Unique Features

Cameras

Low lux

Lux is a measure of light intensity. A camera lux rating refers to the minimum amount of light that will produce an image. The lower the number, the more sensitive the camera. Low lux cameras are recommended for lower light environments, such as pipe or nuclear inspection.

Pan

Camera Pan Ability. These cameras offer camera panning. Camera pan is analogous to turning your head left to right (but be careful, some of our cameras will pan 360° continuously). Look for a camera’s pan range.

Tilt

Camera Tilt Ability. These cameras offer camera tilt. Camera tilt is analogous to turning your head to look up to the sky and then down to the ground. Look for a camera’s tilt range.

High RESOLUTION

Resolution is a measure of picture quality and can be measured in lines of horizontal resolution. Look for the number of TV lines. A standard TV has approximately 525 TV lines. Cameras with a greater number of TV lines offer a greater resolution.

Lights

Most of our cameras and crawlers offer lighting. Argon lights, LEDs, halogen, and quartz halogen lighting are just some of the lighting available for our equipment.

Zoom

Camera Zoom Ability. In the specifi cations, we offer camera zoom in terms of optical and digital. Optical zoom uses the optics (lens) of the camera to bring the subject closer. Digital zoom enlarges the center portion of the image, thus simulating optical zoom.

Unique Features

Crawlers

General Features

Polymorphic

Being polymorphic means that the robot has shape-changing ability. In its lowered confi guration, it takes the shape of a tank. In its raised confi guration, the tracks take the shape of a triangle giving a higher viewpoint and attack angle.

Two-Way audio

Simultaneous two-way audio allows the robot operator to hear everything, even while talking. Communicate with your personnel through the miniature loudspeaker, and hear and talk to victims trapped in rubble.

Inclinometer

This option allows the robot operator to determine the pitch of the robot’s body. This helps determine whether the robot is going up hill or fl ipped over.

Water Proof

Most of our equipment is depth-rated for work in, under or around water. Look for the depth rating in the specifi cations.

Construction

Aluminum, stainless steel, titanium, brass, just to name a few. Look for material construction options in many of our pieces of equipment.

Micro VGTV

The Micro VGTV, or Variable Geometry Tracked Vehicle, is a unique system for remote inspection or observation applications. As the name implies, the vehicle’s shape can be altered during operation. The tracks, in their lowered confi guration, take the shape of a tank. When the geometry is varied to the point where the vehicle is in its raised confi guration, the tracks take the shape of a triangle. The Micro VGTV remains fully operational throughout these shape alterations and as a result, can continue to travel and maneuver while its confi guration is being changed. This unique feature allows the vehicle to negotiate obstacles and operate in confi ned spaces and over rough terrain.

The vehicle operates via a small diameter, lightweight, 100ft tether cable with a 300ft tether available as an option. The complete system is easily transported and managed by a single operator. The vehicle is controlled using a hand-held control unit incorporating a joystick for speed and direction, and separate controls for the raise/lower, camera tilt, light and focus functions. A new operator can learn to operate the vehicle effectively in a matter of minutes. The Micro VGTV can be upgraded to the VGTV Xtreme, with scaled up weight and power to serve a wide variety of applications and negotiate larger obstacles. Systems can be built to incorporate a variety of sensors or devices required for specifi c applications. The standard vehicle is available with a color or black and white camera.

The Micro VGTV is a compact, remotely powered and controlled inspection system. It was used in search and recovery work at the World Trade Center collapse in New York City.

Upgrade to The VGTV

Xtreme! The VGTV set a new standard for small mobile robots at its introduction, and it just keeps getting better. The VGTV Xtreme upgrade offers tank-like tracks, high-torque motors, and longer tether lengths give the VGTV Xtreme a reach unequaled by other remote recon tools.

The VGTV Xtreme has the capability to carry virtually any miniaturized sensor package. Previously-integrated equipment includes radiation, air quality, and thermal monitoring sensors. Additionally, factory-calibrated lasers can be installed to provide precise visual size estimation. The controller system can be confi gured according to mission profi le. Power options

include residential AC, or custom battery solutions. Systems can be confi gured for backpack deployment or semipermanent, rack-mount use. Video and audio can be externally recorded. Depth rated to 100 feet, the VGTV Xtreme can operate in mud and under water, and can be quickly decontaminated with a simple water hose. All of these features are packed into one of the industry’s smallest crawler units.

