IDCS to grant access to cloud resources● OAC comes with default self-signed certificate; can install
paid CA certificate● OAC Delivers now supports SSL option
21
OAC Administration Demo
OAC Administration Tasks and Navigation
● Create new user
● Grant application roles
● Take Snapshot (captures RPD, Web Catalog and Application Roles)
● Capture Full Backup, which is stored outside of the instance
● Apply Patch/Upgrade
