Transcript of ASSC Charleston Newsletter- Fall 2010
NEWSLETTER Hi folks,
We started the new school year with a great event: an “archaeology” picnic! There
were some familiar faces, and some new ones. It was great to see everyone again after
a long (and hot!) summer. Be sure to check out some of the photos from this event on
page 2. More photos are available on our chapter’s website.
We have a very productive fall season planned out. This year’s ASSC Fall Field
Day is on October 9th at Charles Towne Landing (page 3). As some of you know, Fall
Field Day moves around the state and goes to a new location every year. This year
it’s on our turf and hopefully it will be a fantastic event. Also, don’t miss the
volunteer opportunity to dig at Hampton Plantation on November 6th (page 3). It is a
very exciting site and state park archaeologist David Jones promises that you will
find some cool artifacts! We are hoping to wash most of the artifacts on site, but if we
have leftovers we’ll organize an artifact-washing night at the Charles Towne Landing
archaeology lab. Remember: this excursion will be a “members only” event. We will
have membership forms at the site so people can join if they need to. There will be a
van leaving downtown in the morning, so if you need transportation contact me at
[email protected] to reserve your spot (right now we have room
for 12).
Best,
Cicek Beeby

ARCHAEOLOGY PICNIC AT CHARLES TOWNE LANDING
Archaeology Picnic was a lot of fun, thanks to all those who brought food, helped out
with the set up, donated books for prizes and participated in the games. We are
thinking about making it an annual event!
Picnic-lovers separated into two groups early on: those who
wanted to run around and solve Scavenger Hunt clues, and
those who remained close to the food spread!
Andrew Agha volunteered to be the grill master. Thank you Andrew!
Ron Anthony brought
a croquet set – and left
all the players in the dust!
Five teams competed in the
Scavenger Hunt and solved
puzzles like this one. The
prize? A small library of
archaeology and
anthropology books donated
by our members. Congrats
to Team Vandalay
Industries, who won with a
nearly perfect score and
graciously shared the prize
with the runners up.

ASSC FALL FIELD DAY
Don’t miss the 23rd annual ASSC Fall Field Day at Charles Towne
Landing on October 9th! This year’s theme is “The Science of
Archaeology.” The organizers put together an amazing variety of
activities including display booths featuring recent research projects in
South Carolina, a scavenger hunt, dig boxes for kids, dive gear
demonstrations and underwater writing, and much more. Primitive
technology demonstrations will showcase atlatls, blowguns, bow and
arrow, flint knapping, and prehistoric pottery manufacture. On behalf
of the ASSC Charleston Chapter, our president Andrew Agha is
organizing a lecture series in the Visitor Center classroom.
OCTOBER 9, 2010, SATURDAY, 9:00-4:00
For a preliminary program of all the activities throughout the day, please visit the
ASSC website. Admission is $7.50 for adults, $3.75 for S.C. Seniors, $3.50 for youth age