The applications for this tool are virtually endless. VGTV Xtremes have been used by structural engineers for inspecting structure failures. Maintenance teams have used it to crawl through air conditioning ducts. Utility providers have used it to climb into industrial machinery and pipelines. Urban search and rescue teams have used the system to crawl deep into rubble, looking for survivors.

Chassis Configuration

Inuktun offers the Versatrax series crawlers in various chassis confi guration to fi t your needs. A unique feature of the Versatrax system is that the chassis can be reconfi gured for operation in a variety of pipe sizes. This feature allows the operator to use the same equipment for a wide range of inspection tasks resulting in a substantial savings in both time and equipment inventory.

Need to fi t in a small pipe diameter? Then check out the in-line chassis confi guration. Have a bit larger pipe, but need the steering maneuverability? Try the parallel angled confi guration. Or do you have a large pipe or culvert? Then the parallel fl at confi guration may be right for you. We also offer many custom approaches to your pipe inspection problems.

Parallel Chassis Configuration

Operation in larger diameter pipes, from 10 – 36″ / 25 – 91cm, the system is assembled in the more conventional, side by side, or parallel confi guration and is steerable. Mounting brackets have been designed for use in pipes having normal inside diameters of: 10″, 12″, 15″, 18″, 20″, 24″, and 36″ / 25cm, 30cm, 38cm, 46cm, 51cm, 61cm, and 91cm.

In the parallel confi guration, the tracked units can be mounted at an angle, allowing them to travel along the sides of the pipe. In addition to providing optimum traction, this feature also serves to keep the tracks clear of obstacles and material lying in the bottom of the pipe.

For pipe applications less than 24″ use the Parallel Angled Confi guration

When pipe sizes are greater than 24″, the inside arch of the pipe nears a flat surface. The tracked units can be mounted flat to travel and steer within the pipe or culvert.

The parallel chassis can be used forlarger pipes greater than 24″ using

In-line Chassis Configuration

Operation in smaller diameter pipes, 6″ to 12″ / 15 to 30cm, is accomplished using fl exible connecting hardware that allows the tracks and camera to be mounted in-line. In this confi guration the tracks are confi gured with side bumpers that act as abrasion guards for the cable harness as well as stabilizers to assist in preventing the tracks from tipping over inside the pipe. Camera and lights are located at the front mounted on skids. The fl exible joints allow the unit to negotiate bends and obstacles as it travels through the pipe. UHMW skids are also provided for the front mounted camera housing to assist in keeping it centered in the pipe. The Minitracs system transporter is not steerable in this confi guration.

Special Chassis Configuration

If the specifi cs of your application require a chassis that you don’t see here, don’t be afraid to ask. Chances are, we’ve already built it, and if not, our experienced custom engineering staff is up to the challenge.

Positioning SystemsAquaMap Shiphull Positioning System

AquaMap Shiphull makes VideoRay a capable and efficient tool for the inspection of ship hulls, dams and other vertical structures. Visibility in harbors is normally poor, making a good positioning capability critical to perform quality work. The system can use any computer scanned ship plan. It shows the ROV against starboard and port side views and a bottom view of the vessel. A variable width position trace is set to reflect the visibility. Move along to ‘paint’ the hull, documenting the coverage of your search. Return to any desired spot on the hull quickly and with confidence. Use the annotation function to record observations. Create any number of views of your survey for the survey report.

AquaMap Shiphull setup is simple. Define the location of four baseline stations (two on port and two on starboard) by clicking on points on your scanned chart. On site, just lower four baseline stations over the side of the ship to a few feet below keel depth. An automatic baseline survey will verify that actual and entered positions correspond. You are now ready to start your survey.

PILOT

PILOT is an easy to use general-purpose tracking system for VideoRay. It can be set up within minutes on any ship or dock. The basic PILOT system yields ship-relative positions, similar to a RADAR display. By upgrading the standard DiveBase-R software to DiveBase Level 2, and integrating GPS and a heading sensor, PILOT can operate in a latitude/longitude framework. DiveBase Level 2 supports chart overlays and export of tracking data to other computers or applications. The DiveBase Level 2 software also supports the tracking of up to ten transponder-equipped targets. Rather than just tracking the ROV, transponders can also be mounted on divers, on the claw of a construction crane, or on specific underwater reference points.

