Issue 6 - Wednesday 22nd May 2019 WELCOME Welcome to Week 4 of term 2, and believe it or not we are nearly half way through the term. Welcome back the ‘Clarke’ Family to Walliston Primary School, whom I am sure will enjoy being part of the Walliston Community. An important reminder that we have our PUPIL FREE DAY on Friday 31 st May as staff will be attending professional development that will have a focus on “Future Focused Learning”. WAS MR LEVY LOST? “The grass was still… with little breeze in sight…” were the words of Captain Levy sailing across his beloved turf, the school oval. Yes there was a sailing boat on our school oval and no, Mr Levy did not have a dream about saving two of every animal. Instead he coordinated a very engaging maths lesson with his Year 2 class and students across the school had the opportunity to sail with him at lunchtime and explore his boat. Thank you Mr Levy for making maths fun in Room 1. BLUE AND GOLD COVERED THE SCHOOL It was pleasing to see a sea of blue and gold amongst our students last Friday. Footy Colours Day allowed us to wave our team colours, be accepted and supportive to those who do not wear the premiership teams colours. Thank you to all the families who supported the Year 6 leaders to raise some money for the school. The students had fun in supporting their favourite team or colours. ALPACAS WITH MARACAS This morning at 11:00am, Walliston Primary School joined thousands of schools across Australia to read “Alpacas with Maracas” as part of the National Simultaneous Storytime. It is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy. Especially when the principal and deputy principal has little musical talent and tries to play the maracas while reading about alpacas. BBQ TRADITION A big thank you to the parents and volunteers who helped our P&C to continue the traditional sausage sizzle and cake stall on election day. A number of parents rostered on from 6:30am to the middle of the afternoon cooking hotdogs, bacon & egg burgers, selling cupcakes and provided fun activities for the little ones. The Early Childhood Centre open day was a great opportunity to promote our school and many new families took interest in this area of our school. I appreciate the effort from all those who helped out on the day and your commitment in supporting our school initiatives is very much valued by our students and staff. EVENTS COMING UP We have a number of events coming up which everyone is looking forward to including: our School Choir Assembly on Thursday at 2pm, Year 5 & 6 Eagles Cup on Friday, Toontastic returns for 2019 which is next Tuesday, and the big quiz night on Friday 7 th June. Remember to start organising your tables and contact the school to purchase your tickets. Regards, Craig Mainard From the Acting Principal’s Desk Assembly is this Thursday at 2pm - tomorrow

WELCOME

Welcome to Week 4 of term 2, and believe it or not

we are nearly half way through the term. Welcome back the ‘Clarke’ Family to Walliston Primary School,

whom I am sure will enjoy being part of the Walliston Community. An important reminder that we have

our PUPIL FREE DAY on Friday 31st May as staff will be attending

professional development that will have a focus on “Future Focused Learning”.

WAS MR LEVY LOST?

“The grass was still… with little breeze in sight…” were the words of Captain

Levy sailing across his beloved turf, the school oval. Yes there was

a sailing boat on our school oval and no, Mr Levy did not have a

dream about saving two of every animal. Instead he coordinated a

very engaging maths lesson with his Year 2 class and students

across the school had the opportunity to sail with him at lunchtime

and explore his boat. Thank you Mr Levy for making maths fun in

Room 1.

BLUE AND GOLD COVERED THE SCHOOL

It was pleasing to see a sea of blue and gold amongst our students

last Friday. Footy Colours Day allowed us to wave our team colours, be accepted and supportive to those

who do not wear the premiership teams colours. Thank you to all the families who supported the Year 6

leaders to raise some money for the school. The students had fun in supporting their favourite team or

colours. ALPACAS WITH MARACAS

This morning at 11:00am, Walliston Primary School joined thousands of schools across Australia to read

“Alpacas with Maracas” as part of the National Simultaneous Storytime. It is a colourful, vibrant, fun

event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy. Especially when the principal and deputy

principal has little musical talent and tries to play the maracas while reading about alpacas.

BBQ TRADITION

A big thank you to the parents and volunteers who helped our P&C to continue the traditional sausage

sizzle and cake stall on election day. A number of parents rostered on from 6:30am to the middle of the

afternoon cooking hotdogs, bacon & egg burgers, selling cupcakes and provided fun activities for the little

CHAPLAIN CHAT

At Walliston Primary School I get the privilege of running the BUZ –

Build Up Zone program for all Pre-Primary to Year 5’s that want to attend.

BUZ is a social and emotional wellbeing program that benefits everybody,

but especially good for teaching social skills and emotional regulation.

In the BUZ Program we try not to use the term ‘Bully’ but talk more about

what is friendly and unfriendly behaviour and language.

IF SOMEONE IS PICKING ON YOU OR ACTING UNFRIENDLY…

YOU COULD USE THE BUZ GIMME 5 WAY.

WALK: Simply walk away; give quick eye contact, keep your head up,

ignore what is being said and walk away. The important thing here is not

to say anything back.

TALK: Tell them to stop Say how you feel

Say why you feel that way Say what you want

Sometimes walking away works, but sometimes it happens again or they

follow you…

BOUNCE: back a retort – be clever, funny but friendly with your words,

say sorry if you had been unfriendly to them first.

GET HELP: (If you need it) If you have tried these things and the person

still won’t leave you alone and or it is still occurring then ‘Get Help’ from

someone you trust, and can help you

Say “I’m getting help” not “I’m dobbing”…… The difference is: dobbing

is when you are telling on the person to get them into trouble, whereas

getting help, is asking for assistance to stop a person or people from

continuing their actions towards you.

BULLY SHIELDS: The best way to bully proof yourself is to show

confidence, learn body language techniques and using firm but confident language often will deter a potential

situation.

Build yourself up: It’s not what people say about you that builds you up, its what you say about yourself.

Don’t bottle up your feelings: Talk to someone you trust and let them know what is going on

Stick up for your mates: Supportive friends is a great way to stop others from being unfriendly, especially friends

that will stand with you and tell them to stop.

Thursday morning 8.45 - 9.15am

The pre-Primary children had a special celebration for their wonderful mothers on Thursday the 6th of May.

When they were asked what sort of activities their mums would like to do to relax, throwing water bombs and playing at the park were top of the list! More discussion was obviously needed as well as a few good stories about Mother’s Day! Eventually we settled on painting nails, making nature crowns, making perfume and playing with play dough. The children made some scones just beforehand. They weren’t a very popular choice with the children but they had to be reminded that we were thinking about what their mothers would enjoy and not just something that they would like! The children sang a few songs and then presented their lovely mothers with their gifts. We also had some grandmothers with us as well! Mrs Westphal Class Teacher