VideoRay has redesigned its float block to integrate the Desert Star PILOT system, which affords accuracy well below one meter with directional accuracy at +/- 0.6 degrees with 40 foot transducer spacing. The float block improvements not only accommodate the system but also improve buoyancy and thrust.

GPS Integration for PILOT

The basic PILOT system shows the position of VideoRay in a RADAR style fashion relative to the boat or dock. This is great for general tracking. However, when you need to survey a site, it is time to upgrade your system. By combining the acoustic positioning data with GPS fixes of the boat and a boat mounted heading sensor, PILOT computes the position of the ROV in latitude and longitude. That position is shown against the backdrop of a chart. Any digital or scanned chart or drawing can be used. PILOT even exports ROV position data, so you can readily interface to your ship’s charting or GIS system. Data is exported in standard NMEA-0183 format, establishing compatibility with virtually any GIS and charting platform.

AquaMap Seafloor Positioning System

AquaMap Seafloor is the choice for precision underwater survey work, by your VideoRay. The system’s field record ranges from a wreck survey over 5000 meter deep, to ship hull surveys, AUV navigation and the installation of wave recorders in shallow waters. The reliable long baseline technology produces high quality positions in just about any environment. Accuracy is generally below 1m, and can reach 0.15m in a well controlled setup. A number of advanced features are available. These include multi-vehicle operations, message exchange and remote control functions, and raster chart or AutoCAD drawing overlays on the display screen. All positioning data is recorded, and can be exported to GIS, data bases or spreadsheets. Data export is also available in real-time through either RS-232 or DDE, supporting integration of AquaMap ROV with third party navigation software.

Universal Positioning System

When your job demands versatility, consider this top-of-the-line all-purpose acoustic positioning system. AquaMap Universe provides a collection of advanced capabilities that satisfy virtually any requirement:

Use the PILOT short-baseline capability for general tracking of VideoRay. PILOT is quickly deployed, and shows ROV position either relative to the ship, or against the backdrop of a chart in latitude/longitude coordinates. The system can even export ROV position data to external charting or GIS systems. When requiring ultimate precision survey data of a patch of sea floor, use the AquaMap ROV long-baseline capability. Deploy three or four baseline stations in the corners of your survey area, and you will be able to follow precise search patterns and measure positions with an accuracy down to 0.15 meters. On ship hulls, dams, oil platforms and other vertical structures, rely on AquaMap ShipHull. This specialized long baseline configuration provides both side and bottom views of the hull or structure. Position fixes have a quality down to 0.15 meters, and in fact current position quality is always displayed. Setup is fast, making this an ideal system for effective work around hulls in turbid harbor waters.

SeaSprite Scanning

SonarThe world’s smallest sonar, the SeaSprite weighs just 5 ounces in water and is ideal for small ROVs and AUVs in military and covert uses. The SeaSprite sonar allows obstacles to be located, identifi ed, and measured in low visibility environments. The SeaSprite plugs into any VideoRay Pro line or Deep Blue unit and features a fast scan rate to match VideoRay’s high maneuverability. No calibration is needed. The SeaSprite can reference navigate along a vessel hull, pier, or other object and “see” objects on the sonar display long before they can be seen by video or a diver’s eyes. The SeaSprite includes electronics and software features often included in full sized commercial systems, such as true acoustic zoom, instant scan reversal and sector scan options, inverted mode operation, and a hard boot protection for the transducer. The sonar is controlled through a laptop computer or PDA, which is connected to the VideoRay control box.

Imaging Sonar

Towed

sidescan Sonar

Imaging vs sidescan

sonarsSidescan sonars are sonars designed to look sideways and at a downward angle from both sides of a towed or ROV mounted unit. The bottom and any objects in the water above the bottom refl ect sound waves back to the towed array and from this information an image is produced. These sonars are not forward looking sonars and are only used when attempting to mapped areas of the seafl oor or lake bed.

The SeaSprite sonar is a forward looking imaging sonar that can scan 360 degrees around the ROV from a unit mounted to the top of the ROV. The sonar rotates through a series of angular positions defi ned by a scan width. Like a rotating emergency light, the “red light”, or transducer, sends out a sound frequency, and the “blue light”, or receiver, spins around to pick up sound frequencies refl ected back. If no sound is refl ected back, no obstacles are near and the display appears dark. Sound frequencies that are detected have been refl ected off near objects and appear as colored areas on the screen. It can continuously scan up to a full 360 degrees. This type of system is best used for used for navigation, obstacle avoidance and target recognition. This method provides the greatest ability to navigate through murky waters and detect objects around the ROV and is not typically used for mapping the seafl oor or lake bed.

Other SensorsThickness Gauge

Less expensive than diving excursions to measure thickness underwater, the Cygnus Instruments thickness gauge has been designed specifically to be mounted onto the VideoRay Pro line and Deep Blue. The gauge allows the operator to carry out thickness measurements in areas that have previously been unfeasible using large ROVs or divers, such as inside pipelines. The gauge uses a technique known as Multiple Echo, which allows measurements to be taken without first removing coatings. The unit is pressure tested to 500m and dedicated software displays the time, date and thickness readings on the surface. All readings can be stored. PC or laptop (486 minimum) with VGA screen and one free serial comms or USB port is required but not included. Included with the Cygnus Thickness Gauge package:

Radiation Detector

Based on the RM-60 radiation monitor, This unit is very sensitive to gamma radiation and high energy X-Rays. Nominally, radiation detector detects the presence of radioactive Gamma sources by seeing increased radiation over background. PC computer required, not provided.

YSI Sonde Water Sensor

Measure water quality parameters, including water level that is vented to the atmosphere. Achieve an unprecedented accuracy of +0.01ft from 0 to 10ft, +0.06ft from 10 to 30ft.

Rapid Pulse™ stirring-independent dissolved oxygen measurement ORP, Salinity, pH and industry-leading specifications for conductivity and temperature are measured simultaneously with dissolved oxygen. Greater Thrust Option Upgrade

When working in currents and/or with a signifi cant length of tether in the water, the more thrust you have available the better. VideoRay’s Greater Thrust Option (GTO) couples highly effi cient, larger props with a new, custom-developed drive train to develop amazing additional thrust on your VideoRay Pro submersible without consuming more power or changing topside or submersible electronics. Due to the advanced design of the thrusters standard on Pro III and Deep Blue submersibles delivered since July, 2003, GTO thrusters can be installed in minutes. Earlier Pro models can be upgraded to the Pro III style thrusters, again without modifi cation to the internal submersible electronics or topside electronics except for a single program chip on the controller.

VideoRays equipped with the GTO option have a greater than one to one thrust to weight ratio, and can exceed four knots of forward speed – by far the best performance available in an inspection-class ROV. This additional thrust, however, does NOT come at the expense of slow speed maneuvering. In fact, these larger props allow for even more precise positioning and maneuvering than previous thrusters.

Manipulator

Dropped your Rolex overboard or need to move a small pipe out of the way? Find and retrieve it with a manipulator that handily attaches to the VideoRay submersible. The manipulator can lift up to 40 kilos or 90 pounds underwater. From the control box, open and close the jaws to a two-inch distance to retrieve items in confi ned or hazardous locations. The VideoRay’s camera eye focuses in on the manipulator to provide a close view of the operation. The mechanics of the manipulator also provide a platform for several other attachments.

Extension Tethers

All VideoRay systems come standard with 250ft of neutrally buoyant tether, and now you can choose from several combinations of positively, neutrally or negatively buoyant tether lengths to suit the job at hand. The detachable tethers encourage easier transport and handling as they accommodate specifi c depths. Modular lengths of neutrally- and positively- buoyant tether can be mixed and matched by simply locking in new sections. Use the negatively buoyant tether to reach operational depths, and switch to the neutrally buoyant tether for more maneuvering. Consult with an American Standard Robotics sales person for the combination that best fi ts your needs.

Nuclear Industry

Inuktun’s remote inspection equipment is used extensively in nuclear plant outages, maintenance and emergency situations. Cameras and crawlers are used in and around reactors, steam generators and other plant infrastructure to quickly identify and evaluate problems or trouble areas.

For particularly challenging robotic or remote inspection requirements, contact American Standard Robotics for a proposal on a custom solution.

Our Customers Say:

We primarily use the Nanocrawler for our examinations, as its low profi le and compact length offer excellent maneuverability and access in the limited space under the Reactor Head insulation…In all cases, the Nanocrawler has performed very well. We have found that its compact design has been the only viable access solution…

It is with great pleasure to announce the completion of inspection in a real facility by making full use of Inuktun’s ROVs and crawler vehicles. These products have contributed very much in a remote, deep and narrow work site where no other method available. We believe that the high performance comes from your excellent design and fi ne manufacturing combining mechanical, electrical and optical components in compact modular concept.

Search and Rescue

Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) is a multi-disciplined fi eld responsible for helping in emergencies. These emergencies include natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, fl oods, and storms. Other emergencies include building collapses, hazardous material incidents, mine collapses, trench incidents, and terrorist attacks. USAR tasks include locating, extricating, and providing immediate medical treatment to trapped victims. While these rescue tasks are critical to victims’ survival, they are not easy to execute. USAR professionals are constantly looking for safer and better ways to conduct search and rescue. Recent technological advances within the USAR fi eld have equipped professionals with new sensors and tools that better assist them in locating and extricating victims. However, in any rescue situation, USAR professionals are constantly looking for improved methods and equipment to assist with USAR tasks. Robotic technology is one such improvement.

Portable and rugged, Inuktun’s crawlers offer a life-saving solution for emergency response teams. This was proven in New York City in the aftermath of Sept. 11, 2001 when American Standard Robotics own team members and Inuktun’s SAR products assisted in the search and rescue efforts while negotiating confi ned spaces and rough terrain.

Sewer Pipe Inspection

Inuktun’s high-quality cameras and crawlers provide detailed video output using variable lighting with pan, tilt and zoom controls. Cameras are mounted on Inuktun steerable crawler systems.

Inuktun systems can be used to evaluate problem area and can conduct fi nal inspections in a wide variety of pipe diameters and materials. Our Customers Say:

Inuktun is a model for other sales and service companies. The Microtracs we purchased from you are nigh-indestructible and easy to service. The amount of power that is packed into that size of ROV transport system surprises all of our clients. The overall design is excellent, incorporating versatility and dependability with an attractive and practical industrial design. We are a service company, and our equipment is put through paces daily that pushes the envelope of the design. Without a company like Inuktun, it would be diffi cult to stay in business providing the level of service that our clients demand.

Water utilitiesThe VideoRay is effective for inspecting potable water tanks – without the use of divers and from outside the tank. Using the VideoRay eliminates the risk of human contamination or unsafe conditions. The submersible swims through the tank and surveys the roof, seams, standpipes, and cables. The camera eye captures footage while robotic grippers take samples of corrosion. The VideoRay makes tank inspections safer, more affordable, and more frequent while stretching budget dollars.

In the dark of the tank, Rich Faulk pilots the tiny, yellow robot through the water. With its two headlights beaming, the 8-pound sub heads down a 3ft wide section of standpipe. Colonies of corrosion that look like a coral reef wave out from the interior steel like a scene in Titanic. The tank Faulk is inspecting could have been the place you got your last glass of drinking water.

Who has been swimming in your drinking water? Ask Rich Faulk, president of Above and Below H20, in Sacramento. Faulk used to dive in the tanks himself to look for corrosion and disrepair, but now he uses an 8-pound swimming robot instead. From outside the tank, Faulk inspects the water tanks without risk of human contamination or unsafe conditions.

Dotting the US landscape are 400,000 steel and concrete water storage tanks. Every year, 80,000 tank inspections come due, using the recommendations of the AWWA (American Water Works Association) for an inspection every fi ve years. In many towns, inspections are dreaded and put off for lack of funding for human divers.

Sending divers into drinking water tanks has long been the practice for inspecting the structures. But it is dangerous and can pose health risks. Now, more town and city engineers are looking into the use of the VideoRay ROVs (remotely operated vehicles) to coexist with divers and make tank inspections safer, more affordable, and more frequent.
